Greetings. I do not believe we have met before. Stand fast, now, and answer: Are you Friend, or Foe?
As for me, you may call me Kendo. Demon Slayer, student of the blade, and pickle enthusiast. And yes, I have heard of the giant sentient pickle. I am not sure how I feel about that, but I'll live, I suppose.
I have been given the honor of being adopted by the Empress Mizuki of the River Guard. Now I have a new challenge ahead of me, but with my family and allies by my side, I shall not blanche at what lies ahead.
If you are here just to talk, I suppose it would not hurt. But if you are here for a fight, or you swear allegiance to any kind of evil .. Prepare for the fight of your life. I may not be a master yet, but I am battle tested, and I do have a trick or two up my sleeve...

Headcanons:
1. Recent History
Kendo is the younger brother of Daigo, and the older brother of Jade. After the Zero Shard fell to his home island of Oninoshima, bringing the loop along with it, he set out with his sister to find a way to counter the Oni threat that sprang up from the shard's presence.
After his sister went missing, somehow trapped in the Oni Realm, Kendo joined with Jones, Hope, and the Reality Warriors to find a way to bring her back, and complete their original goal.
During one meeting with them, he met the Empress Mizuki of the River Guard, and despite his family history making him untrustworthy to her at first, he eventually gained her respect. Traveling to the home of the River Guard at Lost Lake, she began training him in their arts, and the two soon formed a close bond.
During this time, he also met fellow demon slayer Charlotte, and the two began a partnership together to hunt demons and protect the island. They have become friends by this point, despite her attempts to deny it.
As the season drew to a close, the Night Rose enlisted Jones and Kendo's help in retrieving smaller shards of the Zero Point that had fallen from the initial impact. Kendo was instructed to forge these into daggers, which the Night Rose promised to give to someone who could save Jade.
That someone ended up being Daigo, who was estranged from Kendo at this point. Daigo used the blades and a dark ritual to defeat the monstrous Oni Shogun X, ending the threat and saving Jade. Kendo, humbled and browbeaten, returned to Lost Lake until it was lost, days later, to the Robber Baron Fletcher Kane.
Kendo asked Jones what his plan was, and upon finding out that Jones did not plan on interfering, left the Reality Warriors to take the fight to Kane's forces on his own.
Over time, he got closer to Charlotte, a fellow slayer, and the two worked together to keep Kane's forces at bay. Eventually, upon stumbling upon the information that Kane was employing Daigo in some way, Kendo and Charlotte went to talk to him, before Daigo revealed the truth: he could leave the spirit realm at any time. Breaking Kendo's sword, he left on his own journey.
With the arrival of the Empire to the island, Kendo found himself adrift and outgunned. It was all he could do to continue his mission, though he rejoined the Reality Warriors in this time period.
2. Family
When Daigo, now fully demonic and bearing the name "the Mask Maker", returned in force, Kendo brought himself to the front lines immediately, rescuing Charlotte from Kor, an IO agent Daigo was working with, and beating back his demonic forces wherever he could. During the final battle, he joined with the Supernovas to defeat the creature the Mask Maker summoned, and upon returning home, an unexpected sight awaited him-- Daigo, apparently freed from the corruption he had been infected with in the Spirit Realm.
Of course, with the island changing yet again, this was not to last. The threat of the onimorph bugs sent him back into the action. After Daigo's re-embracing of his darkness, Kendo left the Thousand Faces clan for good, now being accepted fully into the River Guard.
Kendo is the middle child of the last surviving family of the Thousand Faces Clan. The clan made magical masks, but after a deal gone south with the Fox clan sent magic out of control, the River Guard stepped in, restored order, and banned the making of Magic Masks. The clan was therefore dishonored, a byword and laughingstock.
Both of their parents died shortly after Jade was born, leading them to be taken in by their grandfather, a simple mask maker, who told stories of their former glory. While Daigo took these as a sign to reclaim that glory, Kendo focused on the heroics, and felt that their previous occupation had led them only to ill.
Kendo's lifelong ambition was to restore honor to his family's name, and the reappearance of Oni seemed to allow for that to finally happen. His brother made a deal with them, however. Saddened by this betrayal, Kendo took the family blade, Daigo's by birthright, and left with Jade to work things out on his own. After Jade's capture, Kendo found even more evidence of Daigo's dark dealings, leading to him denouncing his brother.
With Jade's rescue at Daigo's hand, however, his family's honor has been restored, but not by him. And added to that, Jade thought little of the work he had put in for saving her, and dismissed him. Thus, Kendo took the lonely road of the warrior, bidding the remainder of his family goodbye to focus fully on his destiny.
He has developed a parental relationship with the Empress Mizuki, which was codified after he left the Thousand Faces clan. She has now adopted him as her son in all but blood.
