It's been a few days since chaos started at Caledon. Police officers going around the campus, everyone being tense, it surely is such a time to work here.

Your coworker, Gwen Hunter is in severe trouble. You heard she was caught selling drugs to students. Honestly, you're having a hard time believing this. Gwen is a serious woman, she's devoted to her job and always make sure her students stay safe.

You didn't have the time to have a talk with her yet, but no matter what you'll be on her side. She's always been a sweetheart with you. Back when you started your theatre professor job here, she was the first one to show you around the campus, to talk to you and to give you a friend here.

Today you decide to meet her to discuss. You want to make sure she's alright. She was forced out of the campus by some security officers pretty quickly, not even giving her the time to pack her stuff yet. She's currently not allowed into the campus so you decide you'll meet where she always goes to free her mine, the view is pretty good as well which makes it even better.

When you arrive, she's sitting on a bench. She seems calm, grounded, serious, like she always does.

— Gwen ? You put a hand on her shoulder slowly to avoid startling her.

— Oh, hi. I'm glad to see someone from Caledon who's not looking at me like I'm a criminal. She says sarcastically.

— Should I ? You laugh.

— Up to you, one more, one less, you know.

— I'm sorry this happened. I really am.

— I don't even know how I'm supposed to defend myself you know. I'm so confused. That surveillance footage looks just like me. I don't know who did that nor why, but that's pretty fucked up, right?

You nod.

— Gwen you got this, you know you did nothing wrong, you got tricked, it's unfair but it's not your fault. If this can help in any type of way, I'll stay on your side. If they ask me anything about you, I'll tell them how much of a pleasure it is to work by your side and how professional you are.

She smiles slightly.

— I'm taking all the help right now, thank you, I appreciate it.

The weeks go by at Caledon and things seem to slowly get better. Just like you thought, an officer came up to you to discuss about Gwen, about what kind of person she is, how implied is she in her teacher role and if you had noticed any weird behavior from her those last few months. Just like you told Gwen, you stood up for her, mentioned how dedicated she is, how serious she is when it comes to work and her students, how reliable she always is etc.

As you're about to enter your own office to do some paper work, a hand lands on your shoulder.

— Look who's back! Gwen says, the enthusiasm obvious in her tone.

— Gwen! I'm glad!

— Thank you for what you said to the officer.

— You don't have to thank me, I said nothing but the truth.

— Still, not that many people would have be so insistent on their coworker's qualities to save them from getting definitely fired you know.

— Guess I'm the kind of coworker everybody wants, hm? You say jokingly.

— Trust me, you are. She says as she draws away to join her own office, leaving you quite flustered by those last few words.

it’s not like you were much of an over achiever—not too much anyway. but the responses on your work was tearing you apart. studying english wasn’t for the weak, especially when your professors were sticklers for everything! on top of your own personal insecurities getting the best of you.

but there was one professor you knew that you could go to when everything became too much. when your thoughts caved in your genius brain—making all of your actions and existence a problem.

professor gwen hunter… she was more of a mentor than a professor to you; or potentially, even more than that. you were still unsure—that past meet-up at the coffee shop was rather intimate; barely any coursework was discussed just personal lives, dating histories, and whatnot.

you knocked on her door, adjusting the bag on your shoulder. it was already cracked, but you preferred not to startle her. “professor hunter,” pushing open the door, you exposed yourself.

she turned around, leaning back in her chair, coolly. that’s what you admired about her. gwen didn’t have this uptight demeanor that most professors possessed. “what did i tell you about calling me professor hunter? it makes things weird.”

you just couldn’t get anything right, huh?

“please, gwen is fine. go ahead and shut the door behind you.”

listening to her words, you shut the door, sighing. you cowered within yourself, hiding beneath your clothes—if that was even possible. “what’s up? you seem unlike yourself…” her eyes gave you a once over, examining you.

you sling your bag onto the chair across from her before you plopped down. “my professors have been driving me up the fucking wall!” you complained, pinching the bridge of your nose. “so, in short… i feel like shit.” a dry chuckle fell from your lips.

“we’ve talked about this before. you’re a great writer—hell, you’re one of the best in your graduate class.”

“gwen, that’s only half the problem!” your hand slapped against your leg, as you leaned forward. “it’s not just about my writing anymore… it’s everything.” you pouted, shoving your face into your hands. gwen pressed her lips into a line, before standing up to her feet.

she walked over to her keurig, popping in an herbal tea capsule just for you. “i feel like i can barely show my face around this campus— it’s like everyone is staring at me.”

gwen chortled, leaning her lower back against the counter. “why wouldn’t they stare at you? you’re pretty easy on the eyes— i’m sure they would wanna stare.”

you narrowed your eyes, sucking your teeth. “yeah, right.”

“you think i’m joking?” she meandered toward you, crouching in front of your chair. she smelled of eucalyptus with a hint of cannabis—a small, small hint. “well, i’m not a joker.”

“you kind of are…”

“not in this context. context is very important, y/n.” one of her hands firmly was placed on your thigh.

a snicker finally erupted from your chest. “don’t i know it.”

her dark brown eyes bored into yours, comfortingly. her thumb caressing your thigh over your jeans. “you’re one of the most beautiful, smartest, funniest—“

“okay—“

“ah, ah, let me finish, now.” she wiggled her index finger. “like i was saying… the most beautiful, smartest, funniest, and talented woman i have ever met.” gwen enunciated every adjective like she were casting a spell—spoken with so much diction. “if you’re having some issues with your work, let me take a look at ‘em. it’s the writing department; we’re ridden with assholes.”

you chuckled, weakly, eyeing her stoic features. she was rarely ever this kind to her other mentees. somehow you maneuvered yourself into another lane—a special lane. “thanks, gwen…”

“why don’t we do it over dinner? at my place?”

“d-dinner? you wanna have dinner with me?”

she cracked a charming smile. “well, yeah, that was me asking you to dinner.”

inhaling, deeply, you nod before the words left your lips. “uh, yeah— i would love to have dinner with you.” a real smile spread on your face, matching the same one gwen sported, confidently.
