like did you know that trees lower the surface temperature by up to 19° and grass by up to 24°... access to green space is access to safety in a climate crisis and it is a massive site of inequality because poorer areas tend to have less green space and thus get hotter. urban trees are an equality issue as well as a climate issue. sorry it's not a magic bullet that solves everything but sometimes you need to pick an issue that helps a bit and focus on that. this might not be yours. it's likely going to be mine in the future when my health issues allow me to take it on. if we each pick a thing we can make a difference
Basically, if you say "this historical thing is a human universal", ask yourself, did it also happen in the Americas? Because the Americas developed thousands of years of civilization completely independent from Eurasia. Many of those broad claims about earliest "human" history and civilization are based on the Middle East and the Mediterranean. Not even China or India are considered most of the time, let alone Africa or the Americas or Oceania, which had multiple different independent origins of agriculture and social organization.
As a practical example, any theory of the origin of writing cannot only study the Sumerians. You need at least to consider the origin of writing in China and India. Even if you operate with the assumption (highly debatable) that writing from the Middle East influenced them, you cannot just assign the same factors to it.
And you ESPECIALLY have to take into account the invention of writing (Maya scripts) and proto-writing in the Americas. These were created completely differently from other writing systems, sometimes radically differently (Andean quipus). You cannot ignore them.
This is the same with everything: the origin of agriculture, cities, social organization, warfare, anything you consider a "human universal". You cannot only work with Eurasia. You cannot ignore Africa and you cannot ignore Oceania. But America, in particular, is the key to understanding history in a complete picture.
id suggest adding australia specifically as another essential component of any complete anthropological history, since its cultures were more or less self-contained for many, many thousands of years before colonization and developed all sorts of systems and lifestyles that conflict with a euro- or eurasia-centric view of history
i got inspired by antique furniture -> decided to try and make a wooden doll.
she is whittled entirely out of balsa wood with a craft knife, and colored with wood dye. the cabinet has miniature hinges made of tube beads and a metal rod, and closes with a magnet. she absolutely should hold a sentimental & important object, but i don't have any that are the correct size, so i just put in some cute trinkets.
An incomplete list of
Potions of Hydration!
Earlier this week I mentioned putting pickle juice in my water to replenish electrolytes. I work outside in a very hot and humid area, so it was very necessary.
Since then, a LOT of people have chimed in with their favorite hot weather drinks. I want to try... all of them. I've only had a few. Many of them are similar, but I still think its cool how many variations there are for 'its fucking hot out here and I don't want to die.'
So here is the incomplete list.
ORS (oral rehydration solution) (link has several recipes)
Shrub (sharaab)
Agua de pepino
Switchel
Posca
Ayran
Straight up drinking pickle juice (small doses)
Agua fresca
Sekanjabin
Pickle lemonade
Lebanese lemonade
Salted watermelon
Jamaica/hibiscus tea
Lebu pani
Ayuvedic gatorade
Soda chanh muôi
Suero
Aam paan
Sharbat
-
These ones were given to me without names, and were just lists of ingredients, to taste:
- water and umezu
- diluted apple juice with lemon and salt
-watermelon, lime juice, mint
- sparkling water, mint leaves, lemon or lime juice, cucumber
-coconut water, lime juice, salt
-salt, lemon juice, water
-orange juice, salt, sugar, water, lime or lemon juice
-elderflower syrup and lime juice in water.
There are probably more! Hydrate or die straight!

Never have I ever seen such intense joy replaced with such sorrow in the span of a single minute the way I saw it happen with Croatia NT tonight.
Croatia played with such skill and intensity, and even though they are going home, they put up a fierce fight.
sources say there are muscles in the back of my neck. and they want to kill me
not only are most people completely unaware of the devastation of indigenous languages in the americas, most people are completely unaware of the devastation of indigenous languages in europe. never mind occitan, they don't know about basque! it's wild! bleak! existentially horrifying!!!
the last few centuries of french history involved, amongst other things, a concerted effort to establish "french" as a legitimate country and cultural identity, and crucially as a language, which sounds like an absurd statement if you know nothing about the languages of france. french is a language, yes; it exists and existed in the late eighteenth century. but it was limited primarily to the north of france and was certainly not spoken or even understood across the country. other languages within france were banned and french was enforced following the french revolution and even to this day other languages indigenous to france have very little legal protection and are not recognised as official languages.
that's just one country in europe. one. and many people straight up have no idea about any of this!
did you know france has celtic languages? breton is the only celtic language spoken outside of the british isles. did you know france has germanic languages? alsatian, for example, is spoken in the east of france, unsurprisingly in alsace. it's not even the only french germanic language. did you know france has a number of languages and dialects known as langues d'oïl closely related to french? norman and picard, for example, are spoken in the north of france. did you know that france has gallo-romance languages? franco-provençal (which has a number of dialects) is spoken in the east of france, as well as parts of switzerland and italy. did you know that france has a language most closely related to catalan, the langues d'oc? occitan is spoken in the south of france and has a rich literary history. did you know france is home to basque, or rather euskara, a language isolate which predates indo-european languages? romani dialects! corsican! so much more than just french! there are even extinct jewish dialects of occitan! extinct langues d'oïl like angevin! so much linguistic diversity and all anyone talks about is french.
[image id: a picture taken using flash photography in a dark room. The photo is of a white ceiling with a small square cut out, just large enough for an orange cat’s head to poke through. The cat’s pupils are huge and round. White text on top reads "Carry on, citizen" and the bottom text reads "Empress Wu does not have a secret police. Your suspicion is noted." /end id]
A celebrated and time-honoured tradition. Though I was told a cat would kill you…
I firmly believe had they added 5 or 7 minutes to the second half of the extra time instead of just three, cabo verde would have tied the match u.u
