Because of all the filming and flying I’ve been doing recently, I bought the audio version of this book I’ve been wanting to read for a while, and I was pleasantly surprised at how much it totally enhanced my experience of it. Written by Alex Gino, ‘George’ is the story of Melissa, a girl who was born in the wrong body whom the world currently knows as George. You don’t have to understand the challenges of, or be into / part of the #LGBTQ community in order to appreciate this book. On some level, everyone can relate to searching for and negotiating their place in the world - though I think it must be very scary for a child that doesn’t have the vernacular to express themselves and ask for help in a way that the given world will understand, especially when biology can appear to be absolute. Actors, you’ll also appreciate the scenario in which Melissa tries out for the one part she absolutely wants in Charlotte’s Web and the teacher #casting it doesn’t think she’s right for it 😝 As for the audio recording, it’s so beautifully and charmingly read by @msjamieclayton; you're totally transported back to grade school / primary school when she reads the #Salutations scene. And her reading of the Kelly’s salon scene towards the end had all the simplicity of childish pleasure running through such a transformative scene that I was literally bawling on the plane back from Berlin.
