A color print of the cover art is pasted onto the brown cloth binding. In 1946, Doubleday & Co. released a new edition of the well-known historian Francis Parkman’s The Oregon Trail (originally published in 1847). This new edition was illustrated by the famous muralist, Thomas Hart Benton, who gained notoriety in the thirties with five mural projects completed for the Works Progress Administration. He was at the forefront of the Regionalist art movement, artists who eschewed urban life for the rural. The Regionalists painted scenes of everyday people engaged in life in the American heartland.
