So here is an idea and something I really want to be explore is Lin being see more valuable by upper class than Tenzin.
Because if air nomads didn't get wiped out, the only thing special about Tenzin is sadly being the Avatar's son. Lin in the other hand has last name and is great part of founder in the earth Kingdom that it clear enough in ATLA both show and comics that their last name even before creation of Republic City is heavy one.
I just want like young Tenzin for time in his life be labeled in someway lowering Lin's importance. "it's a pity, Lady Beifong would been much better off than being with that air nomad boy, aside from being Airbender what else is so special about him?"
I'm sorry for camping in your inbox
(i'm so sorry I didn't respond earlier 🥺 i love this ask so much!)
"I don't understand why she's marrying him."
Tenzin froze and remained in the shadows. Just around the corner a group of other party guests were huddled, far away from the center of the celebration.
"Not from what I heard. Lady Beifong chose to marry him."
"What will the Air Nation do for the Beifongs? They're all monks and don't have any resources. Or a military. Maybe she's doing it to give them economic and political leverage."
"If it was for leverage, then she should have married the other son. This one is just an airbender monk."
"Avatar Aang has another son?"
"Yes. A military officer in the United Forces."
"Oh, my! And they didn't set her up with him?!"
Tenzin felt his chest closing in on him. His vision began to spiral around him and it was not from the few sips of alcohol he was forced to endure.
"Tsk, tsk, tsk. I know she's marrying the Avatar's son, but you know what they will do to her."
"Oh, yes. I do hope she knows this."
Heat pulsed and throbbed in his ears. What would he do to Lin?! She grew up with his family her entire life and never have they hurt her. At this rate, she was already part of their family.
"They will force her to breed airbenders."
"Considering how strong the Beifong bloodlline is, I cannot see her failing."
"It's just another situation of the Beifong family solving other people's problems, yet again."
Tenzin walked in the opposite direction with a blurry vision. He wiped at his eyes and swallowed the hiccup that almost gave away his presence. Thankfully, his twinkletoes ability made him undetectable to the other partygoers.
He stayed in the shadows to avoid causing a scene. Announcing his engagement to Lin was supposed to be the best thing in his life. He waited until Lin was ready to make the announcement and he imagined there would be more resistance in Republic City.
The city was more supportive than Gaoling.
From his position, he saw Lin bowing and smiling politely. Some remarked on her betrothal necklace and he could see her explaining the significance of it from the SWT. Pride swelled in his heart, but he couldn't stop the tears from coming out.
How much he wanted to stand by her side proudly, but after hearing the gossip from others, he wondered if doing so would only bring down her prestige.
Eventually, Tenzin comes out of hiding. Lin can sense that something's off with him, but doesn't bring it out in public. They smile and thank everyone for the support and well-wishes and gifts.
Lao and Poppy wanted Lin and Tenzin to have separate bedrooms. But Lin insisted that they room together under the promise that she doesn't get pregnant before the wedding.
After Lin is done showering, Tenzin is sitting on the bed with a distant look in his eyes.
"Hey." Settling on the bed and sitting across from him, Lin tenderly touched his leg. "Are you alright?"
"You've been off since the party. You not feeling good?"
Lin scooted closer to him. "Tenz, tell me what's wrong," she implored gently, covering his hand with hers.
Peering down at their hands, Tenzin sighed. His thumb caressed her knuckles. "Are you sure you want to marry me?" he asked quietly.
"Do you know what I would have said if I didn't?"
He did not look up her. Nor did he react to her teasing.
"I heard some people saying that I wasn't worthy of marrying you."
"They said you should be married to Bumi because he's a military officer and I'm just...an airbender. And a monk. You're doing my family a favor. "
For the first time, Lin hears sadness in Tenzin's voice over his own bending. He's always been proud of his heritage and bending (perhaps a little too proud, in Lin's opinion). But not once, has he faced regret or sadness or shame in a quality that was a part of him.
Lin cupped Tenzin's face, forcing him to meet her eyes.
"I said yes because I love you, and I decided I want to be stuck with you for the rest of my life."
"They say we're going to force you to have airbenders."
"Well," Lin made a face, "everyone's hoping we have airbenders. So they're not wrong. But we both know that no one's forcing me into anything."
"No one knows us, but us. They don't know how much I love when you welcome me home after a long day at work. They don't know how you listen to every single thing I say and still have the audacity to tell me that Anil and Aputi are a terrible couple--"
"Because they are," Tenzin insisted. "The show should have kept Anil and Aisha together, instead of breaking them up."
Lin smiled. "I love the way you get riled up so easily and I have to calm you down." She held his hand and placed their hands in her lap. "I love how you protect me when I don't do it for myself."
"People can say what they want about you or me. But no one's opinions about our relationship matter except our own. I'm in love with a feather foot airbender and no one can do anythign about it."
Tenzin pulled Lin into his lap and Lin leaned into him, staring into his eyes.
"The question is, young master Tenzin..." Lin traced his jawline, "is if you're sure you want to marry me?"
Holding her properly, Tenzin leaned closer and kissed her.
"Forever, always," he answered with several more kisses.
"Now you have an idea how I feel back at home," Lin brought up.
"They shouldn't be talking about you like that."
Lin sighed. "Well, they do."
Tenzin gently dried her hair. "I'm sorry...I didn't realize it was like this..."
Lin shrugged. "What are we supposed to do? Everyone always has an opinion about us."
"I suppose..." They met in another kiss. "I love you, Lin. So, so much."
