SAMIRA'S PASSIVE, SUBTLY INDULGENT SMILE BECOMES AN OUTRIGHT GRIN.
She wants to make fun of him. She does. But she's not so exhausted, so inundated by growing pains, that she fails to revel in how nice it feels to be taken care of by someone else. His generosity is subtle in some ways—unsubtle in others—and though she's not sure how to classify these two offers specifically, they sure are great to hear—to imagine.
And he wouldn't be him if he didn't punctuate a proposed act of service with something unbelievably corny!
Samira pushes herself up, held upright by her palms splayed out on the couch behind her. This decreases the distance between them—she wants it known she won't hold him at am arm's length or further. Not on purpose. She did that for long enough already.
"Well—" She rolls out her neck, testing the extent of her soreness. "—I'm glad you'd be satisfied, but now that you've put those ideas into my head—"
Let her think. Let her kiss him while she does, like it'll help. Or maybe she simply saw an opportunity and took it.
"—I do like looking at you, too, you know. So—we can take a minute, and—I don't know. If I run a bath, will you keep me company?" Leaving him to his own devices would be poor hosting and poor girlfriending—even if he does have something to drink.
no, he's not to be left to his own devices. how's a dog to feel useful without anyone whose needs it can fulfil?
any residual stiffness melts away when she leans in: exhaling a sigh into her kiss, one hand sliding up the back of her knee and halfway up her thigh. look at him, trying to take care of her, and yet he's the one feeling terribly indulged. here, he could stay. if it were what she needed, he'd stay here all night. chasing her, even, when she breaks away.
❝ happy to. ❞ instant nod, perhaps overeager. he can't sit still for too long, while at the same time refusing to move even an inch. throw him a bone. ❝ happy to run that bath for you, too. just say the word. ❞
PAIN'S nothing new -- not by a long shot -- but the unique combination of circumstances and injuries means that Q's insistent -- and very necessary -- movement has Alec's vision tunnelling for a few vertigo-inducing moments. Well, longer than that, actually.
In fact, by the time he and Q have crossed over to a nearby verge, Alec's vision still hasn't righted itself. Nor has the younger's grip loosened on him; were his body not protesting the circumstances quite so vehemently, if he wasn't so acutely aware of the reality that Q was in danger alongside him, he might've been heartened by the implicit desire for protection that the gesture suggested.
"Focus" is the order he eventually offers. Be my eyes. "I can get us somewhere safe. One of the safehouses-" promises, promises. In this state? It was about as convincing a promise as his internal declaration of perfect driving before they'd been T-boned had been. "You need to watch. You need to make sure there's no one watching. I can't." His tongue feels heavy in his mouth, dry. His throat even moreso. He's lost the better part of his peripheral vision, and the dwindling range of vision he's got going on isn't doing him any favours. He's fine, theoretically. Fine enough to get Q to safety, if nothing else. "Okay?" It isn't a question.
his panic's very obviously unhelpful given the conundrum they've found themselves in, q is more than aware. the rational awareness does little to stave it off, however. arguably his body's quite right in its assessment that a fight-or-flight response would be appropriate. given that neither trevelyan nor q seem capable of either at the moment, what's left for him to do other than panic?
turn snippy, it turns out.
❝ alec, you can barely bloody walk, how in god's name are you going to-- ❞ q cuts himself off as he runs out of breath, from both his own trepidation and the strain of trying to keep trevelyan upright. it is easier to be indignant than afraid. ❝ fine. have it your way. ❞
with a deep breath, and trying his hardest not to buckle under the threat of further attack, q keeps dragging them onwards and away from the wreckage of the car. the sheen of sweat on his forehead has very little to do with the raging fire. ❝ we'll just keep walking down this road and i'll keep my eyes peeled, is that it? ❞ now that the initial shock is wearing off, he can feel the stretch of the cuts on his face, and how his legs are shaking. the notion that they could make it further even than two miles is preposterous. ❝ will you give me a heads-up before you faint again, at least? ❞
ponies: season 1.
dialogue prompts from the first season of ponies.
what made you decide to venture out today?
you do not have to lie. i love you for trying, though.
honey, you're bleeding.
you want to crash? i've got a couch.
i just don't know what i'm going to do with my life now.
sometimes in life, you have to live with not knowing.
i didn't know you had kids.
there's nowhere for me to go. not a place.
oh, god. you're one of those people who asks if you can ask a question.
