Highland Cow

It had been a quiet trip out of Area Zero for everyone.

For the AI, it had been due to a mix of fatigue from the fight and an attempt to gather all the thoughts now bubbling around in the database he called a brain.

As expected, the children (brilliant, wonderful children they were) had succeeded in shutting down the time machine, and even managed to tether his programming from the machine to prevent further use (how they did it, he couldn’t quiet recall; perhaps that hacker girl had provided some assistance in that field?).

Either way, he had made no arguments when they offered to bring him with them out of the lab and back up to the surface. Despite the original professor’s programming fighting him every step of the way, telling him to go back and finish what he’d started, he kept moving forward with them until he felt the warmth of sunlight on his synthetic skin for the first time in…

…well, ever.

He was no longer bound to the lab anymore, at least not in the sense that he used to be. No longer bound to his initial programming, or to the original professor’s goals and desires. Free to set off and create his own.

He had eyed Arven out of the corner of his eye several times as they made their way back to the academy. It went unsaid that the boy fell in the same boat as he after everything that had happened, and he could feel guilt (both his own and that of the deceased professor’s) surging through his programming.

At the very least, this whole ordeal allowed him to finally know the truth. Perhaps this way, he could find his own chance to move on.

It was at the lab on Poco Path when Arven finally addressed him one-on-one since they were in the crater, a sad smile tugging at his mouth at his words. “Perhaps I can seek out arrangements to move the equipment for my recharging station here, then.”

Would that be possible? He wasn’t entirely sure. But then again, he had initially believed himself bound to the Area Zero lab and unable to leave, and here he was now.

An offer pushed itself to the front of his mind; an illogical one that he had a feeling he’d know the answer to once asked. But perhaps it was that guilt from before, both his and the professor’s alike, making itself known.

“And, of course, you are welcomed to stay here should the need ever arise for you again. Last thing I want to do is make you feel unwelcomed.”

He nodded in response to its plan, he really didn’t care what it did with the place. At the offer to come and visit Arven couldn’t stop the bitter little laugh from slipping out. He looked away from the robot pointedly, “I promise, the reason I feel unwelcome here has nothing to do with you.”

On one hand it was tempting to spill his guts, let out all the blackness in him, just take all out on the thing wearing his Dad’s face but...

He’d been quiet on the way out of the crater; nobody had really tried to talk to him and he appreciated that. But it felt like it was no time at all between telling Clavell all of what transpired down there and standing in front of the lighthouse with… well, couldn’t call it his Dad, but “that thing” felt more than a little mean-spirited and not really fair to it.
