❝  got  a  real  fun  game,  i  know  you’ll  like.  it’s  where  you  run  from  me  and  try  to  hide.   ❞   rarely  did  she  speak,  if  ever.  voice  not  above  a  low  murmur,  loud  enough  to  hear  but  not  enough  to  pick  out,  calculated  breathing  masking  it,  haunting,  inhuman.  julie  knew  the  cost  of  identification,  she  and  frank  had  toed  the  line  one  too  many  times  (  quick  flash  of  skin,  voices  spoken  just  above  a  whisper,  all  to  see  that  fear,  fear,  fear,  raw  and  untouched:  we’re  human,  we’re  like  you,  what  you  could  be  )  yet  the  reward  always  outweighed  the  risk   —   when  people  knew  you  were  like  them,  it  made  it  easier  to  be  outsmarted,  taken  down,  fear  charged  with  hope  and  the  game  was  over;  but  lucky  for  legion,  they  knew  how  to  play.

❝  if  you  play  this  right,  you  won’t  go  first.   ❞   cornered,  she  had  her  cornered.  tilt  of  her  head,  flash  of  her  knife  and  she’s  angling  it  outwards,  pointing,  carefully  turning  her  head  to  the  side  where  sparks  lit  in  the  distance;  a  nearby  generator  that  she  knew,  oh  she  knew,  would  have  a  very  neat  pair  of  hands  waiting  for  her  to  cut  through  (  unspoken,  but  there:  make  a  decision,  nancy  ).

❝   it’s  a  beautiful  knife,   ❞   she  whistles  low,  sudden,  not  one  for  loud  compliments  or  proclamations  of  interest,  and  yet  there’s  intrigue  (  wandering  through,  just  a  passerby,  hoping  to  sate  that  ever  present  itch  ).  weren’t  many  ‘  living  ’  in  this  masquerade  of  actors  made  to  perform,  strung  on  a  string  by  the  spider  bitch  itself,  and  julie  had  always  been  the  inquisitive  type  (  not  that  anyone  who  didn’t  know  her  personally  would  have  figured,  her  worth  was  compromised  of  parties  and  the  promise  of  good  grades  ).  never  one  for  intricate  conversation,  she  pulls  out  her  very  own,  worn  but  cared  for,  rusted  yet  sharp,  dangling  ‘tween  her  fingers  and  twirled  ‘round,  ‘round;  quiet  amusement.

❝   cutting  right  where  the  fear  should  be.   ❞    there’s  humor  on  her  tongue  and  she  sighs.   ❝   hey,  what  favors  are  you  scoring  that  gets  you  new  gear  ?  just  between  us  “  besties  ”.   ❞

❝   die  for  the  attention,  pray  for  a  reaction.   ❞   cold,  hostile,  taunting.  watching,  watching  behind  hole  cut  eyes  as  she  always  did,  as  she  always  would,  analyze  it  all.  new  ways  to  poke  and  prod  and  pry,  cruel  mockery  was  all  she  was  good  for;  after  all,  what  better  way  to  spend  your  downtime  than  pissing  off  a  local  neighbour  ?  (  introductions  were  SO  60′s,  old  people  playing  nice  on  their  porch  steps,  it  made  her  gag  )  —  boredom  was  a  killer,  and  she’d  decided  long  before  stumbling  her  way  into  hell  that  if  she  was  going  to  die,  it  would  be  on  her  own  terms,  not  sat  around  wasting  away  in  the  debilitating  normalcy  of  it  all.

❝   if  this  is  the  start,  then  let’s  see  how  far  you’re  gonna  take  this  one.   ❞

silent  is  she,  calculating  is  the  way  she  studies  him,  dark  stare  following  his  motion  quickly  and  it’s  there  she  barks  out  laughter.  short,  loud,  followed  easily  with  the  throw  of  her  knife,  rusted,  stained  fresh  with  wet  viscera,  up,  up,  only  to  be  caught  betwixt  pale  fingers  just  as  smoothly.  julie  wasn’t  one  to  converse  with  many  of  the  other  homicidal  freaks  that  served  as  mere  acquaintances  in  the  quiet  ‘tween  what  the  entity  commanded  and  what  free  time  they  had,  no.  that  was  all  frank   —   sometimes  joey  if  he  really  felt  so  inclined,  but  more  often  than  not,  frank  ran  the  show  legion  paraded  around.  

she  was  happier,  if  one  could  call  it  that,  more  invested  in  just  sitting  and  watching.  observing  them  and  their  habits  to  adopt  some  in  her  own  fashion  (  with  every  day  a  monotonous  hellfest,  she  needed  inspiration  SOMEHOW  ),  often  opting  to  fuck  around  with  a  few  of  them  (  steal  traps,  lay  them  down  in  the  brush  and  watch  from  a  distance  with  cruel  humor  ).  she  owed  no  one  anything,  if  they  wanted  to  fuck  around  with  her  to  pass  the  time  they  were  more  than  welcome  to,  but  she  had  no  business  making  friends  here  (  she  had  her  pleasures,  her  family,  and  that’s  all  there  was  to  it  ).  enemies  ?  she’d  welcomed  the  moment  they’d  stepped  through  that  fog,  amanda  especially  made  for  a  very  amusing  pet,  if  not  dangerously  annoying.  julie’s  entertainment  definitely  came  from  pissing  her  off  if  nothing  else.

