In my mind he’s just never been taught to express love the way Peter does. Sarah stopped with all the ‘gushy’ stuff around the time they moved to Oldtown, leaving her sons to make up their own love language around her sarcasm and backhanded compliments and lopsided smiles. It’s a lot, for Juno to figure out how to cuddle when he’s still wrapping his brain around the concept of physical contact that’s not inherently sexual or threatening.

But he gets better. He and Peter talk about it, and they go slow. Peter learns how to read Juno’s affection in the little things, and Juno learns how to allow himself to actually touch the person he loves (he starts with small gestures, like placing a hand on Peter’s shoulder or curling his fingers around his wrist. The tiniest things have his heart tripping over itself).

One night Juno and Peter are lying together on their bed, the bedside table light on as Peter pours over his research. He thinks Juno’s asleep; he starts when the blankets rustle beside him. Juno turns to face Peter’s side of the bed, though he keeps his face hidden around his mound of blankets. Peter sets his pad down. For a long time Juno just lays there, blankets taught where he bunches them around his torso. When he moves, it’s so slowly Peter almost has to wonder whether he’s fully awake. His fingers alight on Peter’s temple, soft enough that he can barely feel the tickle of the pads against his skin, and then Juno brushes his lips against Peter’s. His breath ghosts over his skin. It’s the softest kiss they’ve ever shared—just a whisper of contact. Peter’s heart breaks with the gentleness of it. Then Juno withdraws as though sucked through a hole in the ship. In a flash he retreats to his mound of blankets, shuffling them up over his shoulders to obscure his face.

“G’night,” he snaps.
