i think one of the hardest things for spn fans to understand is good with kids ≠ good parent. dean is good with children for the exact reason he’s an awful parent: inside he still feels like a little boy. i think this is significant bc the line is “dean raised sam ergo he understands kids” but flashbacks of sam and dean as children show them to be consistently miserable depressed or imperiled. dean was not a parent to sam and certainly not a good one their childhood was horrific very specifically bc of a lack of adequate parenting. sam is surprised to discover dean is good with kids, and this connection he’s able to establish with them is unambiguously linked to his own experience as a traumatized child. but like. idk emotionally volatile people who haven’t fully processed the events of their childhood are not notorious for their parenting skills and in fact when dean is asked to parent a child (ben, jack) these are clear weaknesses for him. but honestly i’d say like 50-80% of dads are like this it's really not that complicated.