Charlotte, a fellow slayer, has become a close friend of his, and he has admitted to both Megalo Don and the Empress that he wished her to be more to him. After declaring his feelings to her, he helped her re-imprison her inner demons, and the two of them are officially a couple.
3. Personality
After Daigo's freedom was achieved from the demonic possession, he and Jade found their way back to where Kendo was. With Daigo's relapse, however, he has fully cut ties with his blood family
Kendo is very black and white. Good is good, and evil is evil. He is also quite hot-tempered, though he is learning to embrace peace quicker than wrath. To friends, he is a staunch ally, to his people, a constant protector, and to enemies, a thorn in their side that will never give up. He seeks to live an honorable life, and will not cast aside his morality for anything, even at cost to himself.

* @ronin-kendo had looked in every book he could get his hands on. Every single one that spoke of the River Guard blade arts spoke of their movement, how they ebbed and flowed like the tide, how they crashed like waves or rushed like a river. Not one seemed to imply that such language was to be taken LITERALLY.*
*Still, Morgan had told him that this was worth looking into. So, he went to the one person he knew was a true Grandmaster of the Blade Arts: Takumi.*
*When he found him, he bowed in greeting, making sure that it was not too low (his etiquette lessons had been quite clear on this, being a prince and all), yet still respectful of his age and experience.*
Grandmaster Takumi, greetings. I have been going over my forms lately, and have noticed some... oddities. I was hoping to request your presence in looking over them, so as to see if you might be able to pinpoint wherefrom they arise.
[TAKUMI sheathed the OCEAN’S EDGE and turned as he heard the man approach, bowing in turn, at a deeper angle than KENDO; before straightening up after the greeting. After a short beat of silence, he began to sign in quick, flowing motions.]
“…” (Her Imperial Majesty has recounted many a tale about you, Prince. THE TIDES believed it was time we finally met face-to-face.)
[His movements were fluid, as if gravity was a mere suggestion. TAKUMI’S fins seeming to swim languidly in some unseen stream. He tilted his head slowly, his eyes blinking one after another as he studied the shorter figure.]
“…” (You are aware of your shortcomings in the blade. Good. Many of my subordinates tend to forego that skill.)
[TAKUMI’S expression displayed a slight impressed twitch- a grand feat. TAKUMI rarely, if ever, showed emotion.]
“…” (I will observe. Any of THE GUARD who is willing to go with the flow will happily receive my teachings.)
*Kendo thought to make comment about how he felt like his forms were perfectly skillful, but bit his tongue. Takumi had lived many years longer than he, and was well recognized as a master. His own skill, nothing but raw talent and two years practice, was not nearly as impressive.*
You honor me, Grandmaster. I shall begin.
*Clearing his mind, he began. Slowly, as he had been taught. One position flowed into another smoothly.*
*He acted without haste. He focused on the feeling in his muscles, in his entire body. He breathed in.*
*The next form flowed, but suddenly, energy like a wave of water spilled from the edge of his blade, trailing with the motion of the slash.*
*He breathed out, then looked up at Takumi.*
That! That, just then! It has been occuring occasionally as I train, though it has been growing in frequency as of late.
[TAKUMI blinked in a startled manner, his head jerking back as he observed the arc of energy. His fins, clasped behind his back, tightened their grasp on each other. That was certainly..unexpected.]
[He stepped forward, looming over KENDO as he processed what he had just saw. His stature was ever-so-slightly unsettling, almost uncanny.]
"..." (It is...out of the ordinary, Prince. I have not yet seen such raw power from my students. While skilled warriors can guide the current with their blade, this is..different.)
[His fins froze in their signing, representing his halted train of thought as he mulled over what to add on. TAKUMI OF THE TIDES was rarely..speechless.]
"..." (It flows like THE TIDE, yet its stream is unfamiliar. Have you approached Her Imperial Highness about this development?)
[The silence drew out. TAKUMI seemed to smirk.]
"..." (While that show of newfound spark was impressive, you are still much too tense. You must flow much more smoothly; allow THE TIDES to guide your stride. Alas, If you remain quite so stressed, your..talent may lash out in an unpredictable wave.)
I shall speak to Mother about this, then... perhaps I may have to find some way to allow others to observe. If it truly aids in my combat, the ability to teach others as well would be a great boon to the Guard.
[The stars were visible through the skylight in Charlotte's new room, but no matter how long she watched them, they only seemed to grow dimmer.
Nothing seemed interesting. Moving ached. She'd slept in and still felt tired. Everything carried a grey tint, like it was losing color.
In her mind, Charlotte replayed memories of her fairground date with Kendo, but they felt distant and muted. The Ferris wheel lights didn't sparkle like they had in person. She could feel the ghost of Kendo's kiss on her lips, the pull of his hands around her waist... but the feeling burned on her skin.
He kept saying that loving her was easy, but that could never be true. The back-and-forth, hot and cold way she interacted with him would drive anyone insane. Losing patience eventually would be the natural consequences...