we're women. people only look at us if they want to fuck us or marry us.
fuck, i should have gone to college.
take off your wedding ring. men will be more helpful if they think you're single.
hey. you can do this.
everything is flammable, once you set it on fire.
i'm always saying things ar fine when they're clearly not.
you know when people get killed? when they relax.
hold my hand.
what happened to your face?
i would have noticed you.
i don't care what the reason is. that's for you to know.
i can't quite place where you're from.
i wasn't expecting you to make the first move.
now you're just trying to torture me.
if you're here to kill me, just do it already.
how are you so fast?
i know how much you care about the women no one else cares about.
they said you were nobody. are you nobody?
to me, you are just a little ant on the wall. i can squash you.
i'm sorry for putting you in this position. this risk.
you don't have to lie for me to help you.
i can't hide forever. i want to die free.
i can convince anyone of anything.
i don't know if this is helping. just let me know if you want me to stop, okay?
thank you for trusting me.
maybe we're somewhere in between who we were with them, and who we are without them.
don't worry. i'm not afraid of a little danger.
i'm sorry about your _____. i lost mine, too.
i think they're following us.
can't i come with you?
i won't be there to save you next time.
hold my hand. that'll sell it.
honestly, i kind of just want to be on my own. is that okay?
i know what kind of _____ you are.
i did a job. i did it well.
half measures in this life will only get you killed.
we're not children anymore.
i can take care of myself. i have been for years.
i can hear you in there. you're not fine.
how long as you gonna keep ignoring me?
sometimes we gotta be other people.
it's just sex. it doesn't have to be a big deal.
i was worried it would change things between us.
i should be allowed to decide how i feel about my life.
is that what you think? that i don't have feelings?
my life may be small, but in my small way, i am defiant.
what if the answers you find are worse than not knowing?
you didn't deserve this.
come over tonight. let me make it up to you.
i never used to break any rules.
sometimes it's like i'm having five conversations in my head at once.
am i funny to you?
relax. just let me take care of you.
who did this to you?
everyone's got a weak spot.
do i scare you? because i should.
do you want a plate? we can eat together.
it's _____ in the morning. i nearly shot you.
as you may have noticed, i have some issues with control.
go outside. get some air.
you've gotta be pushy in life, or you're not going to get anywhere.
this is your mess. you can clean it up.
you don't know who is under your lies anymore.
after all this, don't we deserve our own happiness?
i want you to live your life. whatever that looks like.
are you still mad?
couldn't you just lie, like everyone else?
i try not to lie to anyone, especially you.
you're getting what you want, like you always do.
try not to miss me too much.
you're alive. what the fuck happened?
i promised you i would come back.
if i make it out of this alive, maybe i'll call you.
you'll be safe there, as long as you need.
hey, look at me. you're gonna be okay.
i really didn't think we would ever speak again.
was it you following me? are you going to tell me why?
i never got to know your real name.
whatever happens, happens to the both of us. i'm not leaving you.
time helps. when you do something horrible, time doesn't make it go away. but it helps.
i lied a lot. i don't want to lie anymore.
we have to stop meeting like this.
sorry actually not done talking about tits-out abbot on this fine sunday eve:
what do you wanna bet he was secretly hoping mohan of all people would walk in on shootout cowboy abbot (why else leave the door open, buddy), but then when she does walk in he's trying so so hard to play it cool with the gravelly voice and sucking in his stomach and flexing his muscles and jokingly putting it out there that he Has Mental Health and "i'll pay for it" i mean. hello. look up peacocking in the dictionary and what do you see. has an old man's crush ever been more obvious.

He was so disappointed when he realized she wasn't talking about him LMAO. Old man STAND UP!
mutt runs his calloused fingers through his hair, now that is it unbound. his fingers catch on a knot. stoic and inexpressive, he tears right through it. the hairs drift to the ground and the wind carries it off along with the rotten leaves and smells from the nearby streambed, close enough they can hear it. he might take a dip later. clear his head, even as bad as he was at that. wash some of this off.
his eyes are large and dark amidst the harshened edges of his gristle when he glances up at yusuf.
"just a little." admitting to his ravenous hunger feels like admitting a wound. inward, more than outward. the strain of aloneness strips the meat from his bones as much as the want for food. "but you did," stubborn little cuss, "forgo these things to find me, i mean."
he knows hunger. the real kind that eats an aching hole right through your middle. this is not that. thankfully, he's been blessed in such a way that he's not had to endure such hardship in a very long time.
mutt cannot know all the things yusuf's withstood, nor how good they've each become at taking care of one another. all mutt knows is the unashamed delight with which yusuf tends to enjoy his food. it makes sense for him to assume yusuf would begrudge mutt their last reserves now.
