How frail she seems to him now, even in his current state. A gaping wound in his chest bleeding through every bandage, a bloodied dam that's fit to burst, and yet she cowers in what should have been her home. It was her home. And maybe there's a chance, infinitesimal as it is, that it still could be. A part of him, bloodied and unbidden, still wants that to be true, more than anything else. But he is hungry, and he is cruel, and slowly but surely, he is closing in on her.

Venom pools in the sac of his cheeks as the pit of his stomach coils in anticipation. Of what, he doesn't know yet, but the skin continues to pull taut around the wound with every breath, every heave of his chest to remind him that he's unable to die and who exactly he has to thank for it.

"Don't look at him," David says, unblinking as he starts to move again, step by individual step. "He can't save you."

There is a part of her, small and fleeting, that believes David would never kill her, much less harm her, but as he draws ever closer, Star's doubt grows rapidly. His voice snaps her focus back to him, as if on command, from the silent plea she had been giving Marko; save her, help her, do something, anything-

Star keeps one hand half way up, to attempt and keep space between them, her eyes flickering down to the wound, the bandages soaked with dark red blood. The way David looks at her is only one she knows, in spite of never seeing it firsthand; it's hunger, and she can feel her half-beating heart flutter faster. The sensation in her veins is familiar, adrenaline hitting her full speed, as an idea sparks to her then, a last ditch effort; her final Hail Mary as it were.

"...You're going to hurt yourself more," Star's voice is breathy, her airstill hand shaking, brown eyes wide, terror and tear-filled, breathing so quickly she nearly feels faint. "L-let me help. Marko's- he's been doing everything himself, I-... David, please."

"Help?" David hisses, hollow and rough as his body seizes with pain, determined to keep himself upright as he stumbles forward, the rotting abscess in his chest stinking up the air.

"You want to help?" It's enough to make him laugh; an awful, wheezing sound like a death rattle born from the hole in his lungs. He straightens himself out as much as his body will allow him to, the air thick with the smell of rot as the bandages around his chest start to slough off.

"You've helped enough!" David snarls, rabid and wild as his gums split open and his eyes begin to bleed.

He surges forward.

R☆ckstar☆ ★ ✮ ★ ☆: this is a loaded answer. It slaps Lestat like an avalanche he has been watching from the bottom of the mountain, after triggering it with a swipe of his skis. His hips tilt so that he can rest his hand over the higher half while glaring at the wall of anger. Another fight, another night. It's true. The courtesy of Lestat de Lioncourt is to invite his former lover into the maw of nostalgia: a penthouse with tender, ambient lighting, emulating the later 80s which Lestat missed, buried underground until he was forcibly thwarted out of it. He wants to yell right back, to throw something heavy, like a guitar nearby that he cherishes the most. Instead, the rockstar chuckles. In a room with their attorneys, Lestat wears the same accusatory face. Now, the tables have turned into the cradle of his abode, right in the heart of San Fran. He is exhausted. Maybe from a high, maybe from echoes of the Tooth Team, and Molar March, and Denture Crew. Good fucking God.

"I have no expectations for you, Louis," Lestat offers gently, suddenly. He does not surrender, but he does not budge when he realizes what Louis is still running away from. He knew what he was doing when he settled down with Daniel Molloy in Dubai, still thinking his ex was fucking dead in the ground. The smile spreads, climbing higher. "Not anymore." He cuts sharper. "Burning the laptop, congratulations. You have accomplished so much. And since then, you've done nothing. To me, it speaks louder than any apology." He side steps Louis with a pained grimace. Oh, how his heart aches to still love him. And it twists in Lestat's gut enough to suddenly whip the rockstar around and face his fledgling. "It is my turn Louis." Lestat filters through his gritted teeth; his pupils shake from tension.

"You've had your disjointed fantasy. I hope your fill sated you because I am taking the supper plate now, for I've been famished and silenced for too long. And someone, someone so dear and so close, this entire time, knew there was sustenance an inch away and lied, LIED, Louis, about the plates being empty. Now get OUT, I will have my bubble bath, and it's going to be far more fulfilling than trying to understand your utter RESENTMENT of me." Lestat jerks his head dismissively in Louis's direction.

In my heart, I knew, I knew Lestat wasn't wrong. Not entirely. Every accusation he laid at my feet that night bore some resemblance to the truth, however faint it was. I blinked once. Twice. I could not dismiss Lestat from my vision like I had in Paris. This was no longer a figment of my imagination, nor a ghost from my past. This was a revenant, flesh and blood and honest in a way I had not prepared myself for.

Daniel had warned me of the dangers of subjectivity on more than one occasion and, like a fool, I had dismissed it in favor of the tale I had told. Lestat was right: it was a disjointed fantasy, and it was one that was crumbling right before my eyes.

"Is that what you think?" I whispered, coming to a terrible realization. "You think I hate you?"

I wanted to hate him. I wanted, more than anything, to hate him for everything he said to me that night. And a part of me wanted him to continue believing that I hated him more than anything else in this world. That I was just as guilty as Daniel Molloy for the picture his book had painted of Lestat de Lioncourt. That I was a willing participant in the slander of his name that also bore some semblance to the truth, that the odyssey of recollection deemed him a villain above all else...but I wasn't. I didn't. I wanted to, but I never could.

I never could.

"You do, don't you." I said, unable to wait for an answer, the weight of a century weighing down on me with the fervor of Atlas himself.
