Lorcan Defense Squad 2k16
because Iâm seeing a lot of Lorcan hate and I donât understand it because in my eyes Lorcan is one of the most tragic characters in the entire books.
So a lot of the hate is based on the fact that he is responsible for Aelinâs capture/calling Maeve and everyone (fandom & characters in the book) blame him for it. I understand it, however, think about it.
Fenrys says at one point that what fae males are meant to do is â[âŚ]protect, serve, cherish.â At one point Aelin orders Rowan do get her a glass of water, because he told her that fae males need to feel useful, even if that is achieved by stupid/ridiculous tasks.Â
âThe girl had no idea that for the past five centuries, promises were the only currency he really traded inâ. Basically Lorcan has done a lot of horrible stuff. He knows it, Rowan knows it, everyone knows it. He has nothing but promises left and he knows it. He knows that if he breaks that promise thereâll be nothing left of him. In fact, that one last moral is more important to him than the blood oath, the only thing he ever wanted.Â
The tragic part is that the promise he made Elide was so important to him that he betrayed the blood oath and the Queen heâs been sworn to for centuries.
I donât think he really did it for Elide (I mean he did, but not completely). He did it for himself. Because he knew that if he broke that promise, thereâd be nothing left of him. That after all the horrible things he has done, there was still promises, something to keep him human. But if he broke that promise, there was nothing left for him/of him.Â
Sidenote: Lorcan considered Rowan a friend. A friend he got whipped for. A friend that simply left him, even though they were âboundâ by the blood oath. Rowan found a way out and was gone, while Lorcan had risked everything to come to Rowanâs rescue and then later payed for it. So maybe he also did not want to loose someone else he cared about.Â
Sidenote II: Elide offered him a place in Perranth, she basically makes him a promise in return (Basically Rowan and the blood oath) and he is risking everything for someone he considers a âfriendâ (Cadre to the rescue). So maybe Maeve/blood oath doesnât mean as much to him as he/we think. Maybe he fools himself into thinking about how important, honorable the oath is in order to not think about what a weakness his friends are to him, because it always gets him in trouble.
