Authors Convinced Fanfic is Illegal/Requires Permission
Terry Goodkind: “Copyright law dictates that in order for me to protect my copyright, when I find such things, I must go out and hire lawyers to threaten these people to make them stop, and to sue them if they don’t.”
John Scalzi: “Let's remember one fundamental thing about fanfic: Almost all of it is entirely illegal to begin with. It's the wild and wanton misappropriation of copyrighted material”
Diana Gabaldon: “OK, my position on fan-fic is pretty clear: I think it’s immoral, I know it’s illegal, and it makes me want to barf whenever I’ve inadvertently encountered some of it involving my characters.”
Robin Hobb: “Fan fiction is like any other form of identity theft. It injures the name of the party whose identity is stolen.”
Anne Rice: “I do not allow fan fiction. The characters are copyrighted. It upsets me terribly to even think about fan fiction with my characters. I advise my readers to write your own original stories with your own characters. It is absolutely essential that you respect my wishes.”
Anne McCaffrey: “there can be no adventure/stories set on Pern at all!!!!! That's infringing on my copyright and can bear heavy penalties…indiscriminate usage of our characters, worlds, and concepts on a 'public' media like electronic mail constitute copyright infringement AND, which many fans disregard, is ACTIONABLE!”
Chelsea Quinn Yarbro: “No. Absolutely not. It is also against federal law.”
Lynn Flewelling: “Whether you are writing about Seregil or Fox Mulder or Sherlock Holmes, if you do not have legal permission from the author, their estate, or publisher, then you are violating US copyright law. It is creative piracy. Doesn't matter how many disclaimers you put on, or if you're being paid. It. Is. Illegal.”
Someone Else, elaborated in the notes
Which one is the Funniest/Worst case?
1. Terry Goodkind
2. John Scalzi
3. Diana Gabaldon
4. Robin Hobb
5. Anne Rice
6. Anne McCaffrey
7. Chelsea Quinn Yarbro
8. Lynn Flewelling
9. Someone Else
Dishonorable mention to:
Lee Goldberg, who enjoys organizing harassment campaigns against individual fic authors, is shocked and bewildered by the OTW, and who once tried to convince people that Naomi Novik had changed her mind about fanfic,
Jo Walton, who compared fanfic to rape and said that “(her) urge isn’t to sue people who do it, it's to rend them limb from limb”
Archie Comics, which sent cease and desist letters to individual fan creators for years because they were afraid fanworks might taint their wholesome, family friendly image before coming out with Riverdale. (No word on a fanwork policy change)
And anyone who cites Marion Zimmer Bradley as an example of poor, innocent authors being hurt by fanfic.
something i don't see talked about enough is the fact that parents having constant surveillance over "their" children is normalized by our society
like seriously, parents will go install the Super Panopticon Kid Safe Parental Controls 2000 that sends their kid's internet history, recordings of their calls and texts, every file on their phone, and exact geolocation to the parents.
and if you ever point out that this is more likely to endanger kids than protect them, people suddenly bombard you with a thousand comments about how children are too stupid or immature to have the most basic privacy in their life.
If some of you don’t understand why I’m so passionate about helping people understand the DIY and anti-consumerist themes of alternative fashion it’s because I just read an article about punk fashion that had a section dedicated to “shopping some of our punk favorites” that included a $53 pair of fishnet tights
I get my fishnets from the dollar store, I make jewelry out of safety pins and soda tablets cans, I buy “normal” looking clothing at thrift stores and cut it and sew it and wear it so it fits with my style. That’s what it’s about. When punks, goths, emos, scene kids, etc tell you that dressing this way should be cheap it’s because it IS. Don’t let big corporations tell you otherwise
being nonbinary can be frustrating because people will either force you into the binary (insisting on called trans fems girls and trans mascs boys, for example. kings. queens. etc), OR they will force you out of it (not allow you to call yourself a boy, girl, etc). god forbid you identify as something like a nonbinary lesbian ("how can you be a lesbian if you aren't a girl then??" well because it's my gender and sexuality and i get to choose how i feel about it and how they interact with each other :3). god forbid you use traditionally binary pronouns like he or she instead of they or xe, or keep your gendered birth name.
they want to render down the infinite experiences of nonbinary people into a single identifiable third gender and it just doesn't work that way.

