Standing in the middle of the campus, Pascal tossed her physics book straight up in the air, eyes focused on the spot it landed a few seconds later. “Interesting,” she mumbled to herself, pulling a pen out of her pocket to scribble mathematical equations on the palm of her hand.

Of all the things she’d been expecting to see, witnessing a physics book being thrown in the air on purpose wasn’t high on Rosetta’s list. Jumping at the loud smack the book made on the ground, she paused before peering at the girl in confusion. “What in the world do you think you’re doing?”

“You wear a mask for so long, you forget what’s underneath it.”

Nobody is sure quite how old Rosetta is or exactly where she comes from, and that’s how she likes it. The southern drawl may hint off that she’s come from the US southeast or midwest, and it’s clear by the few hints she’s dropped over the years that she’s certainly not the teenage persona that she so often puts on, but one thing is for certain: she’s not quite human. While Rosetta is quite ashamed of it, the truth of the matter is that she’s not the pretty brunette she shows the world. Instead, she’s a mutant, with blue skin and shockingly yellow eyes in her true form with the ability to shift into any human form she wishes, which she’s used to her full advantage by putting a facade out into the world. More than anything, she desires to be seen as normal. She never asked for these powers, and as far as she’s concerned, she wishes not to use them. 

Of course, she hasn’t truly gotten her wish. Despite her aversion to her powers, Rosetta - who for all intents and purposes, goes by Mystique - has found that many find them quite useful and are willing to pay good money to make use of them along with her skills in marksmanship and fighting ability. She’s direct and to the point, feminine when she needs to be, but don’t be fooled: she could kick your ass in a matter of seconds, which has made her a valuable asset. More often than not, it’s the villainous side of the spectrum who have vied for her help, which has mostly associated her with that side in particular, but in reality, she thinks of herself as fairly neutral, having no real desire to either better or ruin the world. All she really cares about is getting through in life and maintaining the facade that she’s not the mutant freak that she thinks the world would see her as if they saw what she truly was, and if getting her hands dirty was a way to provide for herself without risk of exposure, well... money is money.

“Shh,” Fawn whispered to the hawk she was pulling in a wagon behind her as the bird let out another piercing screech. “You’re going to get us caught.” If he hadn’t already. Her head whipping around to see the pair of eyes on her, she stopped in her tracks. Play it cool, Fawn, play it cool. “Hi there, what’s up? I’m not doing anything.” So much for playing it cool. A nervous laugh flitted through her lips. She moved directly in front of the wagon to shield it from view. “Just a regular seventeen year old girl taking a stroll, it’s such a pretty day, nothing out of the ordinary going on here so let’s keep moving…”

Rosetta had truly been trying to mind her own business, basking in the warm rays of the sun and trying her best to enjoy a beautiful, peaceful spring day. Of course, nothing at this school could ever be peaceful, and when a loud cry from what could only be some sort of wild animal broke the silence, she was quick to sit upright from where she’d been half-laying to search for the source of the noise. "Sure...” Her tone was unconvinced as she pushed her sunglasses down her nose and took a pointed, lingering glance at the not-at-all-suspicious wagon Fawn had been dragging along with her. “Let me guess: next you’re gonna be telling me that wagon’s carryin’ all your school supplies. Just please don’t tell me you don’t have some sort of bloodthirsty beast in there.”

His job included scouting out possible targets for his boss. He’d been leaning against this wall for an hour now just watching the owner of the car to see how careful he was. It would be an easy steal. He kicked a can and killed the cigarette on the ground under his shoe. He watched the man wipe his headlights before getting into his car.

“What a square.”

Rosetta had been peering closely in her hand mirror, using her ring finger to clean up the outline of her lipstick absentmindedly. Upon hearing the boy, however, she peered over the top of it with a quirked brow and quizzical expression. “And what’s got your panties in a bunch, daddy-o?”

Looking up Velma was a bit surprised seeing a girl clothed in a dress made of… was that candy wrappers? “Honestly, it’s pretty cool. But sounds kinda itchy.” Velma smiled, and gave the girl a small round of applause as the girl spun around in front of her. “Oh, of course. The holidays is the only time i can get away with gorging myself on sweets. I don’t like thinking about how much chocolate i ate one Valentines day. It’s not my fault every store i walked in had all the candy discounted.”

Rosetta grinned in delight, basking in the feeling of getting applause for her creation. Call her a creature of vanity, but she certainly enjoyed the appreciation for her creation. “Not really, actually. Maybe a little bit, but definitely not the itchiest thing I’ve ever worn in my life. Exactly! It’s like if they look down on you for eating too much of it, why do they make it so cheap?”

