CHARACTER HISTORY (tw: su*cidal ideation)
Charms come in threes, and it is no exception that any man with worth bestowed upon them by the divine protects it with three heirs. But, what good is the youngest son other than a game piece set aside for the very worst? Their potential is reserved for when their beloveds meet the grave. Prince Thayer Claremont has always been raised awaiting the very worst for there to be any good in his lifeā and the day he was called into battle, to be put to use, the Claremont name would be exiled for his father's ignorance.
Thayer considers himself no better than baby teeth, something promising only when blood and the tear of skin finally appears. He has always known his worth would only ever be reached in the face of tragedy. Like his ancestors, he found himself preparing for a war he never quite understood even from a young age. There was no need to familiarize himself with good or evil, only to obey orders set by those whose crest he wore on his chest. However, Thayer often found himself questioning right and wrong. Too early was the world painted a dull gray, and he would be taught to bite him tongue until his words sputtered red when he challenged just how good and pure those around him were.
What good was a soldier with a mind, one who did not just hold faith to return home or protect his king but questioned the nature of the realm? So many swore he was meant to be a scholar, but when he began to twist his studies to challenge the way of their world, Thayer was quickly sent to learn how to wield a sword over a pen. He was brought up to be the prince that could be spared for battle, that would be used as the crown's muse across the field in the face of death and threat. Aspirations of teaching, of becoming an integral part of the church, were stripped away.
When his father's ignorance brought death at the healm of the nation, the Claremonts were nearly exiled. Thayer was only 12 years old when he'd been stripped of all his titles, all his glittering and gold. It did not take long for his father to enlist them all into service of the crown indefinitely to atone for his sins.
Thayer brought victory to his name, region, and crown. Honor was bestowed upon him worth retirement once and for all, but he insisted on returning to the fight. He needed the cold damp earth of waiting for battle to sleep, the rattling of his bones only ever ignored when it was masked by the sound of marching. It was easier to ignore his thoughts when death was at his side, like a taunting brother or helpful father, sweeping through every wave of war. This violence, however, would finally serve its consequence to him for trying to use it as sedation to challenging good and evil.
In 1810, when his cousin is finally crowned Queen, her supporters make a demonstration of their exiled prince for their enemies to see. His devotion does not matter, nor does his innocence to being a child during his father's reign. He is attacked directly in battle by his own men and strung up in the middle of the battlefield before morning, his throat slashed as an example to his enemies. His survival was a miracle, the only word any could use when the scar across his throat peers out from his collar. Their cowardice to not strike deep enough was his blessing.
Forced to retire and accept the gild of his honor, Thayer remained restless even after his recovery. He was sent to the seaside to avoid high society and focus on healingā but all he could do was long for the sting the salt air could bring to his wounds. He was often found at the foot of the church of the small village when he snuck away from his chambers avoiding doctorsā some say they caught him begging for death, others in the delirium of opium and wine. Most days were spent at the church trying to make peace with his god because without the battle field, what was he? All he was now was the hollowness of his armor, and without the roar of soldiers, he was left alone with the hammering of his heart. It took time to accept that this was his end, to linger in mundane society and endless symphonies that grew dull.
PRESENT DAYĀ
Despite rumor of his reluctancy to accept his homecoming, Sir Thayer was summoned to London by his cousin, Queen Anne II, as part of a new generation of loyal subjects. Thayer's reputation has made him worthy of a new life that she intends to give him the chance to build, but he also serves another purpose to her. His war tactics can be used in a different light. His manipulation, so carefully crafted to serve him in his recovery, was to be put to use within the castle. The notorious charm of a man not afraid of death would make him not just resilient, but a spectacle that worked like a snake in the grass. His days of bloodshed are over, but he is a soldier at heart. Even wilted, Thayer can still provide the crown with the manipulation of their subjects infatuated with the aroma of a rose or a thorn in their side they can't quite place.
But Thayer's heart lies elsewhere, still buried in the sands of seaside in the hands of a woman he isn't sure knows she has it. Miss Lockridge, driven mad and casted out to the side for similar healing, remains his greatest love. He intends to
TLDR (tw: su*cidal ideation)
Sir Thayer Claremont is the third son of the former king, King Edward Thatcher Claremont. As the third son, he always knew he would be spared as the crown's muse to the forces on the battlefield. At 12, he was exiled with the rest of his family when King Claremont could not handle the war he started and was forced to step down. The family was then pledged to soldiers for the rest of their lives, and Thayer's fate was sealed to perish on the battlefield as a war hero like his father and brothers would. His endeavors of becoming a scholar and vital part of his church were stripped away for questioning the crown at a young age, leaving him to color good and evil both in gray.
