Everything Is AWFUL and Iām Not Okay: Questions to Ask Before Giving Up on Yourself
Are you hydrated?Ā
If not, have a glass of water. Dehydration can mimic or increase feelings associated with anxiety and a well hydrated brain functions optimally. Avoid excess caffeine.Ā
Have you eaten in the past three hours?Ā
Donāt be a victim of hanger! Get some foodāsomething with protein, not just simple carbs or high-fat. Nuts, hummus, and veggies are great options to feed your studying brain. Keep healthy snacks within reach to avoid mindlessly chowing down on sweets.Ā
Have you stretched your legs in the past day?Ā
If not, do so right now. If you donāt have the energy or time for a run or a trip to the gym, just walk around the block or building. Even minimal exercise preps the mind for learning so that you can focus better and recall things easier, plus itās good to get a change of scenery.Ā
Have you said something nice to someone in the past day?Ā
Do so, whether online or in person. Make it genuine! We bet your study partner would appreciate a compliment.Ā
Have you moved your body to music in the past day?
If not, jog for the length of a song at your favorite tempo, or just dance around your bedroom for the length of an upbeat song (singing along is a bonus)Ā
Have you cuddled a living being in the past two days?
If not, do so. Donāt be afraid to ask for hugs from friends of friendsā pets. Most of them will enjoy the cuddles too; youāre not imposing.Ā
Have you started or changed any medications in the past couple of weeks, including skipped doses or a change in generic prescription brand?Ā
That may be screwing with your head. Give things a few days, then talk to your doctor if it doesnāt settle down.Ā
If daytime: are you dressed?Ā
If no, put on clean clothes that arenāt PJs. Give yourself permission to wear something special, whether itās a funny t-shirt or a pretty dress.Ā
If nighttime: are you sleepy and fatigued but resisting going to sleep?Ā
Put on PJs, make yourself cozy in bed with a teddy bear and the sound of falling rain, and close your eyes for fifteen minutes while focusing on breathing deeper with every breath- no electronic screens allowed! Adequate sleep is a necessity for stress management.Ā
Do you feel ineffective?Ā
Pause right now and get something small completed, whether itās responding to an email, loading the dishwasher, or tidying up your room. Good job!
Do you feel unattractive?Ā
Take a darn selfie. Your friends will remind you how great you look. You are always insta-worthy.Ā
Do you feel paralyzed by indecision?
Give yourself ten minutes to sit back and figure out a game plan for the day. If a particular decision or problem is still being a roadblock, simply set it aside for now, and pick something else that seems doable. Right now, the important part is to break through that stasis, even if it means doing something trivial.Ā
Have you over-exerted yourself latelyāphysically, emotionally, socially, or intellectually?Ā
That can take a toll that lingers for days. Give yourself a break in that area, whether itās physical rest, taking some time alone, or relaxing with some silly entertainment for a little. Time spent refreshing yourself is never time āwasted!āĀ
Have you waited a week?Ā
Sometimes or perception of life is skewed, and we canāt even tell that weāre not thinking clearly, and thereās no obvious external cause. It happens. Keep yourself going for a full week, whatever it takes, and see if you still feel the same way then.Ā
Youāve made it this far; and you will make it through. You are stronger than you think.
Because someone might need this today
You have survived 100% of your worst days.
This too shall pass.

āMy body, my choiceā only makes sense when someone elseās life isnāt at stake.
Fun fact: If my younger sister was in a car accident and desperately needed a blood transfusion to live, and I was the only person on Earth who could donate blood to save her, and even though donating blood is a relatively easy, safe, and quick procedure no one can force me to give blood.Ā Yes, even to save the life of a fully grown person, it would be ILLEGAL to FORCE me to donate blood if I didnāt want to.
See, we have this concept called ābodily autonomy.ā Itās thisā¦.cultural notion that a personās control over their own body is above all important and must not be infringed upon.Ā
Like, we canāt even take LIFE SAVING organs from CORPSES unless the person whose corpse it is gave consent before their death. Even corpses get bodily autonomy.Ā
To tell people that they MUST sacrifice their bodily autonomy for 9 months against their will in an incredibly expensive, invasive, difficult process to save what YOU view as another human life (a debatable claim in the early stages of pregnancy when the VAST majority of abortions are performed) is desperately unethical. You canāt even ask people to sacrifice bodily autonomy to give up organs they arenāt using anymore after they have died.Ā
Youāre asking people who can become pregnant to accept less bodily autonomy than we grant to dead bodies.Ā
reblogging for commentaryĀ
But, assuming the mother wasnāt raped, the choice to HAVE a baby and risk sacrificing their ābodily autonomyā is a choice that the mother made. YOu donāt have to have sex with someone. Cases of rape aside, it isnāt ethical to say abortion is justified. The unborn baby has rights, too.Ā
First point: Bodily autonomy can be preserved, even if another life is dependent on it. See again the example about the blood donation.Ā
And hereās another point: When you say that ārape is the exceptionā you betray something FUNDAMENTALLY BROKEN about your own argument.
Because a fetus produced from sexual assault is biologically NO DIFFERENT than a fetus produced from consensual sex. No difference at all.
If one is alive, so is the other. If one is a person, so is the other. If one has a soul, then so does the other. If one is a little blessing that happened for a reason and must be protected, then so is the other.Ā
When you say that āRape is the exceptionā what you betray is this: It isnāt about a life. This isnāt about the little soul sitting inside some personās womb, because if it was you wouldnāt care about HOW it got there, only that it is a little life that needs protecting.
