Yes! It’s among other things a show about stories, which I think partly comes from the way they deliberately weave the Treasure Island narrative in and out of what is otherwise a very detailed and reasonably accurate historical setting. History is made out of stories, after all. In the show we see all these very deliberate steps characters take to obscure or edit their own narratives, and how little of their authentic selves are truly known to the others. It’s not just Flint! Mr. Scott has an entire secret life nobody guesses at; Silver does a ton to consciously manipulate narrative including adopting the “Long John” persona, and refuses to reveal a past because he rejects the determination of identity that would result. Rackham is obsessed with his reputation and with the power of narrative signifiers including his flag. Woodes Rogers puts forward a version of himself in his book that’s heroic, and he trades on that reputation with his creditors to fund the expedition to Nassau, but we also hear that account of himself challenged and proven false. So yeah that’s one of the things about Black Sails I love best, how the characters are all constantly trying to control their own narratives and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t; and sometimes, as with Flint and Silver, the narrative takes on a life of its own.
