Hi! I hope you have a good day:) Could you do Kai x reader who has secret crush, but there's a misunderstanding and reader thinks Kai likes Skylor?(In this scenario Skylor might be just friend of Kai or his ex)
Hi! Thanks so much for the request!!
I did see your additional request about possibly adding Wyldfyre into the fic as well, but I’ve only seen up until season 7 of Ninjago so I wouldn’t know any plot or how to write her or anything 🥀 I hope this is still to par though!
Paring: Kai Smith x Reader
Set During: Wu's Tea, after season 6 and Day of The Departed

Working at Steeper Wisdom was an… experience, to say the least.
You had been hired practically on the spot, by a guy dressed in blue who seemed very eager that someone was offering to work there. You had needed a part-time job to help pay for school, and the new tea shop seemed like a good option.
Despite the recent “Ninja craze” that had swept Ninjago City, the tea shop wasn’t exactly well-known. Most days were slow, especially in the evenings. Though, you had expected as much.
What you hadn’t expected was how much fun work could be. You’d worked in retail and in food before, but working with the ninja was all around a great time. On slow days, they often goofed around in the back or experimented with Wu’s “untested” teas. You had gotten to know the ninja well; they were all pretty friendly and very easy to hang around. Sure they dragged you into trouble with Wu sometimes, but he never had the heart to scold you.
You often got paired to work with Jay, Lloyd or Kai — The three who got into the most trouble. Wu thought it would be good for you to "keep an eye on them".
You usually just let them do whatever they wanted, really, as long as nothing was being broken or customers were being disturbed.
That evening was slower, as most weeknights were. You had showed up about an hour and a half ago, helped Jay stock the back a little and had since been sitting behind the register scrolling through your phone.
Today's shift you were with Jay and Kai — Though Kai had been in and out of the shop, checking his hair in the bathroom and constantly texting. He got restless sometimes, you were aware, but this seemed a little different.
Jay had been busy playing Clash Royale at max volume in the back for the past hour. Typical. You wouldn't get on his back about it. It was slow, anyway.
You were scrolling through your Instagram feed, your thoughts elsewhere as you leaned your elbow against the counter. Your head was a bit foggy, as you had had school earlier that day.
You all but jumped as Kai's voice met your ears.
"What'cha looking at?" He asked, leaning over your phone to get a better look at the cat reels playing on screen.
Your head shot up at his question. You hadn't even noticed him walk up.
"Just- uh- instagram." You answered quickly.
He smiled a little at you and cocked his eyebrow. "Jumpy much?" He teased, giving you a light poke in the side.
You eased a little at his jab, and you exhaled a weak laugh. "Just tired."
He nodded and leaned against the counter behind him, trying to look nonchalant. "You had class today?" He asked.
You nodded back and heaved a sigh. "Yeah. I forgot we had homework due this morning so I was up late doing it."
Kai picked at his lips with his teeth. "That sucks. I hope you get a good grade though." He flashed you a good-natured smile.
"Yeah, I hope I do." You answered.
A short silence fell between the two of you. Kai was absentmindedly picking at his nails, his hair falling into his eyes a bit. You wondered what it looked like without all the product and blowdrying.
Your eyes trailed over his outfit for a moment, admiring his casual wear. He had on his classic red, zip-up hoodie, one shoulder slipping slightly. He wore a plain white shirt and black jeans underneath. For his shoes, he always wore whatever was hot in Ninjago City. They tended to be the most expensive part of his outfit.
He glanced up from his nails and caught your eye. He gave you that signature smirk and ran a hand through his hair. "Like what you see?" He asked, clearly trying to tease you.
You felt a heat rise to your cheeks but you quickly pushed it down. "Please," You said in an easy tone, "You're not that special." But he really was, in fact, "that special".
He scoffed and clapped a hand over his heart. "Ouch!" He said, looking at you through the corner of his eye. It made your stomach do flips.
"Hey, somebody has to make sure you don't get a big head." You teased.
He shook his head, his smile turning genuine. "You don't hafta be rude about it." He said.
