in autumn you can smell the fields, burning far away
No but ya see- Iām always learning.
I mean thatās the goal right. Itās in our oath after all. Itās not hard, He really hasnāt asked much of me, to learn, to strive to learn.
Iām always learning more about Him, about Odin, always. Itās really only been a short while, thereās always much we will never know about Him but thereās a ton I donāt know about Him and I.
And so Iām learning. Iāll feel it out.
My brain feels like itās on fire because I can really only seem to focus on one of Them at a time, and here I am focusing on [insert mumbling and counting fingers] 5 of Them. Though Iāve been smart in only oathing and truly devoting to Loki and Odin.
But I move forward. I keep moving forward.
I keep learning.
I havenāt drawn in over two weeks so I thought Iād ease myself back into art (:
ok, i do mutter about the old man at times, somedays he can be a sour puss, but, he can also be, caring, loving, thoughtful, protective, compassionate, even helpfull, (though i am sometimes suspicous of it) todays challenge say nice things about the old man, ;-)
I see my personal blog is still somewhat a secret. Excellent.Ā
Anyway. As I suppose you at least know, we sat on this one for a bitā half because itās been busy, and we do hate to rush answers, and also because, well, as usual itās an interesting topic. Interesting in a few ways: namely, that from this and just kind of loosely scrolling through the blog, we donāt much flat out compliment the guy, at least overtly, and also because in just some years of general observation, that⦠somewhat seems to be an unspoken requirement across the board for Norse deities/venerated figures in general.
To start out, itās not a bad thing, if one wanted to use qualifiers like that. Hell, itās pretty logical; why venerate a deity if you donāt find anything good or appealing about them? The only answer that really comes to mind isĀ āfearā, and despite the wholeĀ āterrorā thing heās got going on, there are clearly many people not moved to Odin veneration that do okay for themselves. Even back in the day, as weāve mentioned, there werenāt a lot of people latching on to him, and when they did there was often a functional reason (warriors, poetry, kingship, the usual). Not that I think that should have a whole ton of bearing on whether someone does today, and itās pretty probable that a lot of people historically at least, I dunno, tipped their hat at him or occasionally asked for boons without being too latched on. The amount of Thor jewelry and apparel artifacts that weāve found, along with some of the written works like theĀ HĆ”rbarưsljóð, point out that there may have been some henotheism going on, or at least something similar. But it is interesting to the point that in my non-professional, somewhat cursory analysis here, the functional portion of that relationship seemed to be a big part of things, and thatās something that generally gets slightly maligned or warned against in the modern Norse, I dunno, pagansphere and beyond, for reasons of it being insulting or otherwise inappropriate. And there is, one supposes, a point to which this can be trueā but hereās HĆ”vamĆ”l 44-45, which have some interesting thoughts.
[44] If you have a good friend, and really trust him, and want good to come of your friendship, you should speak your mind with him, exchange gifts, visit him often.Ā [45] But if you have another friend, and you mistrust him but want to benefit from him, nonethelessā you should speak to him kindly, flatter him,Ā and repay his treachery with your own. (tr. Jackson Crawford)
From the Old Bastardās mouth. In fact, most of the poem reads that way, and as such usually gets a cynical reputation, which may be fairā but anon, Iām not so sure itās not just a functional, no bullshit guide on relationship maintenance, sometimes. Thereās not a lot of moral judgement going on here, other than the connotations ofĀ āgoodā andĀ ātreacheryā. Itās just telling you what to expect from certain folks, and how to deal with it, and youāll notice thatĀ āspeaking your mindā falls under trust, whereasĀ āflatteryā falls under mistrust. Interesting.
But going back to point oneā no, of course I donāt think itās bad to say legitimately nice things about him. Weād be guilty even if it was. And certainly there are some simple, usualĀ āniceā things that come to mind. His pain over Baldrās death may have been worse due to him knowing what it meant for the entirety of the world, but it was on top of pain, and every creature minus Ćƶkk cried to attempt to bring him backā that includes him. We wonāt blow smoke up your ass and call him Allfather of the Year, but one must assume he cared a little bit. Heās wise as hell (maybe Hel), cunning, tenacious, charismatic, confident. All these things are true.
But weāll say from experience, and what the HĆ”vamĆ”l and other poems, especially the Sonatorrek seem to us to supportā you will mumble. You will grumble, you will wander, you will sometimes absolutely not think you can do or say the thing or to get real personal, make the webpage. He will be an asshole, and you may repay it in kind, or vice versa. He will help you, but he will probably not swoop in to save you. It might well be the opposite.
But weāre honest about that on here, anon, because he is. The texts are not unclear on his pros and cons, to be extremely reductive. And beyond wanting people to be prepared, as you should give your friends gifts that will be useful to them, and āgenerous mutual giving is the key to lifelong friendshipā (HĆ”vamĆ”l 41, Crawford tr.)ā we like to think that if you look back up at HĆ”vamĆ”l 44, it might reveal that weāve learned something, or are trying, and in our opinion, the greatest compliment you can give a teacher is putting what youāve learned into practice.
In the end, the nicest thing we could say and do about him isnāt exactly overt, anon, but we have been writing him an extended work of praise for the last few months, here and elsewhere before and after.
Youāve all been reading it, since mid-June 2018.
Thanks for that, by the way. And happy October.

when my brain switches into overdrive research mode and everything is fascinating and everything is loud factoids and glimmers of knowledge rattling around in my head⦠thatās when I know the Old Man is around. I thought for a while he was inspiring it in me but I think now he just delights in it. god of hyperfixations and special interests, god of the kids who know too much, god of the frenzied hunt for connecting the dots one by one, sinew by sinew, and then to go further and think now what to do with this knowledge, now what to change, now who to tell
trying out a new(ish) art style with glamour shots of Grimnir.. doing visdev for a story iām working on, iām thinking the old man might make an appearanceĀ Ā
a hollow god
itās been almost a full year since my first comic with these twoā>(x)Ā it was really cool looking at how much my art style has changed since then. all of these comics right now are experimental but i might make a zine of these two in the futureĀ

Constant contentment and comfort-seeking are not sorcerous virtues. The treatment in our modern culture is comfort as commodity and entitlement, as something ādeservedā.
The Wise do not ājust want to be comfortableā.
Comfort-seeking leads us away from experiencing the full depth and breadth of what Creation has to offer. It steers us towards a flatter, dull expression of Truth and an acceptance of the ordinary as reality. The spark of magic is begotten through friction, pain and discomfort.
The mystic or sorcerer should seek out the Edges of things, the places where shadows dance and the ineffable Darkness creeps up on the daylight, threatening to drag us under, to the Source of all things, the land of wonder. The danger is not sorted out.
I would say that constant comfort-seeking lacks that sense of wonder for life, for the wholeness expressive in a dynamic experience of being fully present.
There should be gratitude for comfort that has been blessed to us, but it is never a commodity for cunning folk, something we believe can be āearnedā or ādeservedā.
I do not seek to have to always be āhappyā (a word whose older meaning is āfatefulā) and content, or to avoid or banish any negative sensation or experience I come across in my journey. Sometimes I like to sit with the shitty feelings, and experience them; not wallow, but allow them to pass over me and through me. I want to be present for all of it, for inside every experience is a door, from Passion to Wisdom, one of the great Mysteries. Evohe.
