This is based on a message I received a few days ago that made me freak out and spiral completely out of control. I agree with those briefsÂ
It’s depressing how quick people are to scream “cringe” at anyone who talks about relating to Rick. Especially knowing how much of himself Dan Harmon puts into the character. I get it, there are some embarrassing people who wanna “be Rick” by acting like an asshole and claiming some sort of superior intelligence. But for a lot of people, it’s Rick’s flaws that they find themselves in. It’s not so much about acting like Rick as it is feeling like him. It’s about relating to those selfish urges, not acting on them. (And even then, who doesn’t slip up from time to time?) And yeah, you wouldn’t want to emulate most aspects of his personality, but it’s comforting to see them. To see your own flaws in an animated character.
Hell, a large part of the series has been about Rick facing the repercussions of his bad lifestyle. It’s not painted as glamorous. And there’s definitely something therapeutic about seeing him fail, give up, try, and fail again. It’s such a reflection of real life. And I’m so grateful for it. When I watch the show, I’m rooting to see him improve himself because I want to improve myself. And when he doesn’t, I’m comforted that I’m not the only one screwing up.
There’s nothing wrong with seeing yourself in a bad character.
He’s so cute :)
