most cis people who are aware of butler's theory of the performative nature of gender do not understand the linguistic basis of butler's argument ("performative" in this sense refers to forms of communicative interaction which create social reality rather than simply describing it, e.g. entering a contract) and will assume "performative" implies consciously memorizing and performing a role.
essentially, the misunderstanding is that "performative" is synonymous with "performance." what butler is saying is that what we think of as gender is a form of social reality that is continuously, collectively created (constructed and reproduced) within social context, rather than being a static innate category that exists outside of historically contingent social relations.
combining this misunderstanding with the common cis belief in trans artificiality leads to a reactionary reading of the theory as basically justifying their preexisting belief of "trans people are just pretending." so, 99.9% of the time when a cis person is talking about gender as "performance" it tips me off that they need to unpack some transphobia.
however, occasionally a cis person has this sort of misunderstanding about the term "performative" but applies it to themself (and all cis people), instead of to trans people, and in doing so articulates a sentiment like "this is so true, all us cis people are basically just going through the motions and putting on a show for other cis people."
& for these people, I immediately place them in a secret category that exists in my head for "egg and/or comrade"
