Boohoohoo
Less than three weeks shy of my Fitbit's second birthday, during which time there was only ONE day that I forgot to wear it, I lost it. I always took it off when I got to yoga and clipped it to my purse, then put it back on after class. For some reason, on June 18, I didn't put it back on immediately after class. I realized this when I got in the house, went to grab it, and it was gone. I checked my house, my car, my garage, it wasn't there. Which meant I lost it between the yoga studio and my car.
Unfortunately, the yoga studio I go to recently moved, and instead of being in their own place, they now occupy one room in a giant building filled with all types of random businesses. Â There's no front desk, no central location or phone number to call. I emailed the owners of the studio about having lost it, with a picture of it, and never heard back. I posted on Craigslist and got nothing. I asked around at my next class and nobody knew anything. I gave up.
I told my ex-boyfriend, who gave it to me for my birthday two years ago, and told him to email Fitbit to see if they would send a replacement. I had gotten him one for his birthday last year, and it fell off after a few weeks. I emailed Fitbit on his behalf and they sent a free one right away. He said if Fitbit wouldn't replace it, he'd get me one for my birthday. Well, Fitbit said they'd sell me one for $50, since it would be an "upgrade" (I had an Ultra and now I'd have to get a One). I told him to buy me a Withings Pulse instead. Of course, faced with the option of a $100 Pulse and a $50 Fitbit, he wanted to go with Fitbit. So I got the Pulse and he gave me $50. It worked.
I'm not 100% thrilled with the Pulse...it doesn't seem to track steps quite as accurately as the Fitbit. My phone is consistently counting way more steps by the end of the day, and I don't always have my phone in my pocket like I do the Pulse. With the Fitbit, the phone was always very close to spot-on or a little under. There's also no way to change the step goal with the Pulse -- 10,000 is the goal for everyone. When I looked in to changing it, I found a Facebook post and a Tweet, both from over a year ago, asking if this feature would be implemented, and Withings responded that it would be "this summer," i.e. summer 2013. Â I posted on their Facebook and tweeted at them yesterday to point that out, and they said they are still working on it as other things came up that took priority. Ugh.
I don't come anywhere near 10,000 these days. I'm lucky to get 5,000. (Lots of reasons have contributed to this...I used to average between 7,500 and 10,000 daily). I'd like to have a goal closer to 5,000 so that when I get close, I can push myself to get there. With a goal of 10,000, it just seems unattainable and I feel like I shouldn't bother.
The heart rate feature is nice, and the blood oxygen measure is gimmicky but I liked that I could get it through a free firmware upgrade on the older device, which saved me almost $30 over buying the new one (it was $92 on Amazon vs. $119.99 for the Pulse O2), where the only difference would have been the addition of a wristband that I would never have used.
I'm also extremely bummed right now because my yoga studio cancelled the class I've been going to for 6 months. I was only able to go on Mondays at 4:30 due to my work schedule, but I loved that class and I love the instructor. I was able to change my schedule starting at the beginning of June so I could go to both days of the class, Mondays and Wednesdays, which I've been doing and have loved. I was just telling my boyfriend after last Monday's class how cool it was that I had finally found this little community of people, since there are 3 or 4 others who regularly go to that class and we've gotten comfortable with each other. So when I showed up on Wednesday and learned that the Monday class on June 30 would be the last one, I bawled. Â I cried through class, I sobbed when I got home. I felt like this thing I had finally settled into had just been ripped away from me. Â Unfortunately, this is a recurring theme in my life (though typically with people and relationships) that has caused a lot of trauma, so this was a really hard blow. And it keeps getting worse. The instructor didn't even know her class was being cancelled. She found out Tuesday night when she happened to look at the schedule online. To top it all off, there are now ZERO basic classes offered. Here's what shows up on the front page of their website:
This is now a lie. I sent an email last week to the owners, who I know personally (their kids used to go to the school where I teach, two of them were in my class) to express how sad and disappointed I am in this schedule change. I finally got a response yesterday that I felt was a total brush off. Â I'm angry and I'm sad. I have a membership through next February or March so I can't stop going. I'm going to try a class called "Evening Flow" tomorrow night, immediately followed by one called "Yin / Restorative." Â Even though I've been going regularly since the end of December, I'm still not very good and I think anything other than a basic class is going to be a huge challenge for me. Â The instructor I love is teaching a class on Monday nights now called "Asana and Meditation" and she said the difficulty level will depend on who shows up. Â I'm going to try it since I like her style so much, but I'm not hopeful that it will be easy. The basic class has still been hard for me.