Thayer was eventually injured in battle with his throat slit as a demonstration to enemies of Queen Anne II upon her coronation by his own men. He survived and was forced into retirement. He struggled to accept this and could not acclimate to a mundane life as war still haunted his body and soul. Rumors of him seeking out the church to ask their god for death had swept past many, but it was overturned as the madness consuming him during his recovery. He was summoned to court to partake in a new generation of loyal royal subjects the Queen intends to piece together with control over the marriage market. He will also serve as a spy in plain sight, being used as a spectacle and a lapdog as needed.
HEADCANONS (tw: religion, s*lf h*rm mention)
Thayer is graying more than his siblings ever did despite being the youngest boy, with most of the gray his hair along the front of his head.
He has a scar along his throat that often peeks out from the collar of his shirts and jackets. It is slightly raised and one corner is pale, while the rest is still a blushed pink.
During his denial of being retired as a soldier, Thayer had tried to ruin his body as if to "entice death to take him." He ended up inking his body to inflict pain and permanence, a smite against his god, but ultimately accepted his new existence. Since then, he has converted the blasphemy etched into his skin with new markings dedicated to the church and nature itself that he feels he aligns himself to more than his god. These markings are carefully hidden and have only been seen with those he has been intimate with. However, anyone who has enticed him to fencing or humorous wrestling has seen them peek out from underneath the linen of his shirts. They have never been addressed but he hopes to not have to explain them to any noble. They appear like ink transferred from a book page or a letter, splotchy in some areas and then faint. Much of it is made up of his favorite romanticists, as poetry covers much of the lessons he wanted etched into his skin alongside sketches of flowers he has had the students of the Royal Academy of Art have their fun with on intimate nights.
Thayer was far more devoted to his church when he was younger. While he has his current doubts and strayed away from his faith, there is a loyalty to it found in ritual alone to bring him comfort. He follows certain practices for their predictability and routine to silence the uneasiness that overwhelms him from time to time.

CURRENT CONNECTIONS
Miss Cassandra Lockridge: Cassandra's mother is who Thayer believes is the love of his life, both bound to the seaside to find sanity and comfort. Her mother found him at the steps of the church in a delirium brought on by indulgent self medicating and he has loved her ever since. Cassandra is the only one who knows of the affair. He serves as a father figure to her, teaching her to ride when her real father was off seeking nonsensical solutions to her mother's ailments. To Cassandra, and her mother, he is but a soldier reminiscing war and he has never disclosed why he'd been bound to service. When the stable boy who spoiled her virtue demanded payment, Thayer disclosed this to her father and offered to pay the remaining amount needed to send her to Mayfair as a ward of a noble family.
Lady Maude Whitlock: After encountering Maude on the outskirts of London kicking off her aristocratic title, he was surprised to see her back for the social season. He's used this secret to help him feign interest in the social season with the slight enticement to act excited about returning to high society to her parents by always promising him the first dance of every ball.
Lord Callum Sinclair: Frequenting the Sinclair Manor to call upon Miss Cassandra socially, Thayer has become quite curious of the younger Sinclair boy. There is something unsettling in him that he recognizes and Thayer is intrigued to not only understand, but show the young lord that he does.
Lord Henry Sinclair: You're always weary of the person who is most like you because you know what they are capable of, and that rings true for these two men. After they've made with peace with why Thayer frequents a house with two young debutantes, they will come to realize they are both uneasy at marriage prospects and team up to make it through the end of the season as bachelors.
Marchioness Elisa Sinclair: The Sinclairs don't get a break from Thayer, but it's vice versa as well. A friend of his lover, Cassandra's mother Portia, these two might be weary of each other most as they are more protective of the ward in the household above all else. Can these pseudo-parents find peace?
Lord Laurence Rosewood: Thayer's swift exit in the war following an attack used as a demonstration in Queen Anne's honor rang in Lord Laurence's apparent initiation for a taste of war. The two bonded over their similar reading choices and existentialism, leading to them keeping a friendship despite Thayer's attempt at isolation. Above everyone else, Thayer fights to remain positive for his friend's sake when they ramble on about their purpose and prospects even if he's one of the few he can be entirely honest with.
Duchess Emma Whitlock: Family has forced both of these two into greatness, but at what cost? Thayer sees a part of himself in Emma and he's drawn to her candor, but he knows there is more not being said. In attempts to comfort the other in a blossoming friendship, they may tear themselves down to prove the other has potential only to bury their sentiments of their circumstances even deeper.
