Any tips for futuristic stories?

hmm... not the genre i usually write, but i can definitely try to help you out!

world building:

1. setting: what year is the story set in? what countries still exist and which are new? are we still on earth or another planet/outer space? are we even in this universe to begin with?

2. history: what is remembered from before the story begins? how far back does the known history go?

3. technology: how much technology is there? does everyone have access to this technology?

4. politics: what is the political environment like? who makes the rules? who enforces these rules?

5. “magic”: is there magic in this setting? like telepathy or the force from star wars, for example?

tips in general:

1. don’t make it too much like this era. add new things! take things away! think of what got your world to this point and amplify it!

2. make sure everything included is relevant to the plot! yeah, being able to play your dreams back on your tv is cool, but if it doesn’t have to do with your plot, you don’t need it.

3. do your research! just do it broski.

4. along the same lines: know your history.

5. all that being said, the less you include about history in the actual story, the easier it’ll be for you to avoid inaccuracy pitfalls.

hey i'm writing a non-binary protagonist, Do you think using They/Them as pronouns would be comprehensible for people?

of course!

a lot of the time, writers will default to assuming their readers need everything spelled out for them, but more often than not, they underestimate their readers. a lot of people use they/them pronouns, and it can be easily slipped into dialogue if you’re worried about ppl not understanding.

i can’t offer too much advice on how to handle the subject as i’m not a non-binary person, so i urge you to reach out to an nb writer for how to go about it.

but yes. i absolutely believe you can write a non-binary protagonist with they/them pronouns. don’t believe anyone who tells you otherwise. good luck and happy writing!

Hello everyone! My name is Minka, and I’ve decided that I want to get serious about working on my WIPs. Hopefully posting about them and being involved with the writeblr community will help me with that! Willow Creek Witches - YA, contemporary fantasy. When Madison is sent to stay with an aunt she barely knows in Willow Creek, Maine, for the summer, she’s expecting nothing more than a few boring months in an isolated small town. But Willow Creek is full of secrets, some more dangerous than others, and when Madison inadvertently wakes an ancient evil, she’ll have to uncover them quickly in order to save the town from destruction. (Current status: first draft | tag: #willow creek witches)

The Mysterious Disappearance of Raine Kearney - NA, urban fantasy. Seven months ago, Lorraine Kearney walked out of house in Darson, Massachusetts, with nothing but the clothes on her back, hitchhiked out of town, and disappeared. Yesterday, she woke up in Los Angeles with no memory of anything that happened to her after that night. The explanation? Raine was possessed by a demon, and it seems like it’s not gone yet. If she wants to get rid of it and get back home, she’ll have to find a way to unlock her memories and figure out what actually happened while it was possessing her - and what it intends to do next.