it's fucking me up how tv shows, movies, and even video games can't be "niche" content anymore
like nothing can be underrated anymore. it HAS to be a success. cartoons have to either be spongebob level successes with immediate marketing or they're shelved a season or two in.
Movies have such inflated budgets that they NEED to break a billion in the box office just to make back what they cost. Anything less than a blockbuster smash is turned into a tax write-off.
a single triple A video game can destroy an entire studio if it doesn't meet expectations, which are already lofty enough as it is.
and everything has to appeal to the widest demographic possible, which can mean sterilizing anything creative about the work so it becomes as palatable as possible.
idk im just sad about this
idk dude it kinda just came out of me
The creator-spirit
Don’t try to bend it to your will. Don’t force it. Don’t strain, struggle, frustrate. Energy passes freely when you relax; muscles become soft, supple, and spring into action at exactly the time they need to, with exactly the amount of force needed, and return to their softness after. If you flex, strain, always have them engaged, you'll do nothing but waste energy. You’ll have less for next time. Let the creator-spirit flow through you, use you as its avatar; let go of your desire to control it.
i think some of you guys are insane 👍 it's actually possible for a 16 year old to be online friends with someone in their 20s. source: teenagers are actually people who can talk to other people about shared interests.
21 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 that 18 year old is literally your college classmate. you are the same age. You Are The Same Age
like, the moral panic about age gaps in dating is one thing but this reddit thread was literally about Being Online Friends. you can be online friends with a teenager. they are actually people you can talk to. i promise.
it's very easy to not be a creepy adult when talking to a minor. step one: don't act creepy. that's it. that's all you need to do.
I would say there’s a little more to it than “don’t act creepy” (If you’re an older friend to a young person [and I do mean young, not just younger.], you should be attentive to and cautious about the influence you hold, since a lot of young people do look up to older people.) but I do firmly believe that making friends outside your decade is not just normal but also good for everyone involved
THAT WAS THE BEST SONG CHOICE FOR THIS VID
I thought I dreamt this video

this is like lingerie to me
Type of shit a cat walking on two legs would wear

Meditation used to be a practice that always confounded me, if I'm being honest. I would set a timer, close my eyes, focus on breathing fully & naturally through my nose, and it would feel like I'm attempting to stop a speeding train. My body would *fight* me, going "you can't stop, you have shit to do, you have things to worry about, how long as it been, surely the timer is getting close to being done, maybe you should check." Practically vibrating in my seat. My eyes would twitch. My body would itch. I'd literally be able to feel my heart squirming uncomfortably in my chest on every inhale. Every cell in my body would want me to stop, and prior to the last few months, I absolutely would have stopped!
Instead, I pushed through it. Insisted on holding the brakes down until I fully stopped, no matter how much the train wanted to keep going. I'd ask myself "why am I so uncomfortable" and start "scanning" my body, going through each part and intentionally relaxing it.
As this process goes on, eventually the breathing pattern stops feeling forced. The air begins to feel much like a drink of water when I'm thirsty, nourishing me, and it feels *good.* My thoughts happen, but I'm only observing them. I watch the lights & patterns on the back of my eyelids, no longer feeling my heart pounding against my chest, and I begin to feel an odd, almost... serene sensation above my eyes. As if a heavenly room opened up in my brain; where observations, ideas, and more come to me without much effort at all. It feels almost as if you're on the very edge of sleeping, without falling asleep. Before I knew it, the timer was going off. That's when it clicked. That's the meditative state I've been looking for.
Ever since I've been practicing it more and more. It's never anything long; I started with ten minutes, then fifteen, and I did twenty for awhile. It doesn't sound like a lot, but when you're sitting with your eyes closed, doing nothing, it can feel like forever (before you hit that meditative state, that is). Fifteen minutes is my sweet spot now, and by simply remembering the feeling of that meditative state, I'm able to reach it pretty quickly in those fifteen minutes. Before, i would spend most of the time trying to get there, but it's gotten much easier, and I almost always feel so much more clear and calm afterwards.
So yeah. If meditation has ever been a problem for you, just know that if you haven't practiced it, you're going to be stopping a moving train when you try. You need to keep holding down the brakes until it stops, or it will just keep accelerating. It'll be uncomfortable, and you'll need to learn to sit with the discomfort, feel it, and let it pass. What I found beyond that is 100% worth it
All for you
It grips me.
Fires on all cores.
Burrows deep, to the very bottom
for no reason, every reason at all.
Perhaps something was left unplugged,
the wires got crossed,
or the wrong drivers were installed
before shipping me out to hell.
The devil runs me and wonders why
I seize up during stress tests.
"couldn't they not do so many stress tests?"
Well, they do it for fun!
They like to see the smoke,
the colors running in jagged, rasterized hues.
Uniform, full utilization, indefinite.
And I can do the job.
Just tell me what to do!
I'll be the babe that works for you ;)
With a smile, with a laugh,
with a brain full of ᖴㄩᙅҜ
It's all for you.
Just tell me what to do.
