The leaves sway in the gentle spring breeze, and bird calls fill the air. Train horns in the distance add a hint of history. This woodland scene captures the region's beauty, where nature and civilization peacefully coexist. Trains have been important in British Columbia since the mid-1800s, shaping the province's economy and society. The railway era started in the 1880s with the completion of the Canadian Pacific Railway, connecting the east and west coasts of Canada. Nasturtiums are an annual plant with bright, yellow-orange edible flowers and round green leaves that have a peppery taste. They grow very well in Coquitlam and the surrounding Vancouver area and Fraser Valley suburbs. They were very popular with local gardeners from the 1950s through to the 1990s. They are not as common today (2023) but people still grow them in their flower beds and in community gardens. They like to grow in full sun (3-6 hours of sunlight) ideally during March through May, but they can stay around through the summer till October if conditions are warm, but not too hot or too cold.