Naveen nodded along as enthusiastically as he could, “It is a very nice design. It does not matter what it is made out of because it is obvious you put a lot of hard work into it and it came out nicely. I cannot create anything like that and neither can most people so be proud.”

Rosetta was practically fawning over how kind the young man was even if it was clearly not something he was particularly interested in. “Aw, aren’t you just the sweetest lil’ thing I’ve ever met in my life. It’s really not too hard - you’d be amazed at what you can do with some willpower and a hot glue gun!”

I hope you know this necklace is the most feminine thing I’ve ever bought. I have the receipt for it and the CD in case you need to return them – my feelings won’t be hurt! Merry Christmas! Love you!

“It starts to lose charm after the first thousand times, cream puff.”

“Cream puff? Now hold on a gosh darn second... Who are you callin’ a cream puff?”

“It’s unique,” Fawn answered honestly. It was also a dress, and she didn’t care much for dresses. It looked like it belonged on a runway, so it couldn’t be too bad. She did have a question though. “When people hug you isn’t it going to get all crinkly?”

“Thank you.” Rosetta knew she wasn’t going to get too much out of Fawn, especially seeing that she wasn’t the fashion type, but then again, a compliment was a compliment. Her question, however, caught her off-guard and afer a moment’s pause, she let out a laugh of amusement. “Well, I suppose so, but fashion’s supposed to make a statement, right? I don’t mind the noise all that much, but that’s just me.”

“Darlin’, you look just fabulous! And the whole thing’s made of candy wrappers? Why, that’s mighty creative of you! I’ve never seen anythin’ like that before and you really do pull it off.”

“I know, right? I was originally going to do all those cheap-o little Valentines cards, but about halfway through the paper cuts just didn’t seem worth it anymore. ‘Course, it’s not Met Gala material, but thank you!”

Naveen stared at this girl as he held the baby carrier. He was confused and caught off-guard, “I think it is very pretty and you are very creative for making it.”

Despite the boy’s confused face, all was ignored when he complimented the outfit she’d spent the past 48 hours concocting. “See, someone gets it! You’re too kind, really. ‘Course, I would’ve made it out of something other than plastic if I had the materials, but I think it worked out great considering.”

“I’m sorry - did you just say you made a dress out of candy wrappers? And you’re actually wearing it? Rose, I don’t even… what the actual fuck?”

“Well, yeah, that’s what I had on hand! See, sometimes it turns out alright even after you’ve cried through the night eatin’ five bags of candy because you couldn’t find a date for Valentines. No, no, I’m kiddin’, so don’t make a fuss out of it. But I don’t see what the problem is - it’s cute, isn’t it?”

Penelope raised an eyebrow at the girl’s…interesting getup, but something between a grunt and a whine slipped out when she revealed the material of said getup.  “Please…please tell me I’m having some kind of chocolate-induced, Project Runway fever dream right now.”

Rosetta paused mid-twirl at the sound that came from the girl - whatever that was - at her outfit. “What?” she asked simply, brows raised in confusion, “Don’t you like it? I know it’s a lil’ unconventional, but it turned out cute. Fashion’s all about being inventive, y’know?”

“Call me ‘sassy’ one more time.  I fuckin’ dare you.”

“What’s wrong with sassy? I’m sassy! I know plenty of sassy people! It’s not like it’s a bad thing.”

Pascal was open to constructive criticism. She nodded along with Rosetta, already picturing it in her mind. The moat – she could do that, but she didn’t have the right ingredients. She needed cotton candy or blue jello. “If I had mayonnaise,” she thought it over aloud, “mixing it with ketchup could make pink paint. I can make a flag.”

“I like the way you think,” she sighed in satisfaction, clapping her hands together excitedly. “Ooh, wait, I’ve gotta have something in here to help.” Almost immediately, she dug in her bag before pulling out a handful of toothpicks along with a few assorted receipts out. “You’d be surprised how helpful these are for bedazzling, really. I collect ‘em when I can.” As if that were a rational explanation for her collection, but it hadn’t struck her that it was anything other than normal.

Dipping yet another tater tot in ketchup, Pascal carefully stuck it at the top of the deep fried potato castle she’d been working on for the last fifteen minutes, leaning back to marvel at her newest masterpiece.

“Y’know what would make that look even better?” Rose cut in, propping her chin in the palm of her hand. “A moat. Ooh, or a lil’ flag at the tippy top. You don’t think you can make it pink, do you? I know castles aren’t usually painted, but it’d be such a cute touch, don’t ya’ think?”