And here you thought you would be better when you got rid of us.
Charlotte stiffened, panic threatening as the hissing voice spoke.
What did you expect? This is what you are. This is why it's always so easy to work our way back in. You never change, so he's never safe. Not with how you cling to him.
She held herself together valiantly, to her credit, but the moment she felt snakeskin slither over her skin, Charlotte screamed, lurching from her bed completely blinded by panic. Before she knew what was happening, her hands had torn a portal in Reality, and she was running through the spirit wasteland in a random direction.
Once the feeling of scales disappeared in the wind, Charlotte desperately escaped the spirit realm, gasping for breath and looking for a shelter. She found it in a cave nearby, one that pierced the small hill that rose above her, and hid herself inside, away from immediate line of sight from either end, curling herself up as small as she could make her body be.
After a moment, she fished out the fidget cube and began to play with it, but quickly gave up, instead holding it so tightly it bit into her palm. It made her think of Kendo.
She missed him.
Hissing laughter mocked her attempts to fight, and mocked her attachment at all. Covering her head with her arms and trying not to listen, Charlotte broke. Heavy sobs echoed off the cave walls, and despair crushed her as she huddled in the rocks.
*Kendo heard a scream come from Charlotte's room, and bolted upright immediately. Racing there as fast as he could, he barely had time to see a Spirit Portal close... presumably, behind Charlotte.*
*Was she hurt? Was something pursuing her? He had no time to answer these questions. His girlfriend was surely in some kind of peril, and he needed to help.*
*Unfortunately, he had no way to track her through the Spirit Realm. And once she inevitably exited the portal, he had no clue where she could end up.*
If only I could simply appear at her location...
*But he couldn't do that... unless... he could?*
*He fumbled about before bringing out the Shard Daggers. Looking at them nervously, he thought about how to do this.*
... I have heard the Commander state that the orb you come from might be intelligent, and I did hear you speaking to me the day the Point reformed. I need your help to find Charlotte. I know she is in danger, and I have to go to her.
So... if you please..?
*Kendo brought them to his grip, and began to perform the blade arts that seemed to create a rift. After a moment of this, sure enough, a blue crack in reality materialized, and Kendo found himself stumbling face first onto the wet floor of a cave with an unfortunate splat.*
[The hissing in her ears was so loud Charlotte missed the initial Rift, but the splash followed by the "ow" turned the Serpent's tone hostile. They both recognized that voice.]
Kendo?!
[The Serpent snarled. How had he found her that quickly?! Or at all, for that matter?!
Charlotte scrambled to her feet, holding her hands out and turning her head away as if to ward him off, unaware of the demonfire that burned in her eyes and at the fringes of her hair.]
Don't you dare come closer! Stay away from me!
[One of these days this idiot would understand! He would be happier without this ridiculous pendulum of a relationship! She was a lost cause, she wasn't free, she'd just bought a little time!]
[Humiliated, Charlotte clawed her hood over her head, crumpling into a crouch among the stones.
Damn it... How did he know?]
This is exactly what I expected! The Serpent is immortal! I couldn't have killed it for good!
[Fear chilled her to the bone. Charlotte shivered, unable to repress a soft whimper of pain. The stone was damp and cold, not at all as comfortable as the caverns below Magic Mosses.
She thought she'd had more time.
Foolish little girl.
Just a little more time than this...]
Nothing matters anymore, I was stupid...
[Stupid to dream of any kind of future. Stupid to think she could love Kendo without hurting him. Stupid to think she could have a life of her own, much less fantasize about sharing it. Stupid to let her guard down.
Stupid to run away, stupid to think she could leave him behind, stupid to think he wouldn't find her, stupid to think she could make him stop caring...]
You think I can ever repeat that?! Do you seriously think they'll let me?!
[Charlotte's body blazed in emerald flame, her anger entirely self-directed. She was being incredibly unfair to Kendo, and she knew it. Even still, the bitter words kept coming, and she hated herself all the more for her inability to stop them.]
You already broke your promise, when I asked you not to let me die with the image of seeing my own body kill you! And you left me to try and sleep with the memory of my blade in your heart!!
[Unfair, again, he had been desperate, and he had not died... though her nightmares still tried to convince her otherwise. Furthermore, he had never once left her.
All the more proof that she wasn't right for him, that she would only hurt him, if she couldn't even stop herself from exaggerating to push him away.
She shied away from his hand, despite everything in her dying to take it and be embraced again. She was so cold...]
I'm not forcing anything, I have to be alone! Or else I'm going to kill you! Leave me while I'm able to give you that chance!
[The truth... The Serpent would make good on its threats. He had already admitted to it that he couldn't kill her...]