❝ here. ❞ he readily hands mutt the third of a loaf that was still sitting in his bag, perhaps even a little too quickly, as though worried mutt might change his mind otherwise. ❝ what's it matter? we're here now, and you can eat. ❞
THAT bit of self-soothing -- or whatever the bordering-on-self-harm-adjacent equivalent may be -- is what coaxes Liam into moving before his brain can offer the impulse; knees meet the trodden concrete without so much as a wince of protest, hands moving to comfort in a way he knows might not be well-received.
A grip on Jack's wrist -- the not-so-gentle coaxing of pulling it away from where the attached hand is tangled in his hair -- brings a watery wince to Liam's face. It's hard to be the formidable one, the strong one, when you're every bit the bleeding heart. He replaces Jack's hand with his own, a far softer touch: a touch that wants desperately to pull his husband's head to his shoulder, to shield him.
He resists the urge. Still, he tries to offer something solid for Jack to focus on.
"Baby..." the first word to get the wobble in his voice out, the pain at seeing Jack so distraught, "I don't know how you're supposed to do this, either. I don't. And I still can't imagine how-" Christ, not even his thesauraus of a brain could conjure up an apt word right now "-Godawful this is for you. I can't. But I know you can do it, even if I don't know how. Because you're still my Jack. And you're stubborn, and you're impatient, and you're so, so, so determined. And I'm not letting you lose to something like this, baby. Because you'd hate losing to this more than you're hating the process of figuring it out."
as alien as his body now feels to him, it's as though he's lost control of himself in his entirety. he is no longer the person he'd convinced himself he was: independent, indestructible, in charge. most of all: dependable.
paradoxically, this makes any lapse in self-control twice as humiliating in front of liam. specifically liam. one bad day's enough to forget years of unlearning his misconceptions about his supposed role in their relationship. here's the one person who's meant to be able to lean on him at all times, no exceptions. and now look what he's done.
liam's touch dissipates jack's anger immediately, but in doing so reveals the ugly guilt underneath. how in the hell is he to know if liam's view on him's even still true?
❝ i'm sorry you've gotta deal with this. it's bullshit putting this all on you. ❞ convenient, almost, to have an excuse for why he's misty-eyed in struggling to meet liam's gaze. his scalp still stings underneath liam's fingers. jack won't let himself touch him, but can't seem to bring himself to pull away, either. ❝ i'm sorry. ❞
SHE CAN'T COMPLETELY BLAME HIM—NOT WHEN SHE'S DOING THE SAME PRECARIOUS MENTAL GYMNASTICS AND ULTIMATELY FEELS LIKE SHE'S FLOUNDERING.
He asks how tired she is. He looks too thoughtful to be placid, too self-aware to be nonchalant. Maybe he'll be able to sense the vibrantly expressive confusion that overtakes her features. Being so reactive to his question means she doesn't have to acknowledge the simple physical intimacy—the way it begs to be intuitive, the way it already seems so right.
Samira scoffs nervously. She debates explaining that she's incapable of feeling tired when her sympathetic nervous system's been so actively engaged. She knows from experience the comedown is inevitable—and acknowledging it now counts for something.
"I'm glad you're here," is what she ultimately says, which isn't an answer. She shifts, re-learning how to lounge comfortable on her own furniture.
"I wanted to host, but—are you asking because I could stand to be more entertaining?"
She's only half sarcastic about all of this.
the mental list of things he intends to unpack with his therapist seems to keep growing with every minute he spends in samira's company. newest addition: how come it's easier for him to find his footing once she's the one becoming visibly nervous? what's that say about him, exactly?
his smile's only in part thanks to her repeated assurance -- they're both glad he's here. now that's out of the way.
he's watching the hand he's running down her shin, considerate as though musing aloud. ❝ more trying to figure out if you might need a foot rub, or a bath… ❞
let this be his version of buying something they've mentioned in passing. when he glances back at her, his expression's wry enough for her to see the cheesy line coming: ❝ i'm more than satisfied just looking at you. ❞
@pittbangs: ‘ i lost her. that's what happened. ’ for abbot ( "sacred and terrible air" prompts; accepting )
been a long day for all of them, but while he's had the privilege of a full two-hour nap before starting his shift tonight, she's been on her feet for closer to twelve. looks the part.
the fatigue's fuel to rumination, of course. and remorse makes for highly effective tinder. he's been there.