still,  there  was  no  helping  her  own  interpersonal  intrigue  that  arose  from  HIS  approach.  ‘  the  shape  ‘  as  he  was  so  aptly  named  (  an  all  too  embarrassing  reminder  of  one  too  many  b  -  movie  horror  flicks  she’d  watched  in  ormond,  fuckin’  cheesy  as  all  hell  but  who  was  she  to  judge  ),  he  was  nothing  short  of  warning  sirens,  the  same  she’d  hear  back  home  when  shit  got  too  real  and  snow  storms  threatened  to  smother  all  in  their  path,  lay  waste  to  houses  and  families  alike.  she’d  found  the  resemblance  fitting  in  a  fucked  up  way,  laughed  about  it  with  joey  to  stave  off  any  lingering  nerves  (  serial  murderers  with  fucking  anxiety,  what  a  joke  that  was  --  no,  they’d  pave  their  path  like  promised,  julie  would  make  sure  of  it  ).  

maybe,  she  wondered,  this  was  what  nightmares  were  made  of,  the  survivors  all  seemed  pretty  damn  sure  of  it;  intimidating  auras,  unreadable  demeanor  that  she’d  study,  study  until  she  made  her  own  story  out  of  it.  for  that’s  all  killing  was  really,  copycats  upon  copycats  until  they’d  decidedly  made  their  own  brand  out  of  nothing  but  a  row  of  achievements  that  laid  neatly  beneath  the  earth. documentaries,  news  paper  articles,  folktales,  her  own  pen  scratched  notebook  she’d  managed  to  find  in  the  snow  one  day,  a  gift  from  the  entity  she  figured,  filled  with  ‘  tips  &  tricks  ‘  and  all  the  gory  details  a  young  homicidal  prodigy  might  best  equip  themselves  with.  at  the  very  least,  watching  him  in  the  silence  of  it  all  with  a  gaze  trained  too  steadily  to  be  entirely  without  life,  she  had  something  new  to  add  to  her  list.

❝   what  —  you  want  me  to  go  get  ‘em  ?   ❞   there  was  a  sliver  of  mockery  in  her  voice,  laughter  still  on  the  edges  of  it  as  she  shifted  her  head,  peering  down  at  the  familiar  blade  with  that  special  letter  scratched  into  the  wood  of  it,  handle  growing  warm  in  her  palm.

you  don’t,  you  don’t,  he  never  did,  but  she  knew  he  would.  she’s  all  teeth  sunken  into  her  own  lips  and  boney  fingers  firmly  grasping  his  collar,  decaying  gaze  trained  emptily  ‘pon  his  own  beneath  a  mask  sculpted  to  her  face  as  though  it  were  a  new  home,  second  skin,  and  she’s  grinning  wryly  through  it  all;  his  spitfire  words,  the  way  her  hand  gripped  the  collar  of  his  jacket,  her  own  self-indulgence  as  she  shifted  back  to  lift  the  bottom  of  her  mask  for  it  was  only  the  two  of  them  there  and  no  prying  eyes,  calming  cries  to  “  take  it  easy  “,  would  settle  this  blaze  (  worry  bridged  the  glass  casing  of  joey  &  susie  far  too  often,  julie  found  it  endearing  when  it  wasn’t  annoying,  scratching  at  her  skin  with  a  comfort  she  found  too  vulnerable  to  voice  ).

❝   —  but  you  want  to.   ❞

she  murmurs  derisive  truth  through  the  sharp  fog  that  pricked  at  her  skin  with  a  numbness  she  vaguely  remembers,  slurries  of  snow  that  shallowed  the  cabin  near  them,  and  she  glances  down  at  her  hand,  eases  her  grip  ‘fore  laying  it  to  rest  by  her  side,  by  her  hip.  so  quick  to  grab,  lash,  bite,  pull  for  the  smallest  scraps  of  attention  (  all  his,  all  theirs,  the  only  people  who’d  ever  see  through  her  ).  she’s  cloying  she  knows  (  embarrassing  how  quick  she  is  to  claw  out,  her  own  unconscious  plea  that  she’d  never  say  aloud  :  don’t  leave  ),  there’s  rage  that  burns  in  the  pit  of  both  of  them,  harsh  words  that  threatens  her  to  bite  back  with  something  meaner  and  yet  she  doesn’t.  

she  simmers  down  low,  nothing  short  of  annoyed  though  not  quite  the  cruelty  she’s  so  used  to  embracing  when  they  fought.  for  all  his  anger  that  thrills  her,  tempts  her  to  urge  him  on  further,  she  doesn’t.  all  snide  grins  and  easy  mockery  until  she  feels  the  suffocating  swell  of  loss  constrict  her  throat,  the  potentiality  of  it,  tongue  like  lead  in  her  mouth  and  she’s  sighing,  rolling  her  eyes,  stepping  back  for  once  much  to  her  own  chagrin  (  maybe  she  HAS  been  taking  a  page  out  of  susie’s  book,  half  listening  to  all  her  self  -  help  bullshit,  or  maybe  she’s  scared  for  the  first  time  since  she’d  met  frank   —   but  fuck  that  ).

❝   you’ve  been  acting  like  such  a  bitch  lately  —  you  want  the  cowards  way  out  ?  fine,  it’s  on  you.   ❞   she  pauses,  all  bark,  all  bite  but  that’s  not  what  she wants.  hand  taps  against  her  leg  and  she  shifts,  watching  him  without  seeing,  caught  up  in  her  own  mentally  fucked  party.
