“[In 1989], I was eating out with friends, and I turned around and saw, in the booth behind us, Keanu Reeves and River Phoenix. Both were huge sex symbols at the time, River had just been nominated for an Oscar, and they’d been inches away from me all meal. But I didn’t care about Keanu Reeves and River Phoenix, because the third person at that table was… Martha Plimpton!

She & River were dating, and while she’d been in the Goonies, etc, she wasn’t a huge star. But I’d always loved her. So, spontaneously, I said, ‘Martha Plimpton! I loved you in Running on Empty!’ I don’t think Martha was used to be singled out while in the company of River and Keanu.

We chatted, and they all couldn’t have been nicer. Then, because the tables were all so close, we kept chatting, off and on. Maybe I’m misreading the situation, but I think they were all amused that, for a change, Martha had a gushing fan. They couldn’t have been more approachable and/or humble. A lovely night!”