When you say ārape is the exceptionā what you say is this: You are treating pregnancy as a punishment. You are PUNISHING people who have had CONSENSUAL SEX but donāt want to go through a pregnancy. People who DARED to have consensual sex without the goal of procreation in mind, and this is their āconsequence.āĀ
And that is gross.Ā
^ THIS. This is this this THIS THIS THIS. THIS!!!!!
This is probablyĀ the strongest and well worded/supported argument for abortion that I have ever read.
WHY THE FUCK HAS TUMBLR FLAGGED THIS?! iāM FUCKING FURIOUS!!!
Yep, this was flagged for me too. Which is why Iām going to reblog it several time until Tumblr implodes.
This!!!!
*this but with one exception: women, not āpeople who can get pregnantā. This is misogyny against WOMEN. Name the problem.
My word choice was deliberate and accurate.
Anti-abortion action is, yes, driven by misogyny, absolutely. BUT it affects all people who are pregnant and can become pregnant, regardless of whether or not they are women (whether they be trans men, NB folk, or even girls, who are NOT adult women.) Both those facts are true, and my word choice was intentional to reflect that.
I feel bad that this is my first reblog⦠Butā¦)
But I do not agree at all. I am completely against abortion.
Yes. There are some circumstances in which I feel abortion IS necessary, like for example, if the parent is at high risk of complications and if the child was made without consent.
At those moments, Itās understandable if the parent doesnāt want to have the child.
Either your life and/or the babyās life is in danger, or it was an unfortunate assault.
But if you donāt want the child⦠Why kill them?! Everyone deserves a chance to live.
And actually, if the baby has a risk for a REALLY bad disease or condition⦠Thatās actually a really good reason for abortionā¦
And I donāt mean simple conditions like autism. I mean, REALLY BAD.
So, to sum up my opinion. Life deserves a chance to happen, but if it will be a life a suffering, a mercy kill is acceptable.
And thatās a fine opinion to have regarding YOUR body and YOUR choices. It is not ok for you, or anyone else, to try to legislate that and enforce it through rule of law.
Because this isnāt about pregnant people not wanting those children to be alive, like they have some personal vendetta against the fetus. This is about whether or not people consent to carrying a pregnant to term.
And I for one, dont feel comfortable with the government having the power to DEMAND that my body, or anyone elseās body, be used against their will and without consent, for the benefit of anyone else.
But. Since YOU brought it up- āIf it was an unfortunate assaultā- if a healthy fetus in a healthy pregnancy was created through an act of rape- why do you think abortion is acceptable in that situation?
I realize that Tumblr and just online posts in general can be a terrible place to try to hold converstions, but I thought it might be helpful to add something from the pro-life side. Please forgive me if my words come across a bit weird - it can be hard to convey tone via text XP
Youāre right in saying that there is a fundamental issue with the argument āabortion is bad in all cases except rapeā. If that is your argument, youāre saying that a life is only worth protecting if it is convenient or desired.
Regardless of HOW the pregnancy occured, there is a life started and it is worth protecting. A child conceived in rape has the exact same value and dignity as one formed in a loving marriage, and it unfair and bigoted to treat them any differently.
Now Iām sure we can all agree that rape is despicable. I know that some people will disagree, but I hold bodily autonomy and sex to a HIGH, HIGH regard. I will be transparent and say that Iām a Christian, but my argument would still be the same from a secular point of view.
As a result of that high regard, Iām for some of the highest punishment for rapists. They abused something that is supposed to be a beautiful, joining gift of intimacy, they abused the womanās body which is a gift from God, and they inflicted mental trauma on the woman and her loved ones that will likely last a lifetime. Anyone who willingly does that is evil, and should be punished to the highest degree. Some people would support the death penalty for them.
So if we all agree that rapists deserve terrible punishment, why are we treating the child, who was completely innocent and had no choice in the situation, the same or even worse than the rapist? Really read into what happens in an abortion - theyāre not pretty, and would be regarded as torture if done to anyone else. All of that, and then they, someone who was totally innocent and just wanted a chance to grow and be safe, are killed and thrown out like garbage.
I know of people who conceived children from rape, and I know of people who were born out of rape. Both deserve the utmost love and compassion. Those mothers deserve every single helping hand, loving word, and compassionate show of support that we can give. I fully support them getting everything they need, and believe they should be loved and protected. Once the children are born, I believe that they, too, should receive that same love and compassion. Itās not easy knowing what happened before you were born, but I believe that they and the mother can grow and thrive and overcome the past and what they cannot control.
I know I canāt change the law- there will likely always be an exception for rape, and while I still strongly believe what I do, I understand why that exception is there. I just wish that people would take this into consideration, and that maybe it will touch their heart and make them consider that there are now two beautiful, worthy lives in this situation.
So, to be clear, as a staunchly, staunchly pro-choice advocate- I agree that there shouldnāt be an exception for rape. That is because I donāt think there should be restrictions on abortion at all. Up to the point of viability, when a c-section can perform the same function, abortion must be an option for a pregnant person who no longer consents to carrying a pregnancy.Ā
You also seem to be taking the stance that a fetus is a person, is a child, and honestly? Iām fine with that too. I think that the distinction of when exactly a fetus becomes aĀ āpersonā is fuzzy and ultimately- not important.Ā
Because no PERSON has the right to use the body of another without consent for any reason. No PERSON, no matter their age or size or circumstance, no matter their need, gets to take parts of another personās body or use another personās body, without consent, ever, for any reason.Ā
No person is entitled to another personās body, and if a fetus is a person, that applies to them too, even if that fetus was conceived consensually. And no person should be legally or ethically obligated to let another person use their body against their will, even if the person in need is a fetus.Ā
Access to abortion protects our fundamental right to consent to what happens to us.Ā And no person should be allowed to violate that right, and the government has no business overruling that right.Ā
