Hi! What type of conversations do you think Rick and Michonne had about marriage before the bridge? My headcanon is that Michonne never put much stock in marriage and had no interest in it pre-ZA. Do you think she and Rick had conversations about their views on marriage? Do you think these conversations led Rick to ask Michonne to have a baby with him before he could formally propose (although I think part of this has to do with the season 9 show runner’s opinion that they didn’t need to get married at all)?
As a side note, I always thought it was not a good look from the show having the two white women main characters getting proposed to and married, but the Black woman main character very noticeably not. Like, we know Rick and Michonne were committed to each other and that they were as good as married, but the optics of not formally having them get married were not great. Even if they were going for Michonne is non-traditional/anti-patriarchy/feminist or something, the end result still looks like they only wanted to legitimize some of the show’s unions (obviously their relationship was legitimate either way, but them not getting married is sending some kind of message when marriage is still valued by many characters in the ZA). Thank goodness for TOWL giving us what the main show should have.
See this one is interesting because I would absolutely think Rick and Michonne talked about marriage and, considering they’d been in a relationship for over two years by season 9, I feel like they would’ve directly established their relationship as a marriage at some point before Rick was taken. It really feels like the only reason they didn’t is because of the writers.
In terms of how I envision them talking about it, I could see Rick having marriage with Michonne on his mind and asking her how she felt about marriage since he knows he feels it’s a meaningful way to acknowledge commitment.
And I could see Michonne telling Rick how ever since she was young she knew marriage was something she only would’ve been open to with the right person and then she looks at Rick, saying so it’s something she’s open to now. And Rick would’ve been shopping for rings on walkers’ fingers the very next day, if he hadn’t already found one before she even said that.
Your side note perfectly put into words what I’ve always felt. It never sat right with me that the writers didn’t outright classify Rick and Michonne’s relationship as a marriage in TWD when that’s so obviously what they were. And it did feel like a suspicious thing to have avoided when the writers took time to show other relationships with less build up as marriages.
Like I think nearly every white woman who was in a relationship in TWD was married, and none of the women of color were until much later in the series. Which definitely got a side eye from me. There are characters who I could see genuinely just not being into the concept of marriage. But I just do not think that applies to Rick and Michonne.
Like you said, it’s not like their relationship was any less valid without rings or labels, but part of why I for years would mention how I wanted Rick and Michonne to exchange rings is because it’s absolutely something I think those two characters would do.
I agree with you that pre-ZA Michonne likely didn’t put much stock in needing to be married and felt it was more important that the relationship was genuinely solid. But I also never got the sense that Michonne was ever against marriage as a whole. I always felt that with the right man Michonne would’ve welcomed marriage.
And since, especially in the ZA, marriage is more of a heart thing than a government approved union, the rings ultimately just serve as a symbol of the depth of their love and commitment. And considering Michonne always found sentimental value in items that remind her of loved ones, I think a ring that symbolized her love with Rick would’ve meant a lot to her.
And Rick for sure would not be one to drag his feet in marrying Michonne. Like that man wanted to wife her up in every way possible. To the point where I feel like he would’ve been down to go to the abandoned County Clerk’s office and find a marriage certificate for them to sign too lol.
I remember before season 9 aired I was hoping they’d at least show Rick and Michonne wearing rings in the premiere to even just imply they got married during the year and half time jump. I had to side-eye even more when they didn’t let Rick and Michonne have their own rings, but then had Michonne wear Rick’s previous wedding ring from his broken marriage once he was taken. Like on one hand I liked that her wearing the ring at least affirmed the way she viewed Rick as her husband but I so wished it could’ve been a ring from their own marriage.
But in the end, TOWL covers over a multitude of sins. 😌 And I’m so happy with how the proposal moment played out in TOWL. I wouldn’t trade that special ep 5 scene. And I’m really grateful to Danai for knowing that Rick and Michonne deserved to have that clearcut marriage proposal moment considering they’re the ultimate husband and wife.
