I think about how full of life Olruggio was as a kid, even after going through so much, he's still so energetic.
I think about Olly now with dozens of health problems, a lot of them from how much he overworks himself. And how he's always exhausted.
I think about Olly at his core, still a person as bright and as full of hope as ever but he's constantly passing out or stressed out or drunk.
I think about Qifrey most definitely noticing how much Olly is pushing himself when he really needs a break. Watching his best friend who has saved his life so many times work to a painful degree.
I think about Qifrey trying to firmly confront Olly one time, trying to get him to slow down.
And then I think about Olly also using his work as a distraction so being asked to leave his desk means he'll connect the dots easier.
I think about Olly retorting, saying that Qifrey can't be one to talk because when he confronts him, even subtly, about his own exhaustion with his strange little quest for the Brims, he gets absolutely nothing.
Then I think that Qifrey would have to erase his memories that night.
And that's why he doesn't stop Olly as much as he should when he overworks himself/mostly uses other excuses to get him away from his desk (ex. using the smell of food to get Olly to eat something)

Just thought about how because apparently people can still cry out of an eye socket without an eye in it, that means that hypothetically, when Qifrey's silverwood is growing out of his missing eye, and he's crying about it, those tears are lowkey watering the silverwood T-T
This scene had me bawling my eyes out, and even now, I still can't look at it without being hit by this agonising wave of misery.
Panel 1, we have Qifrey on the ground with Coco sitting in front of him. Usually, when he kneels down to talk to children, he's slightly above them due to the massive height difference. Here, Coco is visibly bigger. There are so many ways to interpret this, and every single one is too sad for its own good.
Panel 2, his clothes are messy. A branch is coming out of his eye. His smile isn't like his usual awkward one. It's barely there. That guy is slowly falling apart and has fully accepted it. Also, this might just be me, but he looks very young here. Perhaps a reference to the fact that he never got to grow up like the other kids because of the tree. This is a DISGUSTING contrast to his usual self.
Panel 3 might be the worst. Coco's reaction is pure terror. Have we ever seen her look so horrified? I don't think so. And, unless I misunderstood it, she's flinching. I don't think that she's doing it because she's disgusted or anything like that. It's likely because this is too much for her. I mean, hey, first Custas, then Tartah, and now this? Shirahama, give my baby a break :(
This panel makes me so sick. And to think that this is only the beginning...

One of the reasons I really love witch hat atelier is that all the characters are nuanced and complex. No one is just black and white or evil vs good. It’s makes everyone just seem so real and interesting
THIS but when it comes to people doing straight up evil things there is absolutely ZERO understanding when it.
Yes, Easthies attacked half of the Healing Spire but there was a level of understanding because he was so terrified.
Yes, Custas put Coco and Tartah through so much emotional pain. But all he wanted was for him and Dagda to live peacefully and get justice for a lifetime of horrible treatment.
NO, Rili and Richeh's former master has no excuse for treating his students like that. NO, that lowly criminal witch with his gross x-ray glasses contraption has no right for treating people that way.
And we aren't shown any understanding for their point of view. Which is exactly how it should be!
Complex and nuanced character make witch hat great but I also love that there is zero tolerance for these topics.
K originally this was supposed to be a character study fic I was gonna post on AO3. But I have written two fics this week and if I write another I genuinely will burn out.

