Chapter 3 continues with the father explaining how his teachings provide peace and longer days. These words by itself don't accomplish this; it's listening to the wisdom and applying that allows you to draw closer to God, which in turn, God will provide that peace and longer days towards your life.
My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments, for length of days and years of life and peace they will add to you... So you will find favor and good success in the sight of God and man. (1-2,4)
These are my grandmother's (Gammy's) favorite verses in the Bible and one I'm still trying to work through. As someone who deals with the need to be in control (of my life) and aware of my surroundings, I'm consistently stuck with several fears: fear of failing, losing control, not being good enough, the list goes on. Moments where I'm falling apart because I don't know what direction life is taking me, through the tears, I find a sense of comfort because I know the Lord hears me and will make everything makes sense, I just have to trust Him. I can't lie, blind trust is scary. You don't see the plan, you can't watch it unfold, you feel like you're in a hamster wheel, running, with no end in sight. And then suddenly, the wheel stops spinning, and you're right where you're supposed to be. You weren't running for no reason, you just couldn't see from inside the wheel.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. (5-6)
You know when back in school, at the end of the week, your teacher tells you it's test time, and everyone's sighs in sync? Then later when your teacher returns your graded test, there are more corrections on it than you'd like. Well, that's the same thing God does to us. He does this with love and never malice.
My son, do not despise the Lord's discipline or be weary of his reproof, for the Lord reproves him whom he loves, as a father the son in whom he delights. (11-12)
This next verse is something I'm currently struggling with. Sometimes, people will ask me for help, and I'm so tired/lazy/selfish that I tell them I'll help them at a later date. God isn't pleased and I need to do better. Rest is important and I'm not saying you should pour into someone else's cup when you have nothing to give. I'm saying, when you have a full cup, don't make it seem like you don't. Imagine if Jesus did that to us!
Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to do it. Do not say to your neighbor "Go, and come back again, tomorrow I will give it" - when you have it with you. (27,28)
