FIRST WORKSHOP,
Understanding of how does inflatable structure works. First three examples.
Kyrylo Tsuman 4053702
The first mock-up.
From first workshop we were focused on moving inflatable structures that is acts and move driven by pneumatic muscles to enrich the possibilities of functions of these type of constructions. And final structure was build bigger structure following the principles which was discovered earlier.

'Words On The Wind’ DIA Robotics Final Assignment
‘Words on the Wind’ is deformable tent structure containing an integrated floor lighting system. The tents deformations is produced by 4 Servo’s rotating simultaneously to alter the length of 4 wires that criss-cross over the surface of the tent by given amounts depending on angle between servo placement and wind direction angle data retrieved via Panchube. This wind direction angle data is also used by the floor lighting system to denote which sets of lights are blinking at any one time. This is a revised version of the original speaker system idea that was edited due to cost and knowledge to now run using LED’s around the tent.
These LED’s Blink "Thinking" in Morse Code at various speeds depending on the amount of people any where in the world are Tweeting thinking at set intervals though out the day. As finding Tweeters within a given radius of a set location failed to return enough results. This twitter data is collected Using processing then sent via UDP using Ghowl to Grasshopper. All Output data required to move the servo’s and change the lights is sent to the Arduino’s from Grasshopper via Firefly.
The Code Explained
1. Real-time local wind data is streamed into Grasshopper via a Panchube reader component, as this data may include many different weather variables such as temperature and Humidity. The Item components extract the required data from the incoming list. 2. The angle between the in coming wind direction and of the placement of the cable servos is then calculated. This number is then used to define how much all servos should adjust to deform the shape of the tent structure. 3. Here the Ardunio’s port is opened and the angles the servos are required to move are streamed to the Ardunio though the Uno Write Firefly component. 4. These gHowl component listen for input data from an external processing script that is counting the number of people writing thinking in there tweets in real-time. 5. This components use the number from the tweets to define the blink rate that the word ‘Thinking’ in Morse Code is flashed on the LED’s. As well as using the wind direction data to denote which LED’s are lit. 6 Here the second Ardunio’s port is opened and the blink rate is sent to the pre-chosen LED’s that is streamed to the Ardunio though the Uno Write Firefly component.

This is the final video for the 'Interactive Job Search Map' which shows how our process and the map is working. We are searching on twitter for "Architecture,Jobs" and after getting the number of tweets with their geo-location there are spots coming up where the tweets are coming from and the servo is moving.
In the first part of the video by detecting a movement by the motion sensor the light is switched on. Then the search on twitter starts and shows one tweet coming from our query and draws a spot where the tweet is coming from and the servo is moving.
In the middle part no tweets are found, so no movement of the servo and no spot is showing up.
The last part of the video shows two tweets and their location and the movement of the servo.

'Interactive Job Search Map'
Twitter and Servo:
Processing + twitter4j+search for query
1. Number of tweets, query: “Architecture, Jobs”
Processing + twitter4j+search for query + GET Geo/Search
2. Location of tweets, containing query: “Architecture, Jobs”
Processing + twitter4j+search for query + GET Geo/Search +number of tweets at certain location will blink on the map + Servo
3. Number of tweets in each location based on given coordinates are controlling rotation number of servo.
Eg. London (longitude, Latitude), located on the map if tweets using query is found.
Number of tweets containing query: ”Architecture, Jobs” will activate rotation of servo. One-tweet=180 degrees position with sign showing “New Job”, No- tweets=0 degrees position with sign showing “No Job”.
LED lights are covering the ocean surface on the map:

1. LED lights are controlled by motion sensor and activated/Turn ON upon detection of movement.

The 'interactive surface 1.0' is able to connect twitter data to a wall of balloons. The blowing up and down of the balloons represents the number of tweets, the situation of them represents the location the tweets are coming from. The wall is covered by canvas to hide the balloons and make it look like somebody is pushing against from behind.

This was our inspiration for the 'interactive surface 1.0'. It is a video by Nils Voelker who created a wall of plastic bags which are filled with air and emptied again by a self written process.

After realizing that the balloon idea of our interactive surface 1.0 is very difficult to built, we wanted to stay with our idea, but decided to change the appearance and the incoming information. That's why we created the 'interactive surface 2.0'. It is a frame-box which is including 6 movable boxes with translucent main citiy pictures on them. The incoming information, the weather conditions from one of those cities generates through a servo the movement of the box. The more tweets the more the box is pushed out. On the outside there is a motion sensor, so when somebody comes closer lights, who represent the weather by colors, are switched on.

The idea behind the concept of 'dia and the world' is to produce a interactive map which is able to move countries in connection to the number of students working in our school. The map is connected to the dia webpage and can refresh the data directly. As long as no-one is coming closer to the map it will look like a normal picture, but coming closer means a motion sensor is recognizing that movement and will start the moving of the countries and switching on the lights in connection to the number of students.

The first concept for connecting a social with an environmental media is the 'urban playground'. The social media is to create an event on facebook and to invite people. Then the data of the confirmed guests will be transferred to an urban area which can change its appearance in connection to the number of people.
For an event like an open-air theater with 45 confirmed guests the area will move out 45 seats and a stage or if it is not used for an event the city can just make an urban sculpture out of it.
That 'urban playground' can improve every place or courtyard in cities.