You were about to retaliate, when his phone suddenly buzzed and he fished it out of his pocket. He typed out a quick message before slipping it back into his pocket.
He let out a long, almost dramatic sigh and stretched his arms above his head, most likely for show.
"Man, this place is so boring on weekdays." He said, lifting himself so he could sit on the counter.
"Yeah, tell me about it." Jay called from the back over the obnoxious sound of his game.
Kai scoffed. He fidgeted with the zipper on his hoodie for a moment, seemingly thinking about something. It was rare to see him lost in thought for more than five seconds.
You glanced down at your phone again for a moment before Kai spoke up.
"So, any big plans tonight?" He asked.
You looked up at him and smiled. "Just more homework." You answered. "Maybe some ramen if I'm feeling adventurous." You added.
"Sounds riveting." He chuckled. The sound made your heart flutter.
Kai's phone buzzed again in his pocket, making a sound against the counter. He grumbled and pulled it out, once again typing a quick text before looking back up at you.
"Hey, are you alright if I head out for a bit? I want to meet up with a friend." He asked, though he wasn't really asking. He knew you would say yes, anyway.
You took a moment to register his question before nodding quickly. "Yeah, yeah, that's fine." You said.
He smiled once more. "Awesome." He said, zipping up his hoodie a bit. It was beginning to get chillier in the evenings that time of year.
"...Who are you gonna meet up with?" You asked, though you had a good idea who he was going to see.
"Ah- Just Skylor. You know her, right?"
"Uh- yeah. Yeah, she came in a couple weeks ago." You nodded, though your face fell a little.
Kai nodded. "Right." He said. He stretched again, this time not really for show.
"...She's nice." You offered, examining his face and trying gauge how he felt about her.
His eyebrows raised and he nodded. "Yeah! Yeah, she's great." He said quickly. "Anyway, I just wanted to... catch up with her, y'know? See how she's doing." He said, looking a bit distant. You got the odd feeling that he wasn't telling the whole truth.
"Right, yeah, that's fine." You reassured him.
You could never tell how Kai really felt about Skylor. You had picked up bits and pieces about their relationship from the other ninja. It seemed they had dated a while back, or least had thought about dating each other, but it hadn't really gone anywhere. You were always worried he still liked her. She was super cool and nice and pretty. Why wouldn't he want to get back together with her? The thought made your stomach hurt.
"Cool." Kai said, pulling you from your thoughts. "You sure you'll be okay with him?" He prodded jokingly, his voice lowering as he looked in Jay's direction.
You laughed softly. "Yeah, I'll be fine. You go have fun."
"Okay. I'll be back before closing." Kai said, hopping off of the counter. He fixed his hair a little and zipped up his jacket the rest of the way. "See ya." He said as he made his way out the door, once again flashing you that signature smile.
"Bye!" You called after him.
Kai left the shop, letting in a gust of cold air behind him. Once the door was closed, the shop fell into silence, save for Jay's stupidly loud game.
"Did Kai leave?" Jay called from the back.
"Yeah." You said, your voice flat.
Jay came out of the back, still clutching his phone in his hands as he tapped at the screen. "Again? He just saw her like, two days ago." He said, now leaning on the counter where Kai had just been.
"Yeah." He said, sticking his tongue out of the corner of his mouth, his eyes fixed on the screen. "Aw, dammit." He mumbled to himself, his brow set.
You looked at your shoes and thought for a moment. "Do you know if he still likes her?" You asked quietly.
"Uh.. yeah." Jay answered absently, clearly not listening.
Jay only hummed in response, pursing his lips. He was quiet for a moment, grumbling as he frantically tapped at his phone. He got increasingly stressed for a short minute before he threw his hands in the air. "Aw, come on!" He huffed and shoved his phone in his back pocket, crossing his arms. He had lost his game. "What were you saying?"
"I was just... y'know, wondering if you know if Kai still likes Skylor." You said, looking a bit defeated.
Jay eyed you a moment, his brow creasing. "I dunno." He answered. "I mean, yeah he used to like her, but... he doesn't really make goo goo eyes at her anymore, I guess."
