This blog has so far focused on viewing Greek culture in the form of Romiosyni through old photography, paintings, and poetry. However, Romiosyni lives on even in the 21st century, and today there are still countless Romioi. They may not be in foustaneles anymore, but the spirit is as strong as ever; it lives on everyday through simply living as an unapologetic Greek, whether it is the rural shepherd, the kafeneio-dwelling papou, or the underground youth. For the next few days, this blog will be focusing on modern photography that I believe embodies 21st-century Romiosyni.

After the Service, painted by Theodoros Rallis c. 1873-1895, oil on canvas.
Refectory in a Greek Monastery (Mount Athos), painted by Theodoros Rallis c. 1885, oil on canvas. The most authentic and striking detail of this beautiful painting depicting mealtime in an Orthodox monastery is the sight of a monk standing before a lectern and reading aloud. This is a real and essential practice in Orthodox monasteries to this day, where most of the monks will eat in silence and listen intently while one of their brothers reads scripture or hagiographies from a lectern. We can also see a solitary monk on the right, sitting at his own table and facing the others; he may be contemplating or he may be a respected Elder (Geronda/Γέροντας) ensuring the other monks do not forget their spiritual discipline and lapse into idle chatter.

Dance in Corfu, painted by Dionysios Vegias (1810-1884), oil on canvas.
Arsanas at Mount Athos, painted by Spyros Papaloukas c. 1924, oil on canvas.