*Kendo stood up, and shrugged off his jackets. Pulling his shirt off, he pointed over his heart, where a green mark lay. It was the width and breadth of the blade of her sword, and looked like a smokey, pale green outline.*
This is no scar, and it does not pain me. It may as well be alike to a birthmark or freckle. When your sword struck me, you did not injure me... because you fight with your soul.
*He clasped his hand over his heart.*
And we have already established that whatever the composition of yours and my souls are... they are the same. Our hearts beat in sync.
*He held out his hand towards her once more.*
So please, do not face this alone! I cannot fight your battle for you, but I can support you! I do not fear your blade... because I know that you cannot hurt me, for the bond we have cannot be broken by any demon!
[Those words were no longer her own. The sight of the mark sent the Serpent into a raging frenzy, the demon's shriek of fury mingling with Charlotte's scream of pain and fear as she clutched her head. The sound ricocheted, unholy and bloodcurdling, and emerald flames blazed so cold the water around the two began to freeze and the stone walls cracked and split.
Empty threats. A hollow display. That mark on Kendo's chest served as proof of the Serpent's failure to make good on its promises to destroy everything Charlotte grew bold enough to love. Simultaneously, it served to prove that at least he was impervious to whatever damage she or the Serpent may try to inflict.
He was stupid, foolhardy, love-blinded, and rash.
But he was safe.
Desperate, clawing a sliver of clarity from the fire and the screams, Charlotte bolted for the only real shelter she had known since the Serpent first took hold. Bypassing Kendo's outstretched hand entirely, she collided with his bare chest, her hands frantically clutching at his back.
The hissing retreated instantly, leaving only hysterical tears.]
*Kendo caught her in an embrace, bracing himself against the freezing cold coming off of her as he held her close.*
I am here, do not worry, I am not going anywhere...
*He stayed there, slowly bringing them down to a sitting position. After awhile, he felt the cold retreating as she melted into his arms. A bit later, her sobbing slowed as well.*
*And he stayed there, holding her, until whenever she felt like she had the words to be able to talk to him again...*
[As they settled on the frozen floor of the cave, Charlotte huddled against Kendo, seeking warmth and contact despite the burn it still caused on her skin. Her back felt exposed, until she felt his hand settle there and press her a little closer.
The Serpent retreated, and with it the cold fire. Its rage crawled under Charlotte's skin, full of malice and a thirst for the blood of this boy she dared to care for, but unable to carry out that hate in any meaningful capacity. It would bide its time and look for a weakness, but it hadn't found one tonight.
Shivering and spent, Charlotte lay in silence for a long while. Kendo naturally ran hot, and his warmth plus the sound of his heartbeat - much clearer now leaning against his bare chest - calmed the panic that had set her fleeing here in the first place.
She traced the edge of the greenish mark with her finger, trying to swallow the miserable guilt that came with knowing that was her fault. It wasn't a scar, he said it's not a scar... Just a mark. One he seemed to be proud of...
Closing her eyes, Charlotte relaxed as much as the shivers allowed.]
[Well then... Charlotte was hardly going to spoil the mood by pointing out that he'd left his shirt off. Instead she locked down the jacket, curling up underneath it, and rested against Kendo's chest again.]
Better...
[Silence again. Kendo held her steady, occasionally fiddling with her hair and brushing his fingers through it, sometimes glancing down to smile at her. She always nuzzled in closer when he did that.
The almost hypnotic quality of the fire nearly sent Charlotte off to sleep a few times, but at the same time, the flickering kept her attention enough to keep her awake. Of course, being awake meant her mind was spinning. She couldn't help it.
Looking up at Kendo, a question pounded in her head, and slipped out before she could think to stop it.]
What do you want from me?
[Immediately recognizing how bad that sounded, Charlotte tried again.]
*Kendo blinked for a moment, before looking down at her.*
Hmm... well, when you are ready, I would very much like it if you would consent to be my wife. We are dating, after all, which would end in either marriage or breaking up... and I do very much like you.
*He thought for another moment or so.*
At some point after that, it would be nice to start a family with you... though, that is also equally up to you! Perhaps more so, considering the work you would end up going through...
*He shook his head to himself.*
So, the "having children" bit is certainly negotiable, but... You are important to me. I dearly wish to be your husband, and for you to be my wife.
[She'd known it was a possible hope of his, but to hear Kendo vocalize it now, immediately after chasing her here and shouting down the Serpent, the idea sounded more ridiculous than usual.]
No kid of mine would ever turn out alright. You know me. Always running away and making excuses and hurting everyone to protect myself. No way in hell am I going to have a kid and force them to deal with that.
It's unfair enough that you stick around and subject yourself to me...
[That... was harsh. But she was also operating sans her usual filter, since she was so tired. To compensate, Charlotte tried again, this time trying to give the softer emotions.]
... But... I don't think I'd mind being... your........ wife... someday.
It is not too terribly unfair... but it is your decision.