"Oh, okay." You said, your face falling a bit more. Jay's words did little to comfort you.
Jay looked you over, the gears in his head turning. He was a bit dense, but it didn't take a genius to put two and two together.
"I don't really think she likes him, anyway." Jay continued.
This helped a little. "Why not?"
"I think he scares her or something." He said with a little laugh.
"Sounds like someone I know." You quipped. You never lost your humor, even when feeling a bit down.
"Hey, c'mon, Nya likes me just fine!" He said with a little smile. "...Most of the time."
You scoffed good-naturedly. "Sure."
"Whatever." He said, rolling his eyes for dramatic effect. "Anyway, if it makes you feel any better, Kai gets weird whenever he's around you more than Skylor."
You looked up at Jay, trying to tell if he was joking or not. "What d'you mean?"
"You know, like he gets all goofy and flirty and stuff." He said.
You thought he was just like that, honestly. He had a pretty overly-confident personality, after all.
"He flirts with customers sometimes, though." You said, giving a voice to the nagging doubt inside your head.
Jay shrugged his shoulders. "Yeah, but that's like 'please buy this tea so I can get on with my life' type flirting."
Jay sighed and leaned a bit closer, his voice lowering. "Look, between you and me, he acts all funny around you. He's not that nervous around anybody else." He gave you a little smile and pushed off the counter. "But what do I know?" With that, he stepped away, disappearing into the back.
His words left your brain reelings. Was he really serious, or was he just messing with you? You wouldn't put it past him to pull a prank on you, but then again he did seem oddly sincere.
The rest of the night was slow, as always. You sat by the counter mindlessly tapping your foot on the hardwood floors as you waited for customers to pull you out of your thoughts.
A couple people came in as the night dragged on, and every time the doorbell rang your gaze jerked to the door, secretly hoping it would be Kai.
But Kai didn't show and soon it was closing time, and you secretly thanked the First Spinjitzu Master that you closed at eight on weekdays. You were tired.
You and Jay were just beginning to clean up, him restocking some stuff in the back and wiping down while you swept. The doorbell suddenly caught you by surprise and your head snapped up.
It was Kai, standing there with wind-whipped hair and cheeks flushed from the cold night air.
"Hey, sorry I'm a little late." He said, adjusting his jacket and fixing his hair. He gave you a little smile.
You smiled back at him. "That's alright. How did it go?"
He closed the door behind him and checked his phone for the time, before locking the door. It was 7:58. "It was good. Yeah, I had a good time." He said, a bit distracted.
You nodded and continued sweeping around the dining room. "How's Skylor?"
Kai looked up from his phone quickly. "Skylor? Oh, yeah, she's doing good." He said, and realized that you were sweeping. "Hey, I can take over that if you want." He offered.
You looked to him and gave a little smile. "It's okay, I got it."
"No, that's alright. You go sit down." He said, beginning to take the broom from you. "You've done enough work having to deal with Jay all night." He said in a quieter tone, giving you a wink.
You smiled at the wink but hesitated a moment, before letting him take over. You figured it would ease his conscience from ditching work earlier.
Kai made his way around the dining area, subconsciously moving closer to the counter where you sat, balancing the register.
"Did it pick up at all tonight?" Kai asked as he got a bit closer to the counter, sweeping a bit lazily.
You shrugged one shoulder. "Not much. It stayed pretty slow." You said as you counted up the quarters.
Kai nodded and bit his lip a little, making useless arcs with the broom. "I figured."
"Did you go anywhere fun?" You asked.
Kai looked up and smiled, shaking his head with a little chuckle. "No, I just went to Chen's Noodle House. That's where Skylor works." He said. "I just stop by sometimes to chat, y'know."
You hummed and nodded, closing the register and tapping away at the screen. "Do you two talk a lot?" You asked, trying to be casual.
Kai gave a jerky nod as he swept. "Yeah. Yeah, we do. She gives good advice about stuff."
Kai paused for a second, looking an awful lot like a deer caught in headlights. "Just- uh- life and stuff." He said.