❝ or maybe what happened is that you helped her go. ❞ he's trying not to stare into where her self-reproach burns the brightest, instead offering his sympathy from off to the side. from what he's gathered, which is admittedly little, it's been one of those cases where the outcome's set in stone from the start.
by all rights, he should be an expert in handling loss by now.
instead he's surprised to find he's envious, and so his gaze ends up scattering across the hallway. never did figure out whether speaking to liam one last time would've helped anything at all. ❝ got the chance to say her goodbyes. that counts for a lot. ❞

"i don't want to be alone tonight." robby/abbot <3 (med student babies or current-times babies)
𝗔𝗦 𝗦𝗔𝗜𝗗 𝗕𝗬 𝗩𝗔𝗫'𝗜𝗟𝗗𝗔𝗡
"This feels like more of a 'pants on' kind of conversation."
This isn't the weirdest thing Abbot's seen in Robby's dorm room, but the late night cereal bowl and boxer briefs combination is certainly one for the books. He's used to it by now.
Probably.
"Watch your step. I dropped my Tamagotchi in here somewhere and I still haven't figured out where. You'll, uh...you'll see why in a minute."
hardly the first time abbot's seen robby in his underwear.
still wondering where those rumours came from, mikey?
❝ not a conversation ❞, or his sullen way of shutting it down before it's started as he shoulders his way in through the door. the beauty of robby's that abbot's not required to explain himself. supposedly.
he eyes the various hoodies strewn about the place. ❝ is it because you've killed it? burial via dirty laundry? that's rough, man. ❞
i know i don't have to explain but: not much writing here for yet another weekend due to a combination of period cramps and me bricking it about doing my first tv interview (???) tonight, bear with me
SHE'S SUCH A FRAUD.
This kid, this student—he's hardly her friend. He was—is, still is, let's not waste away into pessimistic despair, Margot—hardly more than a mark. A chink in The Organization's armor.
She can't believe he was ever so close to one of its young members. He's recuperating, hospitalized, because he's too sensitive. Cares too much.
Margot never laid a finger on him, and he'd never hurt anybody. Except for himself.
"He wasn't conscious," Margot admits unsteadily. "And I'm not—I can't stay. I'm not from here," Has she already said that? How desperate is she to distance herself from this city, from this tragedy?
"It isn't—" Sigh! "It doesn't have to worry you. Not out here.—I'm trying to be better. About control."
without having to say so outright, it's clear santos has been there: worrying about someone when you're convinced you can't afford to, lingering, unsettled. why else keep standing here when she could be going home. she's quick to sound annoyed on a stranger's behalf: ❝ probably one of those things you can't control. ❞
it's what she's been told, anyway. the bad shit only gets worse when you try suppressing it, etc etc. cue eyeroll. (she is trying. she's trying really, really hard.)
for a moment, there's only what counts for silence out here: city traffic, intermittent sirens, occasionally yelling from the ambulance bay. santos is looking back at the building which will suck her back in come six thirty in the morning. ❝ could check on him for you if he's still here tomorrow. ❞
@rvolving: "you want me to make this easy for you?" for santos! 🫡
his fumble is still within view, though the man hasn’t anchored again; he seems to be wending his way as efficiently through the bar as the bar will allow him. he stops more than once to bend over and stage-whisper somethings to his scattered friends, which bev surmises are either excuses for his premature departure or gossip about the sad old man who’d tried to chat him up.
they had been very near the same age, and not in leagues beverly would refer to as vastly different. he’s three decades unpracticed, is the problem. and he has, in the past, been better at holding his liquor.
he turns to face santos at the bar, one brow raised higher than the other, and releases a posture-altering amount of weight onto his elbow.
