Also the treatment of Anna Diop from Titans (She plays Kory Anders aka Starfire). She also had to go through a lot of racial abuse and fandom tends to over worship side characters like; Dawn, Hank, Donna etc etc rather than give Anna her due propers. 

If we wanna take it back, we can also look at Teen Wolf. Fandom ignored Tyler Posey (who played Scott McCal) and seemed to really latch onto Dylan O’Brien (who played the best friend of Scott). 

I’m speaking from my own personal experience in the last two years.

Ellaria Sand’s character was changed from one who abhors vengeance to one who revels in it.

Talisa Maegyr-Stark was killed in an incredibly gruesome way all the while being pregnant.

The Dothraki are portrayed as wild ‘savages’ and the Unsullied as mindless drones.

Missandei’s only purpose was to hype up her queen and be her handmaiden, and was eventually killed off in chains. Her last words were her queen’s battle cry even though she never would’ve condoned the mass murder of hundreds of thousands of people.

Grey Worm was turned into a war criminal without feeling even though he never would’ve committed the actions he did in the Sack of King’s Landing.

Elia Martell is constantly pushed aside for Lyanna Statk and fandom loves to spout the excuse that she would’ve condoned her husband running away with (a fourteen year old girl) because she was Dornish.

And as to white fandom in the GoT community? God forbid you criticize Daenerys Targaryen. Her stans will come for you at the throat and they have the masterful way of turning the conversation around and when POC try to talk about the racism that they see in the show, especially in regards to Daenerys’ storyline, they derail the conversation or resort to the ever favourite argument of 'you’re applying modern lenses,’ or 'it’s a medieval fantasy’ and other such bullshit.

I could go on and on (and on and on and on... seriously, long post is long, sorry in advance) about narrative racism—and I see that many others already have done; all valid call outs too—but for the sake of clarity I’ll try to stick (mostly) to the OP’s specific request. Maybe I’ll post something more detailed surrounding narrative racism and how that ties into fandom racism as a whole later.

Game of Thrones. I don’t necessarily agree that there is a lot of the type of overt racism that the OP is asking about in this particular fandom. Make no mistake, as a collective, the GOT fandom ticks all the -ism boxes thoroughly and often; however, I’m not sure I would label fans stanning Daenerys Targaryen over Missandei or Grey Worm or any of the Dornish characters as overt racism simply because she was marketed as a main character while all of the others were not. That maybe says something about the narrative of the story (it absolutely does) but it’s not really an incriminating indictment of the fandom as a pack of overt racists.

Fans stanning Daenerys harder, and in larger numbers, over a black or brown character is not the same as John Boyega receiving death threats for acting in a Star Wars franchise while black. Boyega was marketed as a main character. He was marketed as central to the story. If Nathalie Emmanuel (Missandei) had been marketed as a main character on GOT in the same vein as Boyega was for Star Wars then this would be a different conversation. The fact that the character she played was relegated to a supporting role in her own death scene—a move used exclusively as a means for one white woman to attack another white woman—is absolutely an example of racism. It’s racism in the narrative though and that’s just not the same thing as what OP appears to be asking about. If I’m wrong then I apologize for making that assumption.

Now with GOT out of the way, a few other examples that I do think warrant a mention...

Doctor Who. Specifically, Martha Jones. Both the actress (Freema Agyeman) and the character were pilloried far and wide in the fandom. Agyeman was negatively compared to her predessor Billie Piper on everything from looks to talent to chemistry with David Tennant (The Doctor). Piper, who was white and blond and a fan favorite, chose to leave the show of her own volition but fandom still made it out to be Agyeman’s fault. None of this was helped by Martha Jones’ actual storyline on the show either—where Piper’s Rose was shown all the wonders of the universe by a cheery and fun Doctor, Martha instead got a grouchy asshole and the universe’s dirty underbelly.

For example, Martha’s first jaunt off planet with the Doctor was to the exact same planet he’d taken Rose to in the previous season. His trip with Rose involved a picnic surrounded by idyllic nature, a saucy fan favorite villain, a funny body swapping scene, loads of flirty banter and LOL-Nuncats! Yes, literal nuns who were literal bipedal cats. But with Martha? It had turned into a dirty, smog filled planet reduced to—and I kid you not—a decades long traffic jam. It had a plot that revolved around drug dealing. The flirty banter of the previous season had been replaced by a moody and angry Doctor who didn’t seem to like the pathetically smitten (why?!) Martha all that much. It featured the death of an often speculated about fan favorite friend of the Doctor’s.

As for the rest of Martha’s season? The Doctor did warm up to her as a friend...I guess, although I personally believe that he treated her like garbage. And she continued to pine away. Only God himself (and Russell T Davies) knows why. The sauce holding this shit burger together though came in the form of two ridiculously racist episodes where this 1000+ year old space and time traveler thought it was a good idea to wipe his own memories and strand both himself and his black companion in pre-WWI England and then get all angsty when she did what he’d told her to do and restore his memories once it was safe to do so. The angsty bit comes in because God forbid his highly educated (she was a medical doctor—something else she was attacked for, I guess because it made her an “uppity black” in comparison to white, working class shop girl Rose) black female friend not want to spend the rest of her life scrubbing the floors of early 20th century racist white folks all so he could indulge in being human and getting it on with some lily white woman he’d met five minutes before.