"Life and stuff." You repeated with a smile. "...Does she have a boyfriend?" You asked, surprising yourself with the question.
Kai looked up at you, his expression unreadable, before a thought formed in his head and he smirked. "What, you into her?" He teased.
You let out a laugh, a bright smile on your lips. "No, no I was just wondering." You said.
Kai smiled. "I don't think she does." He answered.
"Oh. She's really pretty." You said, trying to prod him a bit.
"Yeah." Was all he offered for an answer. He wanted to just outright say 'you're really pretty', but he surprisingly had the self-control to hold it in. "Lots of people are pretty." He added, a bit quieter.
You cocked an eyebrow. "What, she's not your type?" You asked.
"No- I mean- I dunno." Kai stumbled over his words, "We used to like each other, but we're just friends now."
"Just friends." You repeated.
"Yeah, it just didn't really work out." He said with a shrug. He really didn't seem too down about it at all.
"...Why not?" You said, then added, "If you don't mind me asking."
He looked up from the dustpan, met your eyes and shrugged again. "We're just... not a great match, I guess. And we broke up on good terms and stuff. We just figured we'd be better as friends."
You nodded. It made sense, but you still felt that doubt nagging at the back of your brain.
"Why the sudden interest?" Kai asked, cocking an eyebrow. "Worried I might get infatuated with her beauty?" He teased.
You scoffed, though he was rather on point. "Just... Wondering about who she is to you, is all."
Kai softened a little. "She's just my friend. Seriously." He said with a little smile.
He finished sweeping up, and put the dustpan and broom back in its place. Jay, who had finished doing the dishes in the back, walked to the other side of the register and clocked out. "I'm outta here." He announced
"Bye Jay!" Kai called from the back door, where he was taking out the trash.
"See you later!" Jay called back. He looked to you, gave you a little, knowing smirk, and waltzed out the door.
You rolled your eyes at him and began clocking out yourself, beginning to pack up your stuff. Kai came back inside from taking out the trash and washed his hands. "It's freezing out there." He said.
"Is it?" You answered, a bit tired of small talk.
"Yeah." He said, and stepped up to where you stood by the register. "Good thing I'm smokin' hot, though. Keeps me nice and toasty." He joked, running a hand through his hair.
You laughed, your shoulders shaking. Kai had a boyish grin on his face at the sound.
"Are you heading home, too?" He asked.
You nodded. "Yeah. I might stop for some food on the way. I'm hungry." You said, and clocked out on the register.
Kai nodded quietly, when he suddenly got an idea. "Hey, you said you wanted some ramen earlier, right?"
You looked up at him. "Yeah, I guess. I might just get fast food though." You said with a shrug.
"...Would you wanna grab something with me?" He offered, his expression turning a bit more sincere. “I’ll pay.”
You smiled at him a moment, feeling that same heat from before rising to your cheeks. Suddenly, the words Jay had planted earlier sprouted in the back of your mind. Maybe Kai did really like you, in some capacity at least.
“Sure. It’s not like anything’s waiting on me at home.” You said, trying to sound casual.
Kai beamed. He felt like fireworks had just gone off in his chest. The real reason he had gone to see Skylor that evening wasn’t necessarily to hang out with her, but to ask her advice on how to impress you. He’d had a crush on you since forever, but he was hopeless at showing how he really felt.
“Except homework.” He quipped, still smiling like an idiot.
“Ugh, don’t remind me.” You said, shaking your head and rolling your eyes. “That’s a problem for future me.”
Kai chuckled slightly. “Poor future you.” He said with a smile. “Anyway, let’s get out of here.” He said, and reached over you to clock out. His hoodie sleeve brushed against your arm and you could smell his cologne. It smelled a little woody and a bit smokey, with a hint of something sweeter.
“Yeah. I’m starving.” You agreed.
His lips quirked upwards a bit. “C’mon,” He said, and took your hand to lead you out. “I have something I wanna talk to you about on the way.”
And with that, he flipped the lights and slid the doors shut behind the two of you.