So. This has been an update on sad things in my life, brought to you by my procrastination of getting all my work done for my Montessori certification, which I absolutely must finish this week while my school is closed as I have my exams in Chicago next weekend. So much to do. And I'm all out of Diet Coke. :(
Stretches that improve different aspects of your body.
ah yes, lower pain pain
yoga people?
Soooo sorry for posting 5000 times out of nowhere but work is canceled due to the extreme cold so I'm just sitting here.
I started going to yoga a few weeks ago because I get to go for free through work. The parents of 3 of our kids own this place and I think they get a discount on tuition or something for letting us all go for free. They don't have any "beginner" classes but I asked if I'm brand new if I should be going to "basic yoga" or "all-level yoga" because both say they welcome beginners, and they said basic. So based on their class schedule and my work schedule I can go to this basic yoga class on Monday and Friday afternoons. Well for the past 3 weeks, things have come up that have prevented me from going to the Monday class (I was out of town 2 Mondays, I had a doctor appointment the other). It's a different instructor on Mondays and Fridays so I've wanted to go to the Monday one because while the Friday instructor is okay, I don't love her. She wasn't very welcoming and pretty much ignored me when I tried to join in pre-class conversation two weeks in a row (I've been to it 3 times now).
So because the owners have 3 kids in school and all, their policy is that if the schools close for weather (i.e. snow day), the studio is closed as well. It was announced yesterday that schools would be closed today due to the extreme cold, so I bundled up and went to the basic class last night with yet another instructor. Now I'm looking at the class schedule and one of today's classes is canceled, but the basic class is not. I've really been wanting to go to this class to try out this instructor and I'm going to be on that side of town at the exact right time anyway.
So the question is, being a beginner (I've been to 4 classes in the last 3 weeks), and having gone last night despite still being sore from Friday's class, would it be smart or stupid to go again today? Are my muscles going to be worn out from all this new activity (3 classes in 4 days sounds rough to me after never having used most of them before) or will it just be beneficial to go again, less than 24 hours later? I am feeling a little sore but nothing overwhelming, and my lower back is killing me but it always is and I'll just take ibuprofen before I go. If I go. Should I go?

p.p.s.
It would never work with this guy anyway because he specifically mentions he doesn't like Ke$ha and he's looking for "A girl who has some self-respect and doesn't sleep around. I'm here looking for a relationship, not sex." as if the two things are mutually exclusive.
addendum
Oh and p.s. my profile has me listed as "full-figured" (from what I can tell, the "fattest" option they offer -- others include "curvy" and "a few extra pounds") and there are pictures of me from the waist up that show I am clearly not thin, but this guy "winked" at me anyway (the match.com equivalent of a Facebook poke, I guess).
oh god dating no no ugh
So I'm taking a Twitter break and Facebook is dumb and I don't really want to broadcast that I'm doing this anyway, but I signed up for match.com yesterday (oh hey, haven't been on Tumblr for awhile, the boyfriend I moved 500 miles to be with 2 1/2 years ago dumped me this summer over the phone during week 7 of an 8 week training I was away for so I bought a house and still live here with no friends) and I'm confused about something this guy posted.
I am genuinely confused about this, so I'd appreciate feedback from anyone who can relate. I was looking at one guy's profile and one of his pictures is a before and after, and he clearly lost a whooooole lot of weight. Like a couple hundred pounds I'd wager. Awesome! Good for him. This made me want to read more about him because I really respect someone who was able to do that. So I'm reading his bio, and he has a list of things he's looking for in a woman. And one of them says "I know this makes me sound like a jerk, but if you're over 200lbs I probably won't be interested. I used to be extremely overweight, but worked hard to get into shape. I'm not saying you have to be a skinny mini or anything like that, but...."
I'm just having a hard time wrapping my head around that. Like yes, I understand completely that people are and aren't attracted to different body types. I totally get that, and anybody has a right to say they aren't interested in overweight women (but boooooooo because I'm great). Â I just don't understand his reasoning for it. He won't be interested in someone over 200 lbs because he used to be overweight and worked hard to get in shape? I would think that would make someone a little more understanding of women who are overweight. Does he think dating an overweight woman will make him gain the weight back? Would he have been okay with dating a 200+ lb woman before he lost all that weight? Would it be terrible of me to just contact the guy and straight up ask him these things? Because I'm genuinely curious.
