to preface, you can just delete this if it’s too personal or too much of a vent.
i’m coming from a position where my life kinda sucks. or this life that i experience. i have problems like parental issues, disabilities, dissatisfaction with my appearance, and more. so for years, i wanted to change my life (change the ego, reality shift, whatever). it was really nice to believe that it could miraculously change, but i spent two years doing the law of assumption and absolutely nothing changed. so it’s hard for me to believe that my life can actually improve in any way.
from a POV like this, it’s hard for me to believe that nonduality even means anything. it just feels completely meaningless to me. or it makes me feel worse about these circumstances. like, okay, i’m not the person. i can accept that. but ultimately i still have to wake up in a body that hurts all over, to a mother that screams at me, going to classes with migraines, having nobody to talk to, having zero hope for my life or my future, etc — if i can’t change anything of this by “knowing i’m actually the ocean,” then what’s the point?
this entire journey is stressful for me, it feels like just another stressor on my life, and i gain nothing from it. people say “oh, well, you’ll be a lot more detached from the thoughts and the events that happen!” and it’s like… okay… and i still have to experience them. i feel like much of this advise is targeted towards people who aren’t experiencing more serious troubles.
i can accept that the actual events and thoughts that are in my field of experience are technically impersonal, it’s kind of like playing a game as a first-person protagonist. but that makes me feel worse, because ultimately, i could have been born privileged/able-bodied/into a good family. and i just wasn’t, and there’s no grand reasoning or scheme for it. it just is. it’s hard for me to believe that this life actually means anything.
i just wanted to see a different perspective on it, or if you could give me some advice to make this all a lot easier.
"too personal"? nonsense. you and i are One, what could be more personal than that? : ) 🩷 it’s an honour to be here with you.
you’re not alone in how you feel. i too spent years in manifestation communities, at least 6 months trying for "the void state" alone. i don’t say this lightly nor figuratively, it was nearly the death of me. i would tell you what i went through but the list would be long and perhaps triggering for some, and this is not about me or "my" suffering anyway. just know that, although i appear as a stranger on the internet, i promise you i understand these feelings of hopelessness and despair. like, discarding all the awareness talk for a minute… on a human level, from one person to another, i get it. it’s agonising when you’re in it.
you remind me so much of one of my favourite """success stories""", an anon of lains. their journey started so much like yours. i watched their progress in real time via the multiple updates they sent lains/sophie, it was really inspiring for me. i think reading through it will help you:
part 1 | part 2 | part 3 | part 4
there is a lot to take in and multiple links to look through, especially in lain’s response in part one, so just go at your own pace and take a break from reading if it gets overwhelming!
"if i can’t change any of this then what’s the point?"
yes, you can. the point is to be free, to do whatever you want at all times. but you will struggle to do that if you don’t realise who "you" is. i’m sure you’ve heard that a million times, i don’t doubt that you already understand it on some level. but you have to put it into practice. it feels like effort only because you’re trying to be what you naturally are through a thing that simply isn’t (ego).
as it stands, life is happening as if happens, right? you’ve tried for 2 years to fix it through manifestation and it didn’t work because ego is incapacitated. i’m not here to tell you to try to change it (that happens on its own), all i’m asking you to do is try to change your attitude towards it.
i am not telling you to grin and bear it or affirm through it. it hurts, and you don’t need to pretend it doesn’t. just try, when you have the time, even if it’s just in the 10 minutes before you fall asleep at night, to relax your body, close your eyes, take deep breaths and watch what happens. that’s all i’m asking you to do for now. that’s it. there will be things that happen — thoughts that pass, painful sensations that arise in the body — and i’m asking you to let them. just keep watch of them. if you get distracted, if you cry, if you get frustrated, if you feel heartbroken, if you feel dejected, whatever you feel in these moments of stillness and silence… just allow it to happen. give it the grace to be. don’t try to transmute it, silence it, pass judgement on it. you know by now that you (the character) can’t stop it anyway. if you do notice yourself passing judgement on it or trying to push it away, notice that too. i mean literally notice it: "this hurts. this feels sad. this feels heavy. this feels boring". accept that your being is worth spending at least 10 minutes with. just be with yourself.
incorporate these moments of stillness wherever and whenever you can. even if it’s 5 minutes in the morning when you first wake up or in the shower/bath. be intentional about it. RECOGNISE in this moment "i’m here, i’m now, i’m present". you don’t need to expect anything revolutionary to happen. i know you feel impeded by desire, i know you want something different, but just for this moment accept that "if this is what the dream is showing right now, does it not make more sense to let it than to waste my energy fighting it?". start probing these thoughts, start to ask yourself: "to whom does it all happen?", "is this really me?" (and if the mind says "yes", then) "who am i?". investigate, without forcing: "could i allow this to not be my responsibility today? what if i let this have nothing to do with me?"
and if things happen that get very intense or overwhelming, write about it. journal it. vent your frustrations with total candour. "quite frankly, fuck being indifferent and fuck "sounding enlightened", i’m mad and i’m hurt and i hate everything and i’m so fed up".
i also would like you to read "master of self-realisation" by shri sadguru siddharameshwar maharaj at some point (you can find it in kelly’s google drive here). it doesn’t have to be today if this is all too much right now, maybe in a couple of days when you’ve read through the linked posts and processed lains’ advice and allowed time for your nervous system to calm. i’ve got an entire post written in my drafts about the book because i truly cannot tell you how much it shifted my attitude (and, by consequence, my world). i reached a plateau in my journey a while back where i was mostly indifferent to what was playing out in front of me, but still somewhat… unsatisfied? i felt some peace and that was nice, but my life still felt small, insignificant, and largely unchanged. i had an understanding that it wasn’t me, but i didn’t really know what to do with that. now, you don’t even have to read the entire two volumes, the first few chapters alone did wonders for my change in spirit. it was just so refreshing and freeing to read about this stuff from a guru born in the 19th century who lived on the other side of the world from me. it made me feel lucky to be here, and to be waking up. it made me realise how "real" this all really is, that this is to be taken more seriously than anything else in your life. this isn’t a teenage girlblogger posting from her room because she’s trying to "act as if", this is a man born in a completely different continent to me, raised in different circumstances, who died long before i was born and yet whose teachings i have been fortunate enough to stumble across and whose words resonate so profoundly with me. i had already read multiple spiritual books including, at least a year prior, "i am that" by nisargadatta maharaj (who was the disciple of siddharameshwar maharaj) so i can’t really explain why it was this book specifically that ended my incessant seeking. it just really resonated and made it all ‘click’ for some reason. it might not for everyone and that’s ok, try not to go into it with expectations but instead just be open to what you find (and also remember that i still had to apply for myself i.e. sit in silence and meditate on what i’d read, the reading alone didn’t ‘free’ me). nonetheless, i think it’s worth giving it a shot. what have you got to lose? : )
maybe his worlds will show you that freedom and bliss really are possible. not just possible, but your inherent nature. here are some excerpts that might encourage you:
and lastly, remember, there is no need to be dejected. i promise it will happen. anything done with the desire to realise yourSelf will take you there. you are already far closer than you think and it gets easier as you go. yourSelf is truly the nearest of all. you’re at the final hurdle. have faith. 🩵🩵🩵
