I fully agree with the Ember Island Players kiss being wrong but I'm not taking folks seriously if they include the Day Of The Black Sun kiss.
Katara allowed it and leaned into it.
It was confirmed they did actually kiss in the Cave Of Two Lovers all the way back in the beginning of Book 2, so this isn't out of nowhere.
They could quite possibly die, get captured or be otherwise seperated. Especially after Aang was basically dead then half dead for weeks, maybe even months. This is a "now or never" kiss rather than a straight up violation.
Seems more like a worried expression than anything else.
Katara: "We've been through so many things together, and I've seen you grow up so much. You're not that little goofy kid I found in the iceberg anymore. I guess what I'm trying to say is, I'm really proud of you."
Aang: "Everything's gonna be different after today, isn't it?"
Aang: "What if ... what if I don't come back?"
Katara: "Aang, don't say that, of course you'll- "
First off, he's letting her speak first. It's such a minor detail but I like that he wasn't trying to dominate the conversation.
Secondly, reminder, this kid died and came back half dead, and is still panicked, pained and guilt ridden about it. Again, it's "now or never."
I feel like the biggest reason people include this in anti Kataang posts is because Aang initiated it.
Nevermind the context. Nevermind the fact Katara leaned into it when she could've easily told him off. (we all know how passionate she can be especially to protect herself and her dignity, even agaisnt her own brother or Aang. Their bond doesn't prevent her anger or lessen it.)
And nevermind the fact the music, unlike in the Ember Island Players where it came to a sudden halt to communicate the awkwardness, here is swelling. It's supposed to tell you it's more positive leaning than negative. A sort of "emotional release" type of sound.
