I donât think anything quite gets me like âgrieving character starts wearing something of their dead loved ones,â particularly if the clothing/jewelry/object/weapon was something that sorta trademarked that other character. Itâs like the character is gone but you can still visually see their memory living on through those that loved them. It just hits so hard.
doubly so when the item ends up symbolically letting the dead character finish there business, there armor is shown deflecting an otherwise fatal blow from someone they protected , there sword is used to slay there arch nemesis and avenge there death, a wizards apprentices continues to learn from them by studying the notes left in there spellbook ect
I am sick of fantasy worldbuilding tips making writing inaccessible
Your story is valid if you donât know about the classic literature of the eastern city folk.
Your story is valid despite you not knowing how the garbage disposal of medieval cities works.
Stop.
Telling.
Writers.
They canât/shouldnât write until they have everything figured out. Figuring out the world, and knowing what you need, partially comes from writing the story. Not everyone is Tolkien.
Not everyone can or NEEDS to know every single detail about the world.
JUST WRITE YOUR WORLD.
Whoever said that you shouldnât write until youâve got everything figured out has clearly never written a world. In my opinion itâs a long process that begins with scribbling ideas and facts and then mixing it all together to form a world or a place in your world. For me, it starts from an idea which I fill in with other ideas Iâve had in the past and then sketch out a rough draft which I later develop into a fully fledged place. Itâs not something you do in a day and if you donât write anything because you think that you need to know every single detail youâre just slowing the process even more. Let your imagination run wild, who cares about aquaducts and what kind of stone the castles were made of, nobody walks into a city and demands to know what everything is made out of.
Worldbuilding absolutely is a process that more often than not coincides with writing the story. A huge percentage of what I create beyond the very basics (example: desert, cattle herders etc.) manifests because the characters, plot and scenes demand that it exists. And the layers are built over time, over working with the story Iâm trying to tell.
There are a lot of writers today that misunderstand how it works, and think historical accuracy is the be-all-and-end-all to fantasy/scifi worldbuilding, and while I do think itâs important to research and learn about the cultures, countries or eras that inspire you/your work, itâs less about making sure it is historically accurate or can pass as âa realityâ, but moreso understanding that particular knowledge, relevant to character, plot and setting (especially on subjects you are personally passionate about) can really enrich your creative writing.
PSA: Just a friendly reminder that whenever you start a creative project, you will invariably hit a phase where the Thingâ˘ď¸ appears horrendous and you start asking existential questions. But if you keep working, it invariably passes and starts to resemble something less like the devilâs vomit. Doesnât matter if itâs art, writing, or whatâthis happens repeatedly. Carry on.

plot feeling a little empty in the middle? hereâs some food for thought.
actions have consequences. things that your characters do inevitably can affect other people around them. what might they have done in the past that could come back and serve as an obstacle? or, maybe, what could they do now that could possibly raise the stakes just a little bit more?
subplots! be mindful of the subplots youâre adding - but sometimes it might be a good idea to include one if your plot is feeling a little bit empty. not only can it tie back into the overarching struggle, but it could also serve as a way to explore one of your characters or points further.
character exploration. get to know your characters a little bit better! let your readers find out something new. connecting and understanding the people within your story is important if you want your readers to grow attached to them.
world exploration. similar to the previous point, with the addition of creating a greater sense of familiarity of the circumstances that your story is taking place in. remember that nobody else knows the world of your wip as well as you do - illustrate it even further so everyone else can grasp it even better.
let your characters bond! maybe thereâs a lull in the plot. if your characters have the chance to take a breather and get to know the people around them, let them! it might help flesh out or even realistically advance their relationships with each other.
Deco-Punk Mechanical Arm by Nicholas HunterÂ
Inspired by the Dishonored series.
writing tip #3279:
if you're worried about your dialogue sounding unrealistic, say it aloud. then, the dialogue will have been said in real life, and is therefore realistic
10 More Generic Writer Affirmations
1. I only need to make changes I want to make with my writing.
2. My writing doesn't have to please anyone but me.
3. I am a valid writer, no matter what topics I write about or what kind of characters I create.
4. I am generous for even sharing my writing, and I need to start giving myself the same respect and appreciation that I give my writer friends when they share their writing.
5. I will not let anon hate bring me down. It is a callout to THEIR issues, not mine.
6. I will love my works with a fiery zest and if I am unable to love what I am currently working on, I will change it until I can or take a break until I am in a mindset that is able to.
7. I am able. I am capable. I am valid. I am respectable. I am amazing.
8. (For people writing in their second language) I am a badass linguist that can write in a language I didn't start speaking as a baby. I am incredible. Even if my grammar or spelling aren't perfect, I am still incredible because I can even write anything in a second language. I will not let the haters tell me otherwise.
9. I am a TRUE writer. I write, therefore I am a writer.
10. I will not let the "silly" self-deprecating humor on writeblr seep into my brain and start being how I really think. If this starts to happen, I will focus on building myself up rather than trying to be funny or relatable through self-deprecating humor. My mental health comes first; humor is not a necessity to be beloved.
In case you missed it, here was the last generic writer affirmations list I created
đđđđđ you just perfectly summarized my hopes for this blog. What I hope to do when I make my posts - remind people over and over and over that their deprecating jokes/posts aren't really true. They are NOT terrible. They are NOT invalid. They are NOT bad writers. They are NOT this or that.
And repeat it until they actually believe it. Yes! That's what I want. I am so, so happy to hear that it worked for at least one person. Thank you for posting this. I almost cried reading it, I'm so happy for you and that my goal worked for you. đđđđđ
There is one particular ship dynamic that never fails to wreck me, and Iâll call it Soulmates, But Not Like That. Not in a âsome higher power has decided that we are destined to be togetherâ way, but something that is almost the opposite of that. Itâs that character who has been alone for a long time, and has maybe convinced themselves that they will be alone forever, and who has a lot of barriers to intimacy with most of the people around them, for whatever the relevant narrative reasons are. And then they just happen to cross paths with this ONE FUCKING PERSON who works for them, through some very specific combination of personality and circumstance and life experience and mutually compatible damage. And there is always the shock of what are the fucking odds, and underneath everything the terror of what if this doesnât last. what if thereâs no one else. I would just go back to being alone. I donât know if I could do that after knowing this. Because when you finally let down that wall of emotional self-sufficiency the thought of having to put it back up again is painful. And in real life I donât at all believe that there is only One Designated Person for anyone, but in fiction I do tend to gravitate toward characters who believe themselves to be The Only One in some way, and I will always be emotionally compromised by that dawning sense of oh. You are like me.
