aight bet. what do u think of dbh Connor forced proximity maybe with some tension? perhaps enemies to lovers ? 👀
your wish is my command <3 im so sorry it took so long!//
"this is stupid." you grumble, pulling your coat closer to you. who's idea was it for you to sit in a car for 12 hours in the middle of january in detroit, anyways?
"it's imperative that we take thorough measures to further the case, detective." and who's idea was it to pair you with the one guy in the office that you couldn't stand?
maybe it was the way connor did everything right. maybe it was the way he wasn't just good at everything, he seemed so.. confident. maybe that was the reason you felt like you couldn't relax or even breathe with him around.
you had been on your stakeout for hours now. you thought you were losing your mind.
"connor," you start, "would you do me a favor?"
silenced filled the car for another half hour.
"do i make you.. uncomfortable detective?"
"what?" you huff, pulling the binoculars away from your face to look at him.
"you joke around with the other detectives. you're relaxed around them, so my hypothesis is that your discomfort around me is a unique circumstance."
"it's not.." you huff, "i just.. you're so.."
"robotic? annoying? neurotic?" connor recalls the insults he's heard time and time again from the detectives who definitely do not like connor, no room for error-- but with you, connor has this... instinct, maybe others would call it a hunch, that maybe it's not a prejudice against androids that fuels your discomfort... maybe it's just him.
"perfect." you finish, "i mean, connor, i've been on the force for two years longer than you, and you walk in and just.." you can feel frustration building up in your chest. you've dealt with people who waltz into rooms and get whatever they want when you've been working your ass off for ages, long before connor came along.
maybe what really bothers you is that connor's skill isn't something he brags about, something he doesn't gloat about. he's humble, and that's worse, oh it's so much worse.
"but that isn't..." connor hesitates. you've noticed that too. how he doesn't stand up for himself. you wonder if, like you, connor's resentment has lingered in his chest with no where to go. does he ever rant to anyone? does he know he won't get in trouble for speaking his mind?
then, this horrible, awful thought enters your mind--
maybe connor is just like you.
hard working, under appreciated, and completely ready to burst.
"go on." you coax, crossing your arms, and connor exhales slowly.
"that is not my fault." he starts, and you notice the LED light that sits on the side of his head, flickering yellow as he attempts to communicate his feelings. "i cannot help the way i was programed, but i assure you, detective, that i am not 'perfect'." he uses his fingers to make air quotes, and you've noticed that he tends to echo the behaviors around him-- you had done air quotes earlier when you told him that this was not an "undercover" mission as had been described by your coworkers.
it was just a stakeout. the longest of your life.
"oh, please," you scoff, "you have better numbers than any other detective, your reports are always done, and you always accomplish your mission." you recall, and connor cringes when you say those words.
"but you talk to witnesses and they don't flinch, or recoil when they notice you're human." he starts, "i look around at all of our fellow detectives and wonder what it is i've been missing. and i look at you, and i realize exactly what it is. i'll always just be an android. i might've been programmed to be perfect, but you're so.. real.. so.. you." your eyes meet, and for a moment, neither of you say anything.
then, connor's head tilts, and he notices the suspect you've been staking out exiting his home and making his way right towards the car you and connor are supposed to be subtle in. connor's scans detect a firearm in his pocket.
you turn to look at each other.
"okay, don't freak out," you start, "just trust me, okay?"
and if the two of you don't want to blow this, if the top two agents in detroit don't want to become the laughing stock of the break room, he doesn't have much of a choice.
connor nods, and exhales.
with that, you climb across the center console, sitting right on connor's lap. his face flushes a blue color, and if you weren't worried about being shot at point blank, you would find that endearing.
your lean down and your hand finds the lever on the side of the passenger seat, causing connor's seat, and by extension, connor, to fall back, so he's laying down. but he's staring at you, like a deer caught in headlights.
you move quickly, having survived one or two makeouts with boyfriends in cars in your time, your hand goes to connor's perfectly combed hair and begins to run through it, messing it up, as your other hand moves to tug apart a few buttons of his dress shirt, before it rests, palm flat against his chest.
connor's arms remain firmly at his sides.
perfect pretty robot doesn't have nearly as much experience with making out in cars as you do.
"put your hands on me, connor." you request, and he blinks, before hesitantly moving his hands, almost resting on your waist. you huff, and grab his hand with the one that was laying on his chest to push his hands onto your sides, which rest there, just barely.
you lean down, knowing the suspect is close to the car now, so it might look like you and connor are kissing, from his angle.
"con, close your eyes, we're supposed to be making out."
connor's eyes flutter shut, and for a moment, you just get to look at him, really admire the features of his face. something runs through you, maybe regret, because all you can think about is how alone connor must feel. there were no parents that raised him, no mother to share his eye color, no father to share his face with, no siblings to share his childhood with.. no lover to share his life with.
your eyes follow the suspect as he makes his way past your car, but he keeps walking. you let out a slow, relieved breath. when you do, connor's eyes open again.
"are you alright?" he asks, and you look down at him again. you consider your response, a small smile tugs at the corners of your lips.
"you know, you have a freckle, right here." you say, your finger coming up to his cheek, pressing against the spot you noticed. the blue color flushes connor's ears, just barely grazing his cheek, and it makes you giggle, like a fucking teenager, and connor leans up, his lips going to meet yours--
when someone bangs on the window of the car, startling you both.
you glance up and see a newer detective who you don't know super well, who probably doesn't even realize you're on a stakeout. you sit up, clearing your throat as connor's hands retract to your side. you roll down the window to ask,
"can i help you, officer?" you wonder.
"yeah, i noticed the two of you in here, and this is a residential street, you can't--"
you dig into connor's pocket, who hasn't said anything in minutes, finding his badge. you flash it at him.
"we're on a stakeout. perp got suspicious, so we got creative. he went south down this block, so i'd suggest you track him if you want to keep your job." you say, maybe a little too harshly, but it's too late--
connor is gone. full hook, line, and sinker.
"uh.. sorry to bother you, then." he clears his throat, and then just like that, it's just you and connor again, now with a light breeze coming in from the open window. you shiver, before moving off of him, and connor's hand moves to the side of his seat to pull it up again.
he's buttoning his shirt and fixing his hair by the time you get resettled into your chair.
"you know, detective.." connor starts, as he goes to roll up the window, neither of you looking at each other. "i didn't entirely mind our earlier position."
you scoff, but you can't help the smile that breaches your face. you think about what it would've been like to kiss connor, if you hadn't been so rudely interrupted.
"call hank, let him know the perp left, that we have a rookie tailing him." you tell him as you start up the car, "if you want to kiss me, you're going to have to do better than a stakeout in january." your voice is mostly playful, but it has that competitive edge that connor has grown very well accustomed to.
"well, if i'm programmed to be perfect, i'm sure i can figure out a suitable way to broach the subject."
you smile, realizing that he's attempting to flirt with you.
"i don't doubt that, connor."
