The White King And The Crimson Dreamer
Strange dreams were dreamt, and even stranger things were seen.
Walking through a corridor of mirrors, the normally sharp-tongued, and hot-headed Elesis was all docile confusion as she gazed upon her reflections. Tall and skinny, squat and fat, upside down, side to side, and every other distortion you could think of. She took a deep breath, placing a hand against a mirrorâs cool, smooth surface.
I really shouldnât have eaten all that food before going to bed⌠she thought, taking a deep breath. Her eyelids fluttered as her nostrils flared. She bowed her head, long crimson locks obscuring her facial features. How to get out of here? She scanned the corridor, narrowing her eyes as she looked for a door, or a crack, or something.
She shook her head, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. Stuck, in a mirrored corridor, with no doors. At least it was a dream. Still, trapped in a hall for a good few hours until she finally woke up? She chuckled, sinking down to the floor and resting her chin on her knees.
Well, at least this dream wasnât worse. She could be stuck in the hall with Add, her friend- Eveâs- creeper; or Lu, the loli hussy whom her now-ex boyfriend, Ciel, had cheated on her with. Her and Luâs last encounter had ended with an epic sharpie battle that had ended with numerous casualties: a few mustaches, some random lines, and a whole lot of dots.
She didnât believe Cielâs apology two days later. If he was genuinely sorry, he wouldnât have accepted Luâs offer of employment.
She rolled onto her side, staring at the distorted reflections that stared back at her. She looked away, only to be greeted with another set of mirrors. Damn mirrors. Why couldnât this dream have included a sword, or something that she could shatter the mirrors with? It wasnât as if her image displeased her. She was pretty, beautiful even. Pale, heart-shaped face, keen amber eyes tinted red. Her hair was soft like silk and shone like satin, and she was leggy and graceful.
Still, when she wanted to stare off into the distance and muse about the events taking place in her life, she didnât want to see someone staring back at her. Even if that someone was herself. Save the mirrors for those narcissistic orfici, such as Add, or Lu.
She tugged on the sleeves of her black nightshirt, wishing she had a watch. Or for a monster to start chasing her, or for someone to pop out of nowhere and at least give her someone to talk to. Her eyelids were heavy, and her mind was fuzzy. The promise of sleep was singing to her, lulling her to fall away from her body into its comforting embrace.
Falling asleep inside a dream, while you were technically asleep?
A thin smile twisted the corners of her lips. Why not?
A lucid noise, like the shattering of a champagne glass, echoed off the walls. She bolted upright, eyes wide.
A fine hairline crack had appeared in the floor, and was now blooming, stretching its spindly limbs towards the ceiling, creeping up the walls. She jerked her head back, taking a step away from the crack.
I take my wish back, universe! thought Elesis. I was just about to take a nap! She threw an arm out behind her as the floor, with a deafening boom, shattered. The room exploded, shards of glass raining down upon her. They stung her, bit her cheeks and hands, snagged her nightclothes with their sharp edges.
She fell down, into the bottomless void. Â
