The dog heard him coming before I did. She woke out of a deep sleep on the rug and was completely alert and whining at the door. I knew this day was coming, but I hoped…
I would have had a few more days with the dog I had found loose on the street. Heaving a sigh, I was off the couch and opening the door before this man I had never met before could knock.
“Paul?” I ask before the look of surprise could fade from his face. And what a face, too. Strong jaw under a well groomed red beard that was just starting to show grey. Full red lips, high cheek bones, sparkling hazel eyes, and pale skin dusted with freckles.
“You are literally a life saver,” Paul said as he squatted down to lavish attention on the fluffy white charmer that I had started dreaming of adopting.
“I’m glad I saw her when I did. And that I saw your posters.” I took the opportunity to admire Paul’s broad shoulders, thick arms and thighs; all of which were seriously straining at the material of his scrubs.
Paul looked up at me with a crooked grin and said, “how can I repay you?”
Seeing him at that angle, almost on his knees looking up into my face, caused a wave of desire to walk over me. “No repayment necessary. Though if you need a dog walker, I work from home” I say, trying to push aside my reaction to the ginger vision in front of me. Paul stood up, giving me the opportunity to appreciate how his scrubs bulged in other places.
“That sounds a lot like you doing me another favour,” Paul said. “How about you invite me in and we can work something out.”