Have any of you who have successfully gotten in shape after being overweight felt this way? And if so, why?Â
how to accept a compliment and other things.
I guess I'm going to yoga for the first time tomorrow. Pretty freaked out.

So I think I posted about this but I hurt my knee two weeks ago from falling on some ice. It started to feel a lot better after two days, then I went to the chiropractor who did some shit to it and it hurt worse and hasn't really stopped hurting since.
Boyfriend and I went to Chicago for a long weekend and we did a lot of walking, and I had a lot of discomfort, but nothing unmanageable. We've been back since Wednesday and I've done nothing but sit since then, half hoping that would make my knee feel better and half just because I'm lazy and am totally using it as an excuse.
I'm going to treadmill for awhile today, low speed, just because I feel like I need to stop being so goddamn lazy. I'm up about 4 lbs from where I have been plateaued since November. At one point I was down to 216 but that was like one day and otherwise I've been hovering at 220-221 for the last 4 or 5 months. Weighed in a couple days ago and was at 224.something so yeah. Need to get back on track.
I haven't been tracking calories at all either, and I've been eating like shit, so trying to get back on the ball. We meal-planned yesterday before we went grocery shopping and a lot of the meals are pretty high calorie (mostly just dinners) but I should be able to balance out my days with my breakfast and lunch. I've just been SO HUNGRY lately. Like, nothing satisfies me. I'll eat 4 meals before I go to work in the afternoon and then eat a snack there (I'm only there for 3 hours most days) and eat dinner when I get home. It's ridiculous. And I feel like if I tell myself NOT to eat so much then I obsess over it and make it worse. That's part of why I stopped logging food, it consumed too much of my life. It didn't at first, and for months, but then somewhere over the last few months it just became too much, I think because I wasn't making great choices anymore and so it was making me constantly feel guilty.
I accidentally won a ton (like a year's supply) of chocolate and vanilla protein powder at this auction (don't ask) so I should really start using that as meal replacements. I just need to find something to put it in other than blending with milk and ice so that I find it tasty. I bought strawberries last night, maybe mixing that into a chocolate protein shake would be tasty. I don't know. Right now I'm just having a giant mug of coffee (like it holds 4 cups in one and I'm going to have at least 1.5 of them) to wake me up and make me feel somewhat motivated. Plus it should be an appetite suppressant so maybe I won't be STARVING. Guess I'll have a clif bar too before I get on the treadmill.
Blarrrrrrrrrrgh! Anybody read this far? I've still been reading all your posts, just not doing much of my own. Promise.
Everything Hurts
So two days ago I was killing time after coffee with a friend before I had to be at work. One of my tires was low so I decided to put some air in it. When I finished, I took a step back to look at the tire and see if it was okay. My right foot hit a patch of ice and slipped. And kept slipping. And kept slipping. Eventually, my legs were like this:
Only without the triumphant pose. I managed to pull myself over to my car but holy shit did it hurt. It doesn't help that my job involves me standing almost the entire time, with lots of sweeping and mopping thrown in.
I went to the doctor yesterday to get it checked out, and though it already felt a lot better than the day it happened, my knee was still bugging me. They did an x-ray and decided nothing was damaged.
But.
The x-ray showed that where I should have about 1 centimeter of cartilage between my femur and tibia, I have barely 1 millimeter. The nurse practitioner said I will "definitely have arthritis" in the next 20 years.
Great.
I'm supposed to only do low-impact motion like stationary bikes and swimming.
GOOD THING I JUST BOUGHT THAT TREADMILL A MONTH AGO.
They also gave me a tetanus shot because why not I guess? I figure I lose my insurance in 5 months, might as well let them throw whatever they want at me now. But so because of that my arm is sore as hell.
My right knee is still bugging me, and on top of that my left leg is now killing me because I've been putting all my weight on it. The hamstring is SUPER tight and painful no matter how much I stretch it.
Did I mention I'm going on vacation in two days to a city where all I'll be doing is walking?
Ugh, life.
Yeah this has nothing to do with fitblr or my weight loss or anything, I just really like it. Took it yesterday at work. It's really misleading.
