“I wish I could take you dancing,” he said, words stirring the hair near her ear, tickling against her neck. His hand moved up her back, dragging her shirt up with it, his palm warm through the soft cotton.

The half-moon was bright against the tops of the trees through the windows behind him, the leaves flashing silver like fish in shadowy water as they swayed in the warm kitchen lights. She could track her life by that moon. It had watched over all the nights she’d spent with him, a front row seat to all her increasingly poor decisions. A silent witness to the loss of her heart, one soft, surreal moment at a time.

An alternate universe where Aang never ran away and the war never happened. He became the Avatar at the proper time and set out on a years-long journey across the world to master all the elements. Katara lives during the same era as him in the Southern Water Tribe. Just like in the Northern Water Tribe, women are forbidden from learning waterbending as a form of combat and may only study it for healing. Nevertheless, Katara secretly watches the training sessions of the local master's students despite the Southern Tribe chief's ban. She considers Aang arrogant and an attention-seeker.