A break down of why Chapter 88 is my favorite out of all of the chapters.
Because oh my days is it so fragile. (Spoilers obvi btw)
First off, the very first panel hits so bad.
At first glance, you think it's just Coco being her smiley self. We've seen this so many times, you would look it over.
But her eyes are completely empty of any joy. Her smile is barely a smile, it's more of a straight line than anything. She's masking so hard, my baby ):
It’s also so terribly simple. She’s just standing there. There’s no fancy embellishments around, a nice background or a pretty outfit to open this chapter. It’s empty. It’s the calm before a storm.
Then she's staring down Qifrey with a pout on her lips. Let me say that again, she's staring down at him. She's the wiser of the two at this moment. I would even say she's the more mature one. And Qifrey is against a wall which is casting a shadow on him. It's a physical representation that there is no way for him to lie himself out of this. And Coco doesn't even see hope when she looks at him (represented by the shadow bc remember, the mangas are mainly set in her POV).
And then we see Qifrey with blank eyes and a weak smile. Something something, Mr. "you smile like I do". OOO ITS SO GOOD
We don't even see Coco's eyes in the next few panels because she can't look that man in the eyes for the life of her.
Blah blah blah custas dies or whatever ANYWAYS.
We watch Coco grow more and more distressed. She's doing everything to stop herself from crying. Her perspective of the world is falling around her but she needs to ask the question.
Because you can't forget the chapter before this, we see this:
Coco is so angry at the world and, even worse, at herself from this moment on.
This twelve year old. Is mad at the world and herself. This is a child mad that she couldn't stop people from dying.
She just lost Custas and Tartah. She’s so afraid of losing anyone else.
AND AGAIN QIFREY SMILES LIKE COCO UGHHH. He's still physically removing his lies, his boundaries (ie. hat, glasses, and hair) but he's smiling. He's still masking. He’s not going to let himself truly be vulnerable.
I'd also like to point out that Qifrey looks so tense here. because LIKE COCO he is holding back tears.
HERES WHERE IT GETS FUN
Now they're opposites of each other but yet not at the same time! Hip hip hooray for confusion!1!!1 Coco is frightened and still fighting to hold it together. Qifrey is frightened and still fighting to hold it together.
The difference is Coco isn't smiling while Qifrey is. And then Qifrey falters. A PHYSICAL REPRESENTATION THAT THE LIE IS FALLING AND THAT HE CAN'T DO THIS ALONE.
HE EVEN SAYS IT TIME FOR THE LIE TO FALL IN THE NEXT FEW PANELS AHHHH.
Also ain't it funny that his hands are reaching for the ground like roots? :)
The next panel is so compelling too. Qifrey doesn't want to look Coco in the eyes. He and his lies are falling. Coco and her mask are falling.
AND. HE. IS. STILL. SMILING. EVEN WIDER NOW IF I MIGHT ADD.
And then Coco's eyes go wide BECAUSE SHE JUST WATCHED THIS HAPPEN LIKE FIVE MINUTES AGO. AND NOW QIFREY IS TELLING HER SHE'S GONNA HAVE TO WATCH IT AGAIN.
REMINDER. A TWELVE YEAR OLD BTW.
And then Coco does the most childish thing.
She runs to her parent most trusted adult and begs for it to stop. It's the most foolish, illogical thing she could do, because she's a child. She’s brave, she’s smart, but that means nothing if she loses the people she loves.
"That's not fair" when has saying that fixed anything? What will crying do to stop a tree from killing Qifrey?
BUT IT WORKS. IT ACTUALLY WORKS.
Because now Qifrey doesn't feel comforted anymore. SOMETHING SOMETHING MR. "IM THE GIVER".
And then he dawns on his mask of smiling and his glasses. He has to for the sake of Coco. "I know, I'm sorry, Coco" because what else is he supposed to do in this moment but GIVE THE COMFORT TO HER.
AND THEN THE REST OF HIS MONOLOUGE OF WHO HE WANTS TO BE.
HE'S GIVING HER THE COMFORT OF HOPE. AHHHHJHFLIWRJLIFJL
And it's enough to dry her tears and face the hope of the future. Coco wants Qifrey's future as well. She wants him to be himself and to be her mentor.
blah blah blah evil scarecrow hobo and evil cat king who’s shirtless for some reason? WHO CARES. OK BACK TO QIFREY AND COCO YAY.
Yeah there not out of the woods yet lol you thought. Now Qifrey's back on his feet, hiding the truth once again with his cap and glasses. He's looking down at Coco and Coco's looking up at him. The balance of master and apprentice is restored. Everything should be fine again...right?
No. Coco is grasping at straws. She is still so ill with worry and fear. SHE'S CONFUSED WHY SHE ISN'T ENOUGH BECAUSE SHE THINKS SHE THE WORST WITCH EVER. SHE THINKS SHES NOTHING BUT SELFISH AND WEAK.
I'm gonna be honest, Qifrey on this page confuses me. He's hiding something once again. He's not turning to face Coco when he talks. We don't even see his eyes. In fact, he's smiling really wide at the end.
(IF ONLY HE FINISHED HIS DAMN SENTENCE UGHHH)
But here's the worst part:
When Qifrey tells her about the best, most hopeful future Coco could ever think of, we don't fully see his eyes or even his face anymore. He even turns away from her.
I think that man is lying through his teeth.
And yet Coco HOLDS THAT FALSE HOPE SO TIGHTLY.
She walks in front of Qifrey. She furrows her brow and locks her eyes ahead. She wipes her tears and nose like nothing happened. And she runs straight ahead.
Meanwhile, Qifrey looks almost surprised that his words were more than enough to help Coco move forward.
Yet he stands completely still in the archway. He sits in the shadows like he had at the start of the chapter. He's going to lie again and again. He's going to build his walls high again.
or so he thinks.
Qifrey lingers in the darkness. Watching a mirror of his childhood self represented like Coco. (In this top panel, the archway looks more like a mirror to me than an exit.) He even sits there reminiscing.
AND GUESS WHO PUSHES QIFREY INTO THE LIGHT?!
OLRUGGIO OF THE DAMN TORCH. THE SKY'S KINDEST, MOST RADIENT STAR.
The way Olly forges ahead to the future, shown by him walking first. (LIKE HOW A TORCH OR THE STARS LIGHTS THE PATH AHEAD)
And oh look we finally see Qifrey's face again! Yay— oh. Oh no, that boy is terrified. That boy sees all the light and hope in Olruggio's face and it comforts him. That boy hears the word home and gets comforted which scares him(LIKE COCO IN CHAPTER 94 WHEN SHE RUNS AWAY).
That boy is fighting the angry stick in his eye.
Because that's what the Silverwood will do. Whenever Qifrey steps into the light of hope for the future, it will stop it. It will always stop him.
But that doesn't mean he won't try to fight for the future.
And yknow what? Sure the next chapters are really groundbreaking and important to the story. And the point of chapter 94 is also to highlight the development of Coco and Qifrey’s dynamic. That’s basically what I just pointed out here.
But to me, this chapter shows me even better that Coco has really been through so much. Yes, she is brave, she is strong, she is determined.
But at the root of all that, she is human. She is a child that has just gone through the most violent of situations.
