Depressed as hell realising that we were never even offered a glimpse of anything as powerful as 2x01 Jacob’s “if you were the last vampire on earth, you would be enough. You and me, me and you, you and me…” and that incredible close up camerawork and circle lighting, and Lestat with his throat open haunting it all, with Daniel Hart’s heartwrenching score in the back.
for a second i got excited at the prospect of possibly getting s4 early if they might have filmed stuff for season 4 during the season 3 shoot. but then I realized that would mean season 4 is already mostly written and if its written by the same people who wrote s3...... someone pick me up im scared
i got my hands on the apple tv leak and i have some subsequent thoughts about the ep and the season under the banner. its kinda rambly, so forgive me.
I'm gonna keep it pretty vague, but yeah idk. it was certainly an episode of television. I truly believe the actors carried so many of the questionable writing decisions, though. Assad and Delainey need all the flowers and awards off the bat.
I feel like this whole season was a lot of.... meh. It felt largely aimless and rode on the back of a few fandom-specific jokes, and that was kinda it. I feel like so much character and plot were underdeveloped or just not touched or entirely diverted from (unless it was gabistat and then it felt way overdone).
Like, even putting the events of the season up to a rudimentary plot outline structure like below, it falls flat.
I feel like somehow so much and so little was introduced and nothing was wrapped up in a satisfying way or at all, really.
I didn't like the beheading theories when they were making their rounds; I didn't like the beheading plot, period. It made no sense and, shocker, it was unfulfilling for the most part (since we only saw what happened to Louis). I feel like the beheading was unnecessary and the conversation that occurred during the Louis, Armand, and Claudia scene could have been done without it. I don’t think it served the plot or characters.
Getting into some character stuff.
Armand is on my mind mostly right now. I am appreciative to see him in this ep for so long, which I suppose is saying something. Assad did incredibly. I thought the scheme with Armand and Regenia was... interesting? It really played into his mastermind version of him that we know from season 2. I'm still pondering that since there were some parts that made me go, huh?? I thought Louis bringing up Armand's backstory out of left field was a choice. I did not see it coming, and I really hope they don't let it flail and use it to set up a reunion with Marius next season or something. I think Armand was a little too passive in this season for what the season finale came to.
Onto Daniel, naturally, after thinking about Armand. Damn. What a nothing burger. So much potential to be a more interesting character and the writers really, really, dropped the (bowling) ball. He was just kind of there the whole season. Cringe dialogue, after cringe dialogue. Shame ://
Don't even get me started on devil's minion this season. All bark no bite from the writers. So much telling and not showing. It made their dynamic, which is one of the most beloved by the fandom, was made stale and uninteresting. Daniel switching teams to bat for Armand had zero impact at the end because they rushed through building any kind of actual relationship and showing why Daniel would do that. I went into this with low expectations for devil's minion, knowing that since it was Lestat's season, they weren't the priority, and I was STILL let down. I hope they pull through with the Night Island spin off. With such a devoted fanbase to these two, there is more than enough interest. But after this season, idk how much I trust amc with them.
Speaking of Lestat, I quite enjoyed him this season. Sam is such a talented actor and really portrayed Lestat’s highs and lows exquisitely. Clearly, since the season was based on Lestat’s story, I think it was mostly executed well. I loved his character interactions with Nicki (both pre and post vamp), his explicit scenes with gabi felt excessive, but I think that’s a writer/pacing issue. Too few scenes with Armand in my opinion. For how interweaved they are in the books, that did not translate to me in the show. I would have liked to see Lestat confront Armand more directly about the trial and Claudia's death. Maybe that’s a next season thing. I LOVEDDD the akasha/keeperstat scenes. I think, of the whole show, those were my favorite and best produced and written scenes. Lestat’s season in ep 5 were interesting. I'm still pondering them. Interesting idea, idk how I feel about the execution (pun intended). I think the writer's room and execs favor him and it's blatantly obvious.
Onto Louis. Louis, Louis, Louis. I did like the Regina plot line with him. I think it put Louis in a light we hadn’t seen before and really highlighted the grief he was still holding onto. Considering that in the books, Louis is largely absent, I was more than happy to see him on my screen again and that they didn’t actively write him out. Jacob and Sam’s chemistry is truly otherworldly, and it was such a joy to see them together again. The butcher shop scene was sure something and I don’t know really how I feel about it. Louis you deserved so much better this season oh my god.
