The whole Drago thing shows how poorly trained Hiccup is for the role of Chief: When Stoick and Valka warned him that Drago is a man that can't be reasoned with, with time proving them right, Hiccup took it as "You are still the same weak boy from the forge." because his mind was so broken by 15 years of constant belittlement that he refused to follow any plans other than his own.
And you can blame Stoick's emotional laziness for not training him for the post: Stoick wanted a rough, hard warrior, but because he got a scrawny, intelligent son, he gave up on him and decided to relegate him to the forge. In warrior societies, the heirs are trained to rule ever since they learned to walk: fighting, languages, diplomacy and politics.
But Hiccup is slow to anger, too trusting and quick to forgive, fatal vices for a Chief to have....and they ended up costing Stoick's life, but that's the symptom. The root of the sickness is Stoick being an emotionally lazy father.
thinking about how valka's story doesn't make sense again,
like, so iirc valka was taken from berk when hiccup was a baby, during a raid by the dragons under the control of the red death, by cloudjumper who is a dragon and should have then fed her to the red death
but instead of being fed to the red death she was taken to the bewilderbeast????
The Only canon world map of the How To Train Your Dragon universe I'm willing to believe, is Valka's.
For any other dragon nerd that want it. ✌️
One of the reasons why I can’t bring myself to rewatch HTTYD3 is because Valka’s design change bothers me so much.
They literally removed all the physical features that made her so attractive and unique in the first place :-/

all characters can be placed in the categories of Deadbeat Dad or Mother Hen.
for example; Stoick is a Mother Hen and Valka is a Deadbeat Dad. Gobber? Mother Hen. Spitelout? Deadbeat Dad.
Why I believe httyd 2 canon can’t seem to decide if Valka is brave or a coward:
Using this httyd 2 transcript for reference
Things that point to her being brave:
Hiccup: Look, we don't want any trouble.
Eret: Ha! You should've thought of that before you stole all of our dragons and blasted our fort to bits!
^ Valka goes and frees dragons through destructive force against dragon trappers
Valka: We will change the world for all dragons! We will make it a better, safer place!
^ Very determined, very bold statement, very admirable goal. She seems pretty brave to be stating that
[Valka, dressed in battle armor and riding on Cloudjumper, emerges from the sky and summons the Alpha who breaks his way out of the nest and roars]
^ Seems brave and badass
Things that point to her being cowardly:
Valka: It broke my heart to stay away, but I believed you'd be safer if I did.
^ Okay but she finally got her proof (“I rushed to protect you, but what I saw... was proof of everything I believed”) and instead of coming back to Berk to show them that proof… she stayed away and decided humans couldn’t change?
Valka: What? There’s no talking to Drago.
Hiccup: But we have to--
Valka: No. We must protect our own. Now come on, we should be getting back.
^ No talking to Drago and apparently no directly confronting him either. A bit more understandable of a stance when she was one person on her own up against Drago’s army (though arguably she was never on her own when you take into account the nest of dragons) but now that she has help? Still not even being willing to try and stop Drago directly seems a bit… well… it’s contradictory to her earlier statement of wanting to change the world for dragon
**There’s probably more examples, and perhaps better examples or better ways I could’ve worded my thoughts, but I did this very briefly. Anyway, do you see why I personally believe they’re a bit too contradictory with if she’s brave or not in canon? Because obviously, people can have nuance to themselves and their actions, and they can have character development that lets them change. But to me I think this goes beyond a nuanced character and into an inconsistent character.
*Edit: perhaps not actually as contradictory as I thought! @flurbejurbvondurp made a really good point in the comments that I hadn’t considered when I was writing this post
My main opinions on Valka when I really boil them down come to this:
Super cool character concept, love the dragon lady thing she’s got going on, there’s so many aspects to her character that truly make her interesting to me
Awful mother who was forgiven for 20 years of abandonment way too easily. Would love to have seen a more complicated mother-son relationship take place
Canon in httyd 2 can’t seem to decide if she’s brave or a coward