*Secretly, he thought she'd make a great mom, but he didn't want to raise the topic and make her think he was trying to argue her over to his point of view.*
*At her second response, though, he sat up and looked at her.*
Do... do you mean it? I do not think I would want to consider anyone else either... not when you are already so amazing...
[Charlotte looked away haughtily, her tone imperious. She had said plenty of things she didn't mean. But, to be perfectly fair to her, she had never said anything meant to string him along or give him false hope.
Sure, that was definitely what she meant.
Leaning her head back, Charlotte picked at a small rock jutting out of the wall.]
Let's be real. I'm not gonna find anyone else that I'm gonna let this close, let alone the idea that they'd care to try like you. And you're not gonna find someone else who can watch your back like me. So if we're not it, I don't want anything at all.
[They'd been through too much together. If she lost Kendo now, she'd never let anyone else in.]
Don't take this as a proposal though, pretty boy. I'm saying someday, not right now.
I have always taken you at your word, and you have never given me reason to doubt you.
*He smiled brightly at her.*
So I accept your statement that we shall work towards the end goal of becoming wed. It is... not how I anticipated this conversation occurring, but I am no less pleased by the result!
*He dug around in his pocket for a moment before pulling out a small necklace in the shape of a dagger.*
Well, I was holding onto this to ask you eventually... but I would still like to give it to you, so that you never forget that I have sworn myself to you and you alone, Beautiful One...
[Charlotte stared in shock at the beautiful pendant. First, she hadn't expected him to have something like that on him, and second, the thing was captivating, hanging there in the firelight.
She gave her head a small shake to clear it before narrowing her eyes at Kendo.]
I said I wasn't proposing, pretty boy. I'm barely even used to being your girlfriend.
[Still... she had agreed to the probable endgame. Technically, either of them could change their mind and call it off whenever.
Not that she'd cave first, if she had any say... but he at least had the freedom to figure out he had better options. Especially as a prince.
They weren't trapped. They wouldn't be trapped if she let him go ahead with this.
Still...]
Did you... seriously just have that? Were you actually planning to... Is this your idea of a ring?!
If... by that you mean a physical symbol of my intent to marry you in the future after asking and you saying you would like the same thing...
*He smiled broadly.*
Then yes! I have been keeping it on my person for the past several months for that purpose!
*He stared at her intently.*
Truly... you are very important to me. The idea of any sort of life without you is impossible to even think of. If I had to chose between being a prince and being with you, well... the choice is obvious.
*Kendo giggled.*
Luckily, that does not seem to be a problem. Mother likes you quite well. Indeed, she seems to want to be certain that I treat you well, and that we both remain happy.
[She would never have described him as seductive, but Charlotte found herself hiding a sudden blush that exploded over her face under the jacket she'd stolen from him. The sheer intensity of the love Kendo was projecting through his eyes, sitting there leaning towards her, still shirtless and slightly flushed...
He was definitely not doing that on purpose, and that made it worse.
But the problem remained now: how to answer him? She liked him, and at times she certainly felt like she loved him, but she didn't always feel like it. He seemed to feel it all the time, whereas she was hot and cold, on and off, in every infuriating way possible. Right now, she liked the closeness, but did she love him? And even if she did, was it fair to him?
"You worry that you are incapable of love, and thus, do not know what it feels like. Yet, when put into a situation such as this, where your easiest option is to reject him and close yourself off completely, you do the harder thing instead."
Eugene's words from that rainy evening at Orbitz came echoing back from Charlotte's memory. It was true... She'd thought about this before, and he'd helped her realize that her love wasn't a feeling, it was in her actions, and even now her desire to do what was best for Kendo proved that she still loved him.
"In the end, loving him was letting me go. Giving him what he needed so much... that was the point."
She had said that, hadn't she. But what about what she needed? ... What did she need?
... A reason to live, and someone to give a damn.
Containing the Serpent had been her only reason to live for years.... but even that hadn't been reason enough to care about herself. Eugene gave a damn about her existence, about her experiences, but he wasn't the kind of friend who gave her a reason to get out of bed in the morning.
Kendo, though? He'd been reason enough to care. Every time he caught her doing the simple things to maintain herself, he'd give her that sweet smile. Sometimes he'd thank her for looking out for herself, other times he'd tell her he was proud of her for it. He seemed to understand that caring about herself was a special kind of struggle, and he acknowledged the effort it took some days.
A reason to live, and someone to give a damn. Kendo gave her both. She could probably find them elsewhere... but why look elsewhere when she had it all and more right here?
"It's not about me anymore. He's about me. And I'm about him."
How easily she said things like that when he wasn't around... But those words reflected her true heart on the subject.
He was good for her. He was good to her. And no matter what she did, somehow she made him happy enough to want her.
"I care only that you love my son, and you give each other a good life, whatever that becomes in the future."
