Today I watched the entirety of the episode 9 leak whether it’s real or not (although it most likely is) I think the ending gave us more gaps in the series than it did fill any. But what I didn’t expect was finding myself to believe that Jax actually could be transgender specifically transfem. I was actually never opposed to the idea of Jax being transgender I just never looked into it deep enough until it was right in my face.

I think the theory that Jax is transgender is more believable than it was before. The scene where Pomni had opened doors inside what seemed to be (or what I believe to be) his mind-space had changed how I viewed Jax as a character entirely. The episode doesn’t explain what these rooms are supposed to represent but I feel as if the imagery that was used feels way too specific to just be ignored. But first I will go through a rundown of other scenes which can help strengthen this theory and why people speculate it to begin with.

—THINGS THAT WERE PREVIOUSLY HINTED AT

The show has been hinting at Jax’s gender insecurity issues since episode 5. In this episode there is a scene where Gangle calls a vote to put Jax in a maid dress the vote goes through and Jax is then popped into a maid dress magically. At first I’m sure most people had assumed the scene was just a gag since Gangle is into anime and the maid dress thing is common and popular in anime. But Zooble says something to Jax that makes him increasingly more angry and uncomfortable ‘I thought you’d be into this?’ Jax then gets defensive almost as if the joke or Zooble’s teasing hit something that was more personal than Jax would like to admit. It is also worth mentioning that Zooble also says how this is the first time they had seen Jax get so upset about something. To me, it feels less like ‘haha Jax is in a dress and he is a boy’ and more like Jax is uncomfortable because femininity is something he has tried to reject or hide in his life and I think in that very moment he was faced with a situation that forces him to wear something that is inherently feminine and he can’t do anything about it.

Previously Gooseworx has answered questions which were mainly about Jax specifically one had asked about why Jax was so upset about being in the maid dress.

Gooseworx replies with: ‘He wasn't ready to ask these questions about himself.’

I am aware that Goose does joke around online especially about the amazing digital circus so I’m not saying these specific tweets are the reason why this theory is canon. But now combined with what we see in episode 5 and with what we know happens in episode 9 it genuinely feels like Jax’s internal gender-related conflict has been a plan since day one.

And this is where I get more into why episode 9 strengthens the theory entirely.

—GANGLE FANTASY? + EPISODE 9

As I had described before there was a scene Pomni had opened doors which were in Jax’s mind-space. One of these doors led to a “fantasy” of Jax’s where Zooble had abstracted and Gangle was taking control of what they were going to do for Zooble’s funeral. Jax had shown up in a maid dress and Gangle essentially called him out describing his actions as ‘disrespectful’ to Zooble. Jax doesn’t respond with anger or denial but instead he started flirting with her teasing her and saying things like ‘Don’t act like you’re not into this’ and getting into her personal space. Gangle responds by blushing and that is when Jax gives her a key to his room which reads as a personal invitation or sexual gesture.

The important thing here is to remember this is a fantasy that is in Jax’s mind and it is not an actual event that had happened previously. But even as a fantasy it’s coming from the perspective of jax or at least something that has been reflected in his head.

What stood out to me is that Jax is always shown bullying Gangle THE most. He threatens to show her private things or tell people stuff that will embarrass her and the things he threatens is mostly sexual stuff she is into like drawing anime drawings or ‘doing stuff’ to an anime figure. So seeing a fantasy where he suddenly flips into this idea of flirting with her in a scenario where he’s in a maid dress feels intentional as if he has a fixation with Gangle that is expressed externally in a toxic way and it can also connect back to Zooble and Gangles relationship and them being close as well as Jax being hostile towards Zooble. There is also a minor detail that is included in another part of the episode where Jax had supposedly gave Gangle her name implying an earlier connection between the two. If he did have some obsession with Gangle the dynamic of Zooble and Jax hating eachother would make more sense because Jax had an implied previous friendship with Gangle until Zooble had joined the circus.

And the maid dress thing again feels less like a gag because they’re using it again so now it is a recurring thing the show keeps using in relation to Jax’s character.

—INTERNALIZED TRANSPHOBIA + WHY HE REACTS TO ALL WOMEN THE SAME

As the episode moves on and we get to one of the last scenes with Jax we actually see his memories or past interactions with characters who are now abstracted. Of course I am referring to Ribbit and Kaufmo the entire show has lead up to the tension and mystery of ‘what happened between them?’ And we get a few answers because of the memories they decided to show.

In this memory, Jax is shown to be having a deep personal conversation with Ribbit. These memories are the only real look we get at Ribbits character unfortunately and I wish we got more because I’d love to do a deep dive on her perspective as well but from what we see it seems like they were very close. Jax starts talking to her about something that was deeply personal and traumatic. Jax apologizes because he feels like he said too much, like he did something wrong. He immediately feels a deep shame within himself.

Ribbit responds by taking her bow tie off and placing it on Jax’s head like a bow and says ‘your secret is safe with me.’

It probably just is meant to be just her saying she won’t tell anyone, but the bow thing really stuck with me and stood out to me as something different. Something being hinted at. At first, Jax tenses up, blushes, and slowly relaxes once he feels safe again. It seems to be pretty quiet and comfortable between the two before the silence is broken by Kaufmo who knocks on the door. Jax then immediately freaks out taking the bow off his head and throwing it to the ground. He tries to stop Kaufmo from coming in saying ‘we are busy!’

After that Jax basically tells Ribbit she can’t tell anyone what they talked about. He completely distances himself from Ribbit acting as if they were never close and refusing to team up with her during adventures and teams up with Kaufmo instead. It eventually leads up to an argument that happens on the snowy hill we see referenced in episode 7. Thats all we see of the two until Ribbit abstracts which I assume is from the feeling of being ignored and alone.

This memory feels important to the theory overall it kind of gives the idea that Jax is most at ease when he is vulnerable around women but immediately panics when he feels like he’s exposed too much of himself. This could also explain why he reacted so strongly when Pomni and him began to get close in episode 6 so much so that Pomni hugged him in excitement he immediately gets defensive and pushes her off. He is saying ‘we are not friends. This place isn’t serious. There’s no reason for me to get close to you. Therefore I’m not vulnerable.’

It almost feels like he’s trying to hide the fact that he is comfortable when he lets his guard down around women but he’s worried about what that means or says about him.

Taken all together it doesn’t confirm anything but it definitely makes the transfem interpretation of his character feel more supported than it did earlier in the series.
