Each Benoit Blanc film takes place in a different season and classic murder mystery setting.
Knives Out: Autumn in a country house
Glass Onion: Summer on a private island
Wake up Dead Man: Spring in a small town
So the next film in the cycle needs to be set in winter on a mode of transportation.
my partner brought up a great point on our way home from seeing obsession: everything that bear has in his life is because of women. the house was his grandmothers, the pills were his grandmothers, it seems that he has his job because sarahs dad owns the music store, at the beginning he says he became close to nikki after his aunt died, and hes even sold the initial one wish by a woman working at the metaphysical shop. every single thing he has in his life is from a woman and he STILL cant respect their autonomy.
i know i am late to the obsession train. but let me get this out.
bear isn’t just a coward and pathetic loser as everyone says he is. those words feel to me, so humanising of who he really is. he’s as much of a predator as the man who drugs a woman then assaults her, as much of a predator as a man who tortures his SA victims.
i don’t know if people want to have this conversation, but this man raped nikki. he assaulted her. he tortured her. that’s not my definition of a pathetic loser. at least, just a pathetic loser. i mean, It was clear everything he did with nikki was non-consensual. if not from the first time nikki was at his place and screamed, “what the fuck!” and pushed him back, then clearly when she begged him multiple times to kill her. it was clear he was taking advantage of the situation just as ian told him he looked like and he denied and was taking advantage of the fact that nikki was under the influence of his wish. like this man clearly got off from the power he had over the real nikki. just like all predators.
love the way the director(s) of the movie highlighted this with the ominous music during the sex scene with both of them. clearly, very fucking disturbing.
so yeah, calling him a “pathetic loser” is way humanising than what he actually is.
besides, he’s also dumb as fuck, like, when he went to ian’s place to replace his wish to turn everything back to normal, all he had to say was, “yo, say “i wish nikki was back to normal/loves me the way friends do/everything went back to normal”, then break the stick in the middle.” but he has to blabber the entire existence of the one wish willow and make this entire crazy ass looking speech about how it’s real like mf, you don’t have time.
also the fact that this man knew nikki would quite literally kill for him. (he confirmed it when he asked her “do you really love me more than anyone in the whole world?”), and still went to sarah. never warned the poor soul once that she was practically on nikki’s kill list. this man knew after the entire kiss-the-person-to-your-left fiasco. so i never felt bad for him when he opened sarah’s letter and started screaming (i saw some videos saying “i feel so bad”, with this scene.)
so this man is a predator and a murderer.
details i absolutely loved and feel worth pointing out:
love the fact that usually when a person is covered in blood a normal person would literally do their best to understand and help the situation, but everyone bear meets literally is unfazed by his half bloody hoodie and face, almost like saying that everything is his fault so they have nothing to help him for.
also, love, love, love the attention to the clock ticking in the background. to me it feels like a countdown to bear’s death and a constant reminder to bear that he can never go back until his life is over.
what i loved about Obsession is that I went in knowing basically nothing, other than having watched a trailer, and it framed the movie as "poor guy too shy to admit his feelings makes a wish that turns the girl he loves into a monster" and as the movie went on i kept feeling more and more uncomfortable with his reactions but, naturally thinking i was supposed to be sympathetic to him, i was trying to rationalise his reactions. thinking that maybe he's in denial about what has happened and that's why he keeps pretending everything is fine. that maybe he's too scared to act out in case the monster inside nikki freaks out and tries to kill him. maybe he doesn't tell anyone because he knows noone will believe him.
and then the real nikki speaks to him. and she begs him to kill her. she is so scared. don't wake her up please dont wake her up just kill me. and bear gets angry. he doesn't even apologise. he doesn't care about nikki's true feelings. he WANTS her to be obsessed with him, he just doesn't want her to do it in such an ugly and inconvenient way. he lashes out at her. "What would be so bad? What's so bad about being with me?".
it has never been about her. if it was, bear wouldn't have been satisfied about living with a girl who's only resemblance to nikki was her body. he turned her life into a living hell. in fact, he turned TWO girl's lives into a living hell. because the entity was miserable too. she was created exclusively to love a person who would never love her back. who never cared about her.
and he never once considers how it affected nikki. he gets scared of the entity acting weird and creepy but the moment the real nikki begs him for a shred of sympathy, for just a bit of mercy. he doesn't care. he only cares about the fact she won't reciprocate his feelings. he only cares about how she can satisfy him.
it was the turning point of the movie that made me realise that there was never any justifying his actions. it re-contextualises everything. he was content with nikki's suffering as long as it brought him pleasure. as long as it soothed his ego. as long as it was convenient. and for as much as he talked about being in love with her, all he cared about was her body. the entity was an entirely different girl, all she had was nikki's face and body. if he ever truly loved nikki like he claimed, he would have been deeply disturbed by the personality change. but he never was. he was only ever disturbed by the creepy things specifically. but the palatable changes? the way she talks, the way she expresses herself, what she does in her free time, how she dresses? all of that was gone. different. a whole new person. yet he didn't give a single fuck.
up until that point in the movie, i thought that maybe he was acting weird because this was an extremely abnormal situation that he didn't know how to get out of. that he was scared. that maybe there's an explanation there. but no, there isnt. the only explanation is that bear was the real monster all along.

we’re so lucky that gilgamesh survived and is a banger. can you imagine if we found the oldest written human story ever recorded and it sucked balls.

WOW, the fact that the Russo brothers HATE how taika watiti developed thor’s character in ragnarok really really fucking jumps out in avengers 4!!!
in ragnarok, taika:
cut Thor’s hair
took away his hammer, signifying that Thor was indeed a character beyond the hammer
took out his eye, signifying that Thor was powerful beyond his physical attributes and ready to take on the responsibility as king
put Thor as the underdog in the situation, reminding the audience that Thor is clever and intelligent, not only optimistic and cheerful, and purely brawn
had him meet Valkyrie and earn her loyalty, showing him as a leader ready to right the wrongs of Asgard’s past and encourage his people to a better path
developed his relationship with Loki, reminding the audience that they were still brothers and Thor had great capacity for forgiveness, but wasn’t stupid enough to blindly trust Loki
destroyed Asgard, showing that Thor is ready to take, make, and recover from the big sacrifices and do whatever it takes to keep, care, and protect his people
in avengers 3 and 4, the Russo brothers:
Still thinking about how Loki’s villain arc in the first movie involves him becoming MORE like Thor was at the beginning but this is never really engaged with. Thor as a child and an adult expresses the desire to wipe out the Jötnar. He is open about this and never corrected so it’s presumably an attitude accepted and encouraged by his friends/family/society. Loki DOESN’T want this to happen and finds war neither glorious nor enjoyable (he’s not laughing or having fun when they are forced to fight on Jotunheim, unlike Thor, who seems positively delighted); in fact he’s willing to scheme against his family in order to delay Thor’s coronation because he believes it necessary in order to prevent a war.
Only after shocking betrayals and revelations cause him to have a breakdown and become suicidal does Loki decide to try to destroy Jotunheim. His whole villainous turn involves him trying to do the thing that Thor wanted to do from the beginning of the movie (and that presumably most of Asgardian society would still support since nobody reacted with horror or even mild censure when Thor talked eagerly about destroying the frost giants or took pleasure in killing dozens of them).