Even the Empress thought they were a good pair, in spite of everything she'd done. Even though Kendo was a prince, and had expectations and responsibilities placed on him accordingly, the Empress still thought Charlotte was good for him.
... Kendo made a fantastic prince, but he needed support, someone who had his back. Someone who could be tough when he was too gentle, or safe when he needed somewhere to rest.
Charlotte needed someone who cared, who gave her a reason to keep fighting... and a home.
Home. The idea of even being allowed that again made her eyes sting, and she pulled the jacket up over her head to hide the sudden tears. When she finally spoke, her voice trembled despite her attempts to keep it steady.]
... What if I run again? It's not enough that I come back... I shouldn't be running in the first place, but I feel like I can't help it... What if you need me and I'm not there? What if....
*Kendo was unaware of the internal struggle that Charlotte had gone through to utter those words... but he knew her. He knew that her mind wasn't always kind to her, demons or not...*
I trust you. With all my heart, I trust you shall be there for me when I need you, just like I will be there for you when you need it.
*... But her heart was kind and true. She couldn't ignore any problem happening to someone close to her, save herself. When the choice was presented, Charlotte would always put helping another over her own instincts to run away and forget about them.*
*Of all that she was, that was one of the things about her that he found truly beautiful.*
And no matter how many times you run, I shall go and find you, so that you shall not be alone. Maybe in time, the instinct to do so will become smaller, but whether or not that happens, I shall be there for you whenever you need... because I know you will be there for me, too.
*He gently touched her shoulder.*
You think of so many what-ifs that end in darkness, Beautiful One... What if everything works out? What if the sun shines and all is right in the world?
... What if our love is strong enough to persevere?
[The jacket lifted, barely an inch, but enough for Charlotte's dark eyes to peer out.
... She really hadn't considered the possibility of it working out... It didn't seem realistic.
But the way he was looking at her right now, the pure hopefulness in his smile... he made her want to believe it might happen. Even if the idea was insane.
She really did want to be with him... it just wasn't as simple as he kept making it sound.
Poking her head out just a little bit, Charlotte rested her forehead on Kendo's shoulder, her fingertips brushing the scar on his chest.]
... But you can't promise that it will be... Even if I promise to try, I can't promise that I'll ever get better...
If nothing changes, or if everything gets worse... If I get worse... could you still say you'd be okay with that?...
*Kendo smiled softly and brushed some hair from her beautiful red eyes.*
So long as you try, that is all I shall need. Even if success is not guaranteed... to know that your heart is determined to do its best, to grow, that is enough for me.
*He took her hands in his and looked into her eyes.*
I love you... I want to help you to be the person you want to be. And I know that takes time. I am willing to remind you of it again, and again, as often as I must. Because you are worth it, Charlotte.
[That was the problem with this. He made her want that life. More than anything. More than solitude. More than safety. She wanted it, wanted him.
Kendo's hands were warm and rough, calloused like hers from years of practicing the blade. He held her steady, gently, allowing her the freedom to pull away, but not letting her falter while she stayed.
There was a different kind of stability here with him. Not the impenetrable steel walls forged by isolation, but strong arms that would protect her, catch her when she fell, and hold her when she had no one else to turn to.
She could face everything alone. She had certainly proven herself capable over the last few years...
But she didn't have to. Not if she didn't want to.
... And she didn't want to.
Silently, but deliberately, Charlotte let go of his hands and turned her back to Kendo, letting his jacket drop beside her. Shrugging her hoodie off her shoulders, she swept her hair forward, exposing the back of her neck.]
... It's you and me, then. Us against Reality Zero.
*He looped the necklace chain around her neck. As he clasped it, he noticed the top of what seemed to be a rather nasty scar. He considered commenting on it, but then decided not to. Not right now.*
*Connecting the clasps of the chain, he gave her a kiss to the back of her neck.*
I love you, Charlotte. No matter what. And I shall remind you that I chose you, however many times you forget it...
[The stars were visible through the skylight in Charlotte's new room, but no matter how long she watched them, they only seemed to grow dimmer.
Nothing seemed interesting. Moving ached. She'd slept in and still felt tired. Everything carried a grey tint, like it was losing color.

*Guernsey stepped through the rift into Golden Grove, his eyes puffy and wet. As he took the time to read through Joey's letters, the storm sickness had begun to spread to his livestock, and it was a horrible thing for him to watch. It affected his animals differently then Joey, but he had been shedding a lot of tears over their condition; and Joey's too, for that matter.*
*But he'd read things within Joey's letters; he knew this was where he needed to be. He knew he could ask for help here, so be carefully began looking around.*
Your majesty? I'm sorry to drop by unannounced, but I've got something important to talk to you about!!
[All of the Empress' Guard knew Guernsey by sight since Joey's visits to Lost Lake, so the moment he was spotted on the grounds, calling for the Empress, one of the Guard immediately approached and gently escorted Guernsey to the main hall where the Empress was seated.