“—no,” he sighs, dreading to discover how much she’s witnessed. “go on and enjoy it.”
so what if she's still gotta work on her bedside manner; she's off the clock and thus free of her professional obligation to extend sympathy to every last fucker who's suffering. get in line, why don't you. instead, the glee on her face betrays her lie immediately: ❝ not sure enjoy's the word i'd use. ❞ she's sure she's read somewhere that your likelihood of experiencing schadenfreude increases with the level of fucked up your own life's become. she's here without anyone to share whispered gossip with. let's leave it there.
she's grabbed her drink to approach what looks like the resurfacing of a mid-life crisis. it's what she imagines that age must be like: lonely and a bit embarrassing. hasn't been all that long since she's started entertaining even getting there herself. ❝ so you're into public humiliation, huh? ❞
there's a part of him that feels guilty, like a disappointment, for not being able to match yusuf's convictions. that feels imbalanced. his warmth has always been so strong and unfaltering. mutt saw that in his dreams for three years, then beside the first fire. better sit here by me, little warrior.
"in the future, i will try better." further acceptance of their eternal camaraderie, or not permitting this to happen again? his face somehow looks more drawn and wan and dirty and small than before. his voice falters several times as though he's trying to work past a slit throat, or vocal cords that aren't his own. it's clear from the way he speaks that his throat has suddenly drawn tight, like an animal seeking shelter within its own shell.
"—you must have not slept and ate properly, coming to find me so."
with this, yusuf seems satisfied. ❝ i'll hold you to that ❞, ready to acquiesce, though it could just as reasonably be read as a threat. he would prefer for mutt to be cautious for his own sake, of course. sometimes a guilty conscience makes for an acceptable workaround.
it doesn't take someone as intuitive as yusuf to understand mutt would rather like to drop the subject. it honours him to do so in such a sympathetic manner, however. yusuf takes this to mean mutt knows what it is to worry about another. there is hope yet that he will come to understand.
❝ we were free to eat or rest whenever we liked. you were not. ❞ while nicolò had provided ample provisions earlier, yusuf doubts mutt would have eaten his fill. he may not know him very well, but he certainly knows him not to be selfish. bending back over, yusuf starts rummaging in his bag. ❝ there's bread if you're still hungry. ❞

"How charitable of you. Are you going to show up at my door tomorrow and ask me if I know your Lord and Savior Jesus Christ?"
Lestat's disdain for small talk is readily apparent, but that's not what really bothers him. What bothers him is that he feels like he's being watched. Studied. And not in a way that appeals to his ego. Careless as he may seem—as he often is, and has been on many, many occasions—he doesn't take kindly to being watched. Whoever (or whatever) is in front of him right now is something that demands his full attention, and it is both distracting and annoying.
A sever passes them by with a platter of drinks. He briefly considers throwing one at him. Just to see what he would do.
"And what, pray tell, are you offering, hm? Salvation? Damnation? Virgin wives and women and whores and all the debauchery that Heaven and Hell can afford?"
a thousand years ago, give or take, lestat's immediate suspicions may not have been all that far off from the truth, if perhaps culturally misplaced. they'd have met in an entirely different part of the world then, granted.
it makes yusuf smile at a joke lestat cannot physically be privy to. he'll need to relay this to nico later, revel in the historical irony of it.
❝ no need to worry about that. i'm batting for another team. ❞ tonal equivalent of a wink: goes for the prophet and the women alike. yusuf's terribly fond of a double meaning, and he wants to assume this one might be partial to a bit of wordplay, too.
he's far from deterred. ❝ more interested in hearing your thoughts on tonight's performance. what drives you to performing on a stage, do you think? ❞
much like a car ride, the gym makes for a good place for those more unpredictable conversations, where the natural ends between each set makes them feel a bit less like a can of worms. chris gets a sense of that.
" my toes are fine. i'm fuckin' ... fred astaire. " in place of declining another ten minutes, chris hops off his treadmill in imitation of the man's grace.
props his arm up on ed's handrail. pressing at ed's settings until the motor whirrs and the belt gradually increases speed under ed's feet.
" anyways, this is about you. what're you trying to shake up? "
if meechum allowed himself envy, he'd be envious of chris' grace. of the confidence he must assume comes naturally, most of all. chris has always seemed very in charge of himself to him.
meechum doesn't falter at the increased speed, nor chris interfering. but he does briefly look almost embarrassed. ❝ didn't say it was about me. ❞ perhaps the heat down his neck could be misconstrued as a mere symptom of physical exertion. he's still prone to flinching at the unfamiliar sensation of being listened to. most of the conversations meechum has remain superficial and get dropped haphazardly. no one else pays attention like chris does. meechum would not have brought it up with anyone else. there's a pattern there somewhere.
the irony of asking while literally running on the spot doesn't escape him, and so his dry delivery's an attempt at leaning into it: ❝ you never feel stuck? ❞
