Bosses and Coworkers: you've got a great work ethic, going above and beyond
Me: I am literally just doing my job. Everyone else is slacking off.
Everyone Else: (magically knows somehow the secret amounts of work the boss is actually asking of them, which the boss cannot tell anyone for Reasons)
There always seems to be a gap in instructions (from bosses, parents, teachers, friends, whoever) between 'required' and 'expected', and this gap is:
invisible
never explained
always a different size
you have to guess the size
if you guess wrong you either get Praised or In Trouble
At least on 'the price is right' you know (because someone *actually told you*) that you are playing a guessing game and that there is an over/under mechanic and that the conquence of guessing wrong isn't a punishment or damaged relationship or getting fired
On an unrelated note my psychiatrist has given me a referal for a formal ASD evaluation
This post is about the neurodivergent frustration of having to deal with neurotypical authority figures who don't say what they mean but I love the pro-union labor-rights energy I'm seeing in the notes
Getting early prep done for the 2030 world cup format by moving continents during this one 🙃
As of last night, we are now at 11 red cards (just 1 card off having 3 times as many as last world cup).
That means we have also officially passed the red card amount given in 2014 (10) too! Our next closest records to beat are 1994 (15), 1990 (16), and 2002/2010 (17). Let's get to work!
There is a quality of books (or movies or shows) that I can best describe as “stickiness,” which is separate from being good or even enjoyable: a sticky book is one I just keep thinking about. Sometimes it’s because a book is very good (e.g. The Locked Tomb), and sometimes it’s because a book is very bad (e.g. ACOTAR), but there are also very good and very bad books that are slippery, such that when I’m done reading them they slip from my thoughts like water from a hydrophobic surface.

went to orcas island today for the first time. very cool. met several cool old lesbians. saw the beach from many angles
Why is eating breakfast so annoying
We saw a firefly on our way home from national night out tonight.
I've lived in this neighborhood for 20 years, and never seen one here, before.
In less than a decade, I've watched the proliferation of native planting, habitat planting, signs saying an area is for pollinators and no pesticides allowed, fewer and fewer monoculture grass lawns. Better raking and soil health practices. Businesses and schools are installing rain gardens and native plants all over my neighborhood, and it's slowly spilling out into more and more types of neighborhoods.
if you haven't been paying attention to gardens for the past decade you'd never notice it.
But it started slow and now it's speeding up rapidly.
Expectations here are shifting.
And tonight, we got a firefly.
I wrote this less than one year ago.
Tonight I took a walk at dusk to a park I've been to a thousand times before, where my daughter and I planted replacement trees this arbor day, and there were fireflies everywhere you looked!
It seemed like a lot of them, till I passed a garden on my way out, that was full of native plants. It was absolutely sparkling with fireflies. It was one of those native plant gardens that've gone in in recent years, hitting it's stride and full maturity. Just glittering with this fantastic creature that's in danger of being in decline.
Just a few native gardens, a bit less raking, and not mowing the lawn in May. That's all it takes for a whole little population to thrive.
And there are so many more of these gardens going in now. More every year. Frankly the anti-ICE activity really sped it up over here. And we give each other seeds and seedlings and cuttings to make it go faster. In five years the whole neighborhood will be aglow.
I can't wait till my garden is mature enough for me to sit on my porch and watch them. If I can ever go a year without significant building debris on my yard.
We'll get there. I know we will.
I'm gonna go back in the morning to get a better look at what that neighbor was planting.
it sucks that the overwhelming majority of medical messaging around salt/sodium is "evil poisonous substance that you're definitely already eating way too much of," because like. you do still need it. (trust me, as a POTS-haver, I've had to completely rewire my own brain about salt.) and you need more salt when the entire northern hemisphere is hot enough to fry an egg on. ever tried sucking down the recommended 64oz of hydration per day entirely as water, only to find you're peeing constantly without any of the purported benefits of being "hydrated"? assuming you don't have another medical condition that causes frequent urination, your body probably needed more salt/electrolytes to be able to hold onto that water and make use of it. if there was ever a time to keep a sports drink/pedialyte/etc within constant reach, it's when the heat index is 110°F/43°C.
my 100% failproof way to handle reactionaries asking why i don’t shave at all is going “because i don’t want to” it works because what they really want is an argument about the merits of feminism, and they’ll draw it out and try to convince you it’s a cult or whatever, but you can avoid it all by sticking to “i just don’t wanna. don’t feel like it” and if they argue with you about it you can use your ultimate ability, which is “i’m sorry i thought it was a free country?” which, believe me, they cannot come back from. they’ll either drop it or start harping on something you didn’t say, and it’s important you don’t take the bait at that point. when they can’t argue with what you say, they assume your beliefs and attack those. and you crucially must be visibly baffled at their change of direction because it will make them seem and possibly feel crazy (which they are). “i don’t want to shave” is a perfect response because truly it all comes down to autonomy and the ability to do what you want. they’ll try to say “feminism makes you think you have to do that” and it’s important to not take that bait. to reiterate that you don’t know what they mean and you just don’t like shaving and that it’s really weird to look into it that deep. this works i promise