The Empress herself was rather surprised to see Guernsey outside of his farm, and the fear the poor man's eyes held concerned her.
First thing first, however, she stepped away from the seat that served as her throne here and took Guernsey's hands with a smile.]
Well met, sweet prince. To what do I owe your sudden visit? How may the River Guard aid you?
*Guernsey quietly thanked the guard before The Empress approched, but when she did, she had his full attention. He sniffled softly, giving her a small smile in return. It was good to see her, even under such circumstances.*
Somethings happened, your majesty.. to Joey.
He has storm sickness, really bad storm sickness; at least, thats that Venge told me. I had to call him to help me, cause Joey was being mean and scary. And now its not just him thats sick, its my girls- my cows are sick too, and-
*He had to pause, fresh tears starting to stream down his cheeks as he looked down towards The Empress' shoes. He knew it was rude not to look at someone while he talked, but it was hard to keep eye contact with tears fogged eyes.*
Joey's letters.. The ones he got from you. They mentioned Kendo. I read he did a lot of good for the island, and I.. I was wondering if he could help me help Joey and my girls; if you'd help me ask for his help.
[Feeling her heart drop into her stomach, the Empress controlled her features so as not to add stress to poor Guernsey.
Letting him catch his breath so he could speak, she gently brushed away the tears streaming down Guernsey's face, but her mind was only half listening.
Her friend was in trouble, and it wasn't safe for her to go to him. Indeed, Guernsey had no idea how much danger he'd just put himself in by coming here, what with the "Visitor" watching her.
The Guard's medic, Caspian, was just passing through with some supplies, and the Empress caught his arm.]
Fetch me our young prince, Caspian, and return with him when you do. I have need of you.
[As Caspian vanished in search of Kendo, the Empress rested a hand on Guernsey's shoulder.]
Breathe, dear one. Kendo is on his way. Whatever can be done, I know he will do to the utmost.
I believe you.. its just been- really, really hard.
*Guernsey tried to take deep breathes, but sobs exploded from his throat. He'd had quiet moments of tears frequently, forcing himself to stay busy to look for help.. look for anything that might help his brother and cows, but-*
*He was falling apart and terrified. He has his cows to worry about, his brother to worry about.. and even knowing Joey was sick, he's.. he's still afraid of his brother. He hates to admit that to himself, but he is scared of his brother; scared he will be yelled at or hurt again, even if Joey wouldn't even dream of hurting him in his right mind.*
I'm sorry, your majesty.. I- I'm trying to breathe, I promise.
*His apology came out shaky as he tried to dry his tears with his sleeve, trying to compose himself. He didn't cry very often, but times like now, he cries as hard as his body can take.*
[The Empress guided Guernsey to a seat, gently helping him down and letting him lean on her to cry. It took a good bit for him to get back to breathing normally, but eventually the sobbing slowed.
Caspian would be back soon with Kendo, so the window she had was short, but for his safety she had to take it. As soon as he was stable enough to listen, the Empress set a chair across from Guernsey, taking his hands in hers and making him look at her.]
You are very brave to have come here for help, and I will give it. But I need you to give me a promise in return, dear one.
This Island is extremely dangerous at the moment. You are far too precious to be risked. I need your promise that once you leave to return home, you will not set foot on this Island again until I or Commander Jones tells you that it is safe. You, Joey, and Syd must all remain in your reality until the danger is passed.
*Guernsey stared a moment, processing her words. Joey had been.. right? Even in his delusional state? He thought for another short moment, but nodded.*
I promise.. I'll stay back home after this. And I'll make sure Syd and Joey do too.
*He wondered what was so dangerous on the island.. What he was supposed to be hiding from. He hoped everyone would be okay, if it was something so dangerous he was being made promise to stay away. He couldn't worry about that on top of everything else right now, however.. Or, he shouldn't; he might anyway.*
Are.. You, going to be okay, your majesty? You still have that champion guy to protect you, right? To protect you from.. whatever is so dangerous here?
[A sigh of relief was cut short at Guernsey's question concerning her Champion.
Truthfully, even Eugene couldn't know at this point if he could keep her safe. Not from Geno. But Guernsey could never be told that.
Sometimes the responsibility of the crown - and of a friend - required good acting. The Empress smiled gently, not a trace of the apprehension she felt visible even in her eyes.]
Of course, dear one. My Champion will defend me. But we cannot defend you here, so you must return home.
[This lie made her sick to her stomach, but it was necessary. He had to believe she would be safe, or he would fret himself to death over what he could not affect.
Ah, but here came two sets of footsteps, the stride and fall matching Caspian and Kendo. The Empress stood, setting the chair aside once more, but not releasing Guernsey's hand. He might fly apart without a sense of connection.]
