What kills me most about the song of Achilles is that despite what he said as a teenager, Patroclus probably could have survived Achilles dying. He had years to prepare for it as well as tons of people who loved him and cared about him and would have rallied together to help him get through it. It wouldn’t have been easy but he would have had Briseis and Automedon and all the soldiers he’d helped who befriended him, and the men in the medical tent. He would have been able to push through and still find reasons to live with lots of people to help him. But Achilles never had that. Not only did he never prepare for losing Patroclus, he had no one else but Patroclus. He wasn’t friends with the other soldiers, he wasn’t friends with the other kings, Briseis obviously preferred Patroclus. He probably didn’t see any point in befriending more people when he was just going to die soon anyway. And why did he need anyone else? He had a companion, and a best friend, and a lover, and an adviser, all in one. He probably figured that’s all he needed. So when Patroclus dies, he is 100% alone. He has no friends, no one who cares about him and loves him unconditionally, no one to help keep him busy and distracted, or tell him to keep going because they’ll be together again one day. It’s no wonder he loses it; he had one person who could hold him together and that person was dead.
