[the scene: it is 6:15 AM. most of my innocent friends are asleep. I am speaking into the void to document this before I forget it, regardless of the feelings of anyone who clicks into this mess]

me: SO I JUST WOKE UP AND I NEED YOU ALL TO KNOW THIS HAPPENED LAST NIGHT --

my brain: what about a traditional, really graphic "all your teeth are coming out" nightmare? is that good? do we like that? me, presumably: oh, no, we don't like that! that's not good for us! my brain: shit my brain: okay wait no we've got this my brain: so you're in a dentistry themed anime. you're a freshman bio major in undergrad who hopes to someday be a dental student wannabe working in reception as a summer job/internship, right my brain: all the partners are young hotshots under the fearless leader senior partner who's a GILF my brain: also this all starts happening when the whole practice is doing professional development at a dental conference, they let you come as enrichment my brain: the senpai of the junior partners is this incredibly ambitious and also hot professional in her 30s who struggles to balance her genuine love of teeth with her rabid competitive spirit. her rivalry with her equally hot but way more darkly cutthroat rival at her mentor's rival's practice spurs her to both be better and worse versions of herself my brain: Junior Partner Senpai is racked. Junior Partner Senpai's Rival is also racked and has a scar over one eye from a drill accident where she went Too Far my brain: it doesn't help that Junior Partner Senpai's immediate kouhai at GILF Practice is her best friend who was one year behind her in dental school, and they swore they'd make each other better at teeth forever. but he's focused more on research than patient practice and she feels angry that he's lost his way. she hasn't accepted that he's doing his best in a different direction my brain: there's a corrupt pharmaceutical sales subplot that Junior Partner Senpai and her super hot Junior Partner Senpai's Rival engage with on a surface level to argue about ethics. but when the Senior Partner GILF and her rival (he is also a grizzled GILF of the other persuasion) engage with it, you see that they're doing so at a deeper level of industry structural criticism, and they may well be ultimately more in sympathy with each other than their rivalry leads you to believe my brain: obviously the sexual tension for all these key relationships is off the charts my brain: anyway, they're doing dental procedures on volunteers in an amphitheater with commentary in real time at this dental conference, because the industry has brought that back from historical medicine, but because everyone is there, now it feels competitive/tournament lite my brain: and what could be better than an arc finisher where they have to rescue their cutest little reception kouhai from "all their teeth are coming out?" my brain: all your teeth are still falling out btw it's really graphic my brain: remember, the tagline of the national dental conference tournament arc, which you also say out loud in character, is "I mean, if I'm going to have a dental emergency… [switch camera angle] …there's no place I'd rather be."

my brain: my brain: is that good?? do we like the 'all your teeth are crumbling out of your mouth' dream now????

I've mostly forgotten them all now that I've woken up, obviously, but with any luck they'll reform the corrupt interplay between the dental instruments industry and the insurers over in that universe. they were working very hard and feeling a lot of feelings about it

I'm trying to work out the timeline for Dunn consuming Characteristics and this man is just so bad at Digesting and advancing (even without Consuming).

Facts: He has been a Beyonder for 15 years.

• ~3 years as Sleepless • ~9 years as Midnight Poet • 2 years as a Nightmare (Note: I'm not sure if the length of time for Sleepless and Midnight Poet were stated, I'm only basing his time at Sleepless on the 3-year advancement rule for Nighthawks. He could have stayed at Sleepless for much longer and had a shorter spot through Poet. But maybe he's just not the type that would burn the midnight oil on creative works, hence stalling.)

• 5 Years ago, Daly joined the Nighthawks and that's when she and Dunn figured out the Indestructibility of Beyonder Characteristics rule.

• By this time, Dunn probably stalled at Midnight Poet for at least 6 years.

• 5 years ago is also when Adelaide sacrificed himself in some accident/incident, and Dunn was there to consume his characteristics. So, assuming Adelaide was the first, Hitte and Dwayne were consumed in short order within the next 5 years.

• Whatever the case, it lit a fire under his ass and he got through digesting enough of the Characteristics/potion to finally advance to Nightmare. My head canon is it involved his dreams during the years before Seq 7 dovetailing into doing things that helped quickly digest Midnight Poet.

• If the director's comments on episode 9 of the Donghua is any indication, Dunn's also good at writing eulogies 😢