Speaking of deserved better, Gabriella. Fuck where do I even begin to express my disappointment. They butchered her. Shocking you didn’t see her character hanging in the hooks at Armand's butcher shop with how they did her. They took away all nuance that made her a interesting character in the books and bimbo-ified her and just made her weird and pervy. In the books, while she still maintains and unhealthy and incestuous relationship with Lestat, there is also a more nuanced look at her identity as girl who was married young (as a child if I remember, like 16/17) and was made to become and wife and mother against her will. And how her strong her disdain for being a mother was and how that shaped her relationships (esp with Lestat). Any conversation revolving around fluidity of sexuality and gender that is present in the books, was completely erased in the show. I would have loved to have seen this explored in the show but no, AMC was a coward.
Channeling my frustration, bringing forth the spirit of Claudia. It was so refreshing to see her get a good shout at Louis and Lestat. Esp to Louis for reading the pages of her assault to her assaulter. I’m glad that was addressed. I pretty much cried the whole seance scene, Claudia deserves peace so much and it so sad knowing it eludes her even in death. Someone give her Madeline. I don’t think my heart can go on knowing they aren’t together. Switching tracks to Regina. An interesting character, having to deal with Louis’s restless grief. The hollow twist at the end, just ending up a pawn of Armand’s was interesting, but I don’t think it was the best set up. She deserved better, too. At least she’s not dead, I guess.
Nicki was wonderful. Joseph was an underrated star this season so flowers to him for that. Though, I think toward the end he got a bit lost in the plot and pushed back. I loved seeing Nicki’s crash out and decent to madness. I don’t have too many notes on him.
Magnus and Marius. Not many notes here. I think they were both done well. Ep 3 took some time for me to digest and understand but once I understood the why behind the way it was presented, it made it so much more devastating. Marius, I was surprised by. I know a lot of people either hate or love Christorpher’s portrayal and I was on the side of the enjoyers. I kind a liked his eccentric nature, I thought it was a unique take that actually went really well. I was expecting something much more rigid, but I think playing him almost playfully in the beginning, compared to the shouting, stern, Marius we see at the end of the ep with him really showed how menacing and scary he could be. I hope we see this Marius again in the future.
Akasha was a 10/10 for me. A true highlight to this bleak season. The presence Sheila brought to her was SO powerful. I’m only upset we didn’t see more of her this season. As terrifying and beautiful as I hoped for and beyond delivered with her. If we get a season 4, I will be sat for her and her only. I support women’s rights and wrongs.
The band. I don’t have many thoughts. TC was the only one I liked. I really couldn’t care about the rest and I don’t think the writers cared either LMAO. I forgot about them by the end. Killing Larry was never resolved or explored, Alex just stopped talking, and Salamander might as well have become set dressing. The Alex AA meeting with Armand was never explored further. What happened between them? Alex seemed to revere him and next thing you know he’s incapable of emoting. Does he know Armand killed him? Does he care? The writers don’t care to let you know. The rest of the band doesn’t seem to care either.
Fareed? Love Gopal Divan. Glad we are getting more Fareed. Don’t know why he is working with Armand now. Seemed like fear in the moment but clearly the writers didn’t care to expand on it.
Ugh, I’m writing too much. I’ll wrap this up a bit.
This season was so, so flawed. I wanted to enjoy it so much. There’s only a handful of scenes I thought were done well. You can tell they were pressed for episode time and were being strangled by execs on what they could or couldn’t portray. I think too, that the loss of black writers in the writer's room was detrimental the way some of these characters were treated. It’s disgusting. I don’t blame the actors at all, they were all brilliant and so, so, talented for having to deliver with the downright questionable scripts they were being given at times. I feel like much was left unfulfilled, and not in a cliffhanger way, but a ‘this felt like a filler’ season. Thinking about it now, whatever happened to Baby Jenks? Is she dead? Where is she now??
This season left much to be desired. I’ll hold onto what I did enjoy until we get season 4 I guess.
It’s almost midnight and I need to sleep. I’ll post any revised thoughts tomorrow.

i think this season is giving me whiplash. you're given a beautifully written and produced scene and the next scene will have you wondering if the writers even had a brain cell between them in the writers' room...
there have been so many questionable writing decisions (to me) right next to some of the best stuff i've seen in television in a while, and i really don't know what to think anymore.

can someone explain to me this theory that armand and/or daniel is gonna behead lestat or that lestat would be beheaded at all? it sounds so ridiculous, and i feel like i'm missing something that would even point towards that...

i just had a thought. what if armand is the one to reveal gabriella's identity to the group? he knows who she is and if gabi is hanging around when armand eventually reconnects and being the gremlin he is..... hm.
