I heard an interview, canāt remember the psychologist, but he was explaining this idea and encouraging people to stop and take a deep breath and literally drink in small moments like youāre a dryass plant when something is ever satisfactory, positive, mildly successful, randomly joyful so your brain can code and integrate that experience because our natural lizard brain will quickly tape over it with mostly unnecessary negative survival shit. Sounds dumb and dorky but sometimes I remember this when Iām feeling good about a moment because our cave brains are still catching up with modern life without sabertooths. I like that itās not just a pollyanna gosh just be more positive thing but more of a legit brain wiring phenomenon can be gradually hacked through small behavioral changes.

The best advice Iāve ever received about managing my depression/anxiety/adhd is that disability exists in the context of the environment. Accommodations are not about changing yourself to work in your environment ā itās about changing your environment to better work for you.
So yeah, get a tiny trash can and put it by your door. Store your towels in your bathroom so you can immediately change them when they smell funny. Hang a basket by your door for your gloves and earbuds. Leave a box of cliff bars by your door so you never leave without breakfast. Change your environment and change your life!

Everything Is AWFUL and Iām Not Okay: Questions to Ask Before Giving Up on Yourself
Are you hydrated?Ā
If not, have a glass of water. Dehydration can mimic or increase feelings associated with anxiety and a well hydrated brain functions optimally. Avoid excess caffeine.Ā
Have you eaten in the past three hours?Ā
Donāt be a victim of hanger! Get some foodāsomething with protein, not just simple carbs or high-fat. Nuts, hummus, and veggies are great options to feed your studying brain. Keep healthy snacks within reach to avoid mindlessly chowing down on sweets.Ā
Have you stretched your legs in the past day?Ā
If not, do so right now. If you donāt have the energy or time for a run or a trip to the gym, just walk around the block or building. Even minimal exercise preps the mind for learning so that you can focus better and recall things easier, plus itās good to get a change of scenery.Ā
Have you said something nice to someone in the past day?Ā
Do so, whether online or in person. Make it genuine! We bet your study partner would appreciate a compliment.Ā
Have you moved your body to music in the past day?
If not, jog for the length of a song at your favorite tempo, or just dance around your bedroom for the length of an upbeat song (singing along is a bonus)Ā
Have you cuddled a living being in the past two days?
If not, do so. Donāt be afraid to ask for hugs from friends of friendsā pets. Most of them will enjoy the cuddles too; youāre not imposing.Ā

Put on PJs, make yourself cozy in bed with a teddy bear and the sound of falling rain, and close your eyes for fifteen minutes while focusing on breathing deeper with every breath- no electronic screens allowed! Adequate sleep is a necessity for stress management.Ā
Do you feel ineffective?Ā
Pause right now and get something small completed, whether itās responding to an email, loading the dishwasher, or tidying up your room. Good job!
Do you feel unattractive?Ā
Take a darn selfie. Your friends will remind you how great you look. You are always insta-worthy.Ā
Do you feel paralyzed by indecision?
Give yourself ten minutes to sit back and figure out a game plan for the day. If a particular decision or problem is still being a roadblock, simply set it aside for now, and pick something else that seems doable. To any trans women and transfeminine followers of mine, did you know thereās a pretty huge Etsy store which does gaff underwear and swimsuits specifically designed for trans people amongst its products? They go in a pretty decent range of sizes, including sizes for young girls, and while I do not personally know anyone who has used them, thereās a fuckton of positive reviews on the Etsy store. They have a ton of colours to choose from, different fabric choices, the works.
And for once theyāre not marked āfor crossdressersā too, they actually under ātransgenderā, so thatās (depressingly) unusual.
Iām mostly posting this because Iāve seen a lot of younger people recently in particular saying they never knew what gaffs were⦠a lot of people find them WAY MORE comfortable and convenient than tucking, so I would recommend looking into them if youāve never done so before!
And even if you yourself donāt use or need this stuff, do pass this kind of info on to any friends of yours that might, guys! Thereās always like a million more PSAs about transmasc stuff as opposed to transfem stuf tbhā¦

If you live in a climate colder than zone 6ā¦as I doā¦plant them in containers and move the containers into a basement or garage during the winter.Ā
They bloom in fall, and are quite lovely. And also you get saffron.Ā
Can Saffron handle Zone 13?
They grow it in the deserts of the Middle East (with a bit of irrigation.) It can handle the worst heat you can throw at it.Ā
What it does NOT like is wet feet all the time. If the soil is soaking wet too often, it will rot. So if you live somewhere with a lot of rainfall, Iād try raised beds or pots that can be protected from excess rain.Ā
So my Arizonan (Phonecian to be precise) ass should be perfectly fine, then?
Not only fine it would probably love the shit out of your area, so long as you threw it some water now and then.Ā
Seriously, hereās a saffron farm in the desert of Afghanistan, and the saffron is happy as shit there.Ā
Whatās zone 6?
Growing zones are a measure of how cold it gets in a given area in winter, which is a limiting factor in where many things will grow.Ā
Zone 6 means that the minimum expected temperature will not get below -10F.Ā
Here is a gardening zone map of the USA.Ā
Iām in zone 5, supposedly, right on the tip of Iowaās nose where it bumps out into Illinois, but more realistically given our not-uncommon cold snaps here weāre about a zone 4.Ā
So if you live in any of the light green through pink-orange areas, saffron will grow just fine for you on its own in your regular old dirt. It will grow in hotter zones as well, but the continental US only goes up to zone 10 and so most US based companies will advertise plants asĀ ābeing suited for zones 5 through 10ā² even if a plant can take hotter temps.Ā

Second: I canāt speak to most of the US but if youāre on the CO front range and put Saffron in the ground, youāre going to have Saffron forever.Ā Itās literally coming up out of my parentās lawn and has completely overrun a neighborās garden.Ā This is the opposite of a problem.
Third: Bees love it.Ā Honeybees, bumblebees, little bees and big bees.Ā Late-season butterflies and moths love it too.Ā support your local pollinators.
Fourth: Itās worth growing for the sheer, visceral delight of giving your friends that cook a lump of homegrown saffron for free and telling them you grew it yourself and watching them go >:O as they are both tremenously impressed with your ability to do plant magic and enraged by the bullshittery that is the modern agricultural market.