learning that people want you in their lives is a skill you can develop if it does not come naturally
making stuff is one of the best parts of being alive
its crazy that megan thee stallion is not considered a queer artist by some people. the woman is not shy about the fact that she finds women attractive and likes having sex with them. she references it pretty frequently in her music, she made a whole song about enjoying having threesomes with a woman and a man, she made a Jennifer's Body-themed music video, she had Victoria Monét full riding her thigh on stage at a coachella, and there's literally a video of a lesbian interviewing glorilla at a party & asking who she would date if she was queer and her immediate response is "megan. megan like girls!" and then megan turns around and immediately starts flirting with the interviewer. i don't know what more you want. that woman is Bi Sexual and we should all be thankful every day for that. bi women are still bi when they wanna fuck men too you know. the fucking of men is also done bisexually.
I do think the ability to emoji-react is a net win for human communication. not only does it give you an outlet for 'I see and acknowledge this but don't have a verbal response' but it also adds a pleasing alethiometer element to things
my coworker announces that he's off to the dentist. someone reacts with a tooth emoji. is this a statement of dentist solidarity? a wish for my coworker to return with more (or fewer?) teeth than he set out with? simple word association? who can say
I think people often misunderstand my position on the Habsburg incest thing as "no, don't make fun of the royals I like!"
When really it is "I find it unnerving how fast people make fun of physical disability and equate it to moral goodness when you make it slightly ok to do so in context."
You wouldn't believe how many history books sound like they want to say slurs when they talk about Ferdinand I having hydrocephalus and epilepsy. Conditions, I must stress, can be caused by other things. Conditions other people have.

Nudibranchs at low tide
Edmonds, WA, USA April 18, 2026
When my cousin's then-boyfriend texted her that he would be coming home late because he would be stopping by the department store on his way home from work, she, knowing full well that he hates going there, never buys clothes there if he can help it, and generally asks to stay home whenever she goes, knew instantly that he could only be going for one reason: To buy an engagement ring.
Practical-minded, she responded: Don't forget the coupon we got in the mail, there's a discount on rings. Ever helpful, she sent him a photo of the coupon code.
He left her on read. When he came home, he was cagey and grumbling, and when she was like "Did you remember to use the coupon" he was like, "I don't know what you're talking about, why would I be buying jewelry, etc.," not meeting her eye.
Few weeks later he took her out to dinner at a fancy restaurant, spent the entire night grumbling under his breath and shaking his head in disbelief, before going "아이씨" and pulling the ring box out of his pocket and slamming it down on the table. "How the hell did you know," he said, begrudgingly impressed.
She was like, "It's really not hard" and then was like "Did you use the coupon" and he was like "Yes I used the coupon"
And to me, this is romance