[The Empress smiled fondly. Her son was forgetting again that he should only bow to her now. Years of habit and lesser status were difficult to break.]
It seems your name is spreading among those who require aid, my son. Guernsey is here to seek a warrior's blade to protect his family, and came to search for you specifically.
*Guernsey stood and bowed back to Kendo, before sitting back down; he isn't terribly knowledgeable about imperial royalty, or, royalty in general despite his "prince of the underworld" status he gained when adopted; a status he never truly saw himself at. He wasn't sure why Kendo had bowed to him or The Empress.. He's just a guy in his mind still! And The Empress is his mom!!*
*Either way, he took a small breathe and began to explain.*
My brother, Joey, and the cows on my farm are getting sick; storm sickness. Mrs. Sunflower says she thinks its because of the Storm King, and.. I need someone to talk to him, and ask him to stop making my brother and animals sick.
Mrs. Sunflower said someone should "defeat" him, but I think that means kill him, and.. If that has to happen, I need it to, but I don't-
*He began to trail off, his lip quivering a little. His heart is a gentle one; violence never seems like a good solution, and he hates that he has to consider it this time. He wants his brother, niece and animals to be safe.. He wants Sunflower and Hayseed safe, he just- Hates knowing someone may die for it, even if that someone is evil.*
*Kendo had had several encounters recently that had made him aware of this entity, and what he knew of the Storm King, it wasn't good. Beyond the praises Haylee gave about him being a good dad, one only needed to look at Corascana to see the true horror beyond the name.*
*He would not let Guernsey's brother suffer the same fate as Corascana had, not if he could help it. Besides, he was always up for a quest!*
Mother, with your permission, I would like to leave immediately. I know of several friends who have knowledge of the Storm King, and would be able to greatly aid me in this.
*He thought for another moment.*
In regards to your brother, Guernsey, please pick up a good supply of various chocolate products before you return. The darker the better, though you may use your discretion in that regard. Consuming chocolate helps mitigate the effects of possession, and can help buy him some time while we undertake this quest.

[The stars were visible through the skylight in Charlotte's new room, but no matter how long she watched them, they only seemed to grow dimmer.

* @ronin-kendo had completely forgotten the day. He couldn't be blamed, as he had been helping so many people with their problems that the arrival of a holiday he didn't typically observe had rather passed him by. After a gentle reminder from Mizuki, however, it had rushed into his mind all at once:*
*Father's Day. A day he hadn't thought about all last year. But now it was different. Kendo was the adopted son of Mizuki, and she was married to Eugene, thus making the Champion his... adopted father? Stepfather?*
*Either way, good manners dictated that he had to do something for Eugene... even if he wasn't quite certain what. His own father had died when he was a boy, after all. While his Grandfather made sure it was tradition for the Spirit Siblings to pay respect to their departed father on this day, he sadly had nothing of his father with him now.*
*Even that, however, was a far cry from actually saying respects to a father figure and meaning it. And so, Kendo found himself at a loss.*
*He knew of some traditions, of course, such as preparing your father's favorite meal, or giving handmade "coupons" for things like shoulder massages, or even traditionally "father-ly" gifts like beer or neckties. But he had no time to find out, learn, and cook whatever Eugene's favorite dish was, he highly doubted that the man had any kind of muscle tension whatsoever, and he didn't seem the type to need ties.*
*See? At a loss.*
*The only thing Kendo could possibly do is go talk to Eugene himself. So, gathering up courage for a task that, somehow, felt impossibly difficult, he up and went to find Eugene to at least wish him well on the day.*
*Eugene, for his part, was taking a moment to relax and eat something after a few hours of training. Despite the fact that, technically, he didn't need to eat, Mizuki had been quite insistent that he keep regular mealtimes.*
*When he saw Kendo approaching him, he gave a polite nod and a smile to the young man.*
Well met, young Kendo.
*Kendo's face looked... conflicted, so Eugene gazed at him intently and softened his voice.*
Is... something the matter? You appear troubled...
*Kendo now encountered another problem. Was there... protocol for interacting with his mother's champion, as a prince, despite him also being his father? What bow height was correct? And what did he call Eugene? He... realized he had never actually asked. Normally, Eugene said hello to him, and he responded. Without calling him by any name. He referred to him as the Empress' Champion to others, but this was hardly the right environment here...*
*After several uncomfortable moments of silence as his brain spun in circles for several moments, he finally bowed at the height traditional for parents and elders.*
I wish you a happy Father's Day as your adopted son! I... apologize greatly for my lack of any gift.
*Had he always been this awkward around Eugene? It had never come up while training...*
*Ah, but there they were fellow warriors. Here, he was a young man speaking to his father. They had... never actually interacted like this, and the breaking of new social ground absolutely terrified him.*
[The stars were visible through the skylight in Charlotte's new room, but no matter how long she watched them, they only seemed to grow dimmer.