I go into so much detail about Martha’s storyline because it ties directly into the fandom racism surrounding her. All of the above? All her fault according to fandom. In fact, I distinctly remember a fanfiction written around the premise of the two parter I described above that shoehorned Rose into the white woman love interest role (by bringing her back from the parallel world she’d been lost to at the end of her season) that was so anti-Martha and overwhelmingly racist...it had thousands of comments. Positive comments. I can’t wait for more! Love, love, love! You’re the best writer EVER! You get the picture...

Someone in the notes also mentioned Mickey, who was Rose’s boyfriend in the first and second seasons. I don’t know that I would equate the hate that he got to racism as much as Martha—it’s pretty standard for DW fandom to hate the companion’s boyfriend. Rory and Danny received the same treatment to a degree, OTOH the Rory hate was mild compared to Mickey and Danny...and what do you think those two have in common? Also, it’s of note that Martha and Mickey’s last scene on DW was of them together and suddenly married?! Never mind that in Martha’s previous “last appearance” she was engaged to someone else (he was white) and she and Mickey had never shared a single scene or line of dialogue between them before. I guess they had to pair the two black characters off so why not to each other?

Star Trek. All of them but specifically Discovery. Someone in the notes mentioned how fandom treats leading character Michael Burnham who is played by Sonequa Martin-Green. I’d agree with them that this is true but with a caveat—in the case of Lorca (Jason Isaacs) absolutely but with Pike (Anson Mount) and Spock (Ethan Peck) I’m a little more cautious to automatically scream racism if only because they are two well established and beloved Star Trek characters that have existed since the very beginning. Both Pike and Spock have built in fanbases that go back decades. But I absolutely agree that fandom’s obsession with Lorca at the expense to Michael is dubious. And probably racist. Although I do think a lot of it ties into certain corners of a fandoms’ obsession with the “misunderstood” villain. As long as he’s male and white at least. Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) is one of the most well rounded and utterly bad ass villains I’ve ever seen and she gets a lot of racially charged fandom hate as well.

Harry Potter. Specifically The Cursed Child and the fandom meltdown that ensued when Hermione was played by a black actress. JK Rowling may be canceled (for other reasons) but she did accurately point out that she never describes what race Hermione (or Harry for that matter) is or isn’t in the books. HP fans lost their goddamn minds over black Hermione. Unfortunately, this instance of fandom racism often gets twisted up in the rest of fandom’s criticism of The Cursed Child and the rest of the criticism was pretty valid.

HP fandom similarly loses their shit, vocally and often, at the notion of a POC Harry. And the overwhelming obsession with Draco Malfoy—and the Malfoy-Black family in general—is also concerning. These are openly racist (blood purity) supporting characters. The second most written about character for the HP fandom on ao3 (second only to Harry himself) is Draco Malfoy. I think that speaks for itself...

The MCU. Someone in the notes already detailed this pretty accurately but the Anthony Mackie (Sam Wilson/Falcon) situation really encapsulates the fandom as a whole. He was maybe mean to a reporter once and he’s suddenly canceled but RDJ can bounce back from black face and literal prison and we’re not going to call that overtly racist? Don’t even get me started on Benedict Cumberbatch... we’d be here for the next six weeks and I could write enough vitriol to satisfy a three-book deal.

The Hunger Games. I didn’t see anyone else mention this but Katniss Everdeen is brown. I’m not sure Jennifer Lawrence could get a tan even if someone sprayed it on her. Another example of a white actress being offered roles meant for black and brown actresses. This is where I’d wedge in the obligatory Scarlett Johansson reference but fandom seems to, for once, have its collective shit together about her.

There are so many more I could mention but I’m just going to address two more. The first is Grace Park and Daniel Dae Kim. Full disclosure but I’ve never seen a single episode of whatever generic, buddy cop, Friday night granny show CBS shit out for them to star in (Wikipedia tells me it was a reboot of Hawaii Five-0) but I do know that they are Asian actors who got screwed over because they are Asian actors. They were marketed as the leads but somehow made significantly less than their white male co-stars. In 2017, CBS offered them what the network called “extensive” raises that both Park and Kim declined. Why? Because they would have still made roughly 15% less than their white male co-stars. So they quit. Good for them. They’re better than CBS and idk in what world Grace Park makes less $$ than Scott Cahn but I don’t want to live there.

The final example is Star Wars itself. I know OP is already familiar with John Boyega’s experiences and likely Kelly Marie Tran’s as well. Billy Dee Williams (Lando) also deserves a mention. And this is where I out myself as a fandom old crone—I remember the backlash and racism that Williams experienced back in Ye Olden Times. I was there as a wee fandom baby. When Lando betrayed Han he was vilified. Never mind that it only lasted all of 5 seconds, Lando was canceled and so was the black actor who played him. Williams has talked about this before but I think it bears repeating.