Mr. Rick KING OF YEARNING Grimes
This being the episode that made me certain richonne was happening is kind of perfect given that the title is “Clear”
I'm new to the Walking Dead franchise and am sitting here balling my eyes out thinking about Michonne and Carl's beautiful relationship and i am so happy that Carl got to experience her love, care, and nurturing during his time- albeit short time, after the world fell (IMO, Carl wouldnt have lasted as long had Michonne not been a part of his life, actually ill stand on that and say Rick wouldnt have lasted long either without her). Many people werent able or willing to give as much to others as Michonne did, especially after losing so much. We see her demonstrate care throughout the series for many people, yet she never quite receives the same level of care in return (couldnt stand Andrea for this very reason). The way she loves selflessly and nurtures without any expectation of reciprocity makes me want to know more about her upbringing and what her parents instilled in her, if she had younger siblings she had to care for (she gives off older sister vibes), a close knit family, etc. She's an extraordinary example of the many facets of selfless love, very similar to Rick (so i was surprised to learn that some people felt they werent a good match, since they're pretty much the same person!). Do you have any headcanons or insight about her upbringing and early family life that may have contributed to how she demonstrates love? Thanks in advance!
I love the way you worded this.🥹 And I really agree! It makes me happy that you, too, were moved by the bond between Michonne and Carl. Their connection is one of the things that really endeared me to this show. And this is a great, thoughtful question about the way Michonne’s upbringing might’ve influenced how she loves. Being a big sister myself, I could totally see Michonne being one too. Especially because there’s often an expectation for the eldest daughter to be responsible and have their stuff together.
My instant thought is that Michonne came from a family with a lot of accomplished, well-rounded women who didn’t make themselves small. I could see it being that her mom was a powerhouse woman, and Michonne got to grow up seeing her father love and support her mom for all she is, rather than try to shrink her down. It would let her know you can be all of you and still find a love that encourages that, rather than minimizes or shrinks that. I feel like maybe she watched the selfless way her mom and dad supported each other and supported her, and that impacted the selfless way she loves others.
I also was thinking about it, and I could see Michonne maybe even having a little brother that was several years younger than her - like he was a tween while she was in college/young adult or something. Because right off the bat, she was so good with Carl, particularly navigating him at that tween age, and of course, being a mother to Andre contributed to that. But with Andre being a toddler and Michonne still knowing how to connect with Carl as an older kid, I could also see it being that she maybe had experience with a younger brother too, and remembers how he was when he was Carl’s age. I like to think Michonne came from a genuinely nurturing family that instilled values of loyalty, honest communication, and loving fiercely. And I completely agree that one of the many things Michonne and Rick have in common is being great examples of selfless love.

Happy richonniversary erveryone
10 years ... How time flies!
richonne friends…
imagine baby!michonne always checking the keychains in gas stations and gift shops to see if her name was on a keychain.
the disappointment of scrolling through the racks until she gets to "Michelle' and there's never a 'Michonne’ afterwards.
every single time.
in TOWL she walked past it without even trying to look because she spent her childhood always disappointed.
imagine how many years of childhood it took for her to give up and just stop looking for her name. instead buying herself an M necklace that she’s worn since the start of the turn.
she’s had this necklace since the beginning. she was wearing this when she met rick across the prison fence. rick’s seen this on her since their first meeting.
my baby even put rick's ring on that necklace so she can have a representation of herself and her man.
which i hate that the show-runners did his old wedding band but it's a rant for another day. also twd showrunners doing this is probably the reason she’s not wearing it in TOWL. why would she wear something that represents her husbands marital vows with his EX WIFE?
and that's why rick giving michonne the M necklace from the gift shop is so special. it's something he's seen her wear since the prison. hearing the disappointment in her voice when she said she's "never liked those" and she's never seen her name "not even once".
rick notices everything about michonne. he saw she wasn't wearing it during their reunion. he saw that flicker of adolescent sadness on her face remembering how she never was able to have one of those keychains because her name was never there.
rick working with what he’s got to make her happy shows what kind of husband he is. it’s always for her. he will always find a way to fix the hurt she’s gone through.
happy valentine's day to the baddest couple in the game

why do they look like a painting?
Here for Richonne.
If it ain’t a love like this this, I don’t want it ❣️
“you think i didn’t want to be with you? i tried everything!”
“do you still love me?” - “always. i’ve never stopped loving you.”
“THE ONLY TIME I FEEL SAFE IS WHEN I’M WITH YOU.”
“you gotta go.” - “that is NEVER happening.”
“thank you.” - “you never have to thank me ever.”
“after i left here, why did you come after me?” - “you know why.” - “say it. i need you to.” - “YOU’RE THE LOVE OF MY LIFE. I COULDN’T JUST LET YOU GO. IT FELT LIKE MY HEART RIPPED- RIPPED ITSELF OUT OF MY CHEST AND WALKED OUT THE DOOR.”
“they’ve taken so much from us. why give them any more? this hope that you have in the CRM, sacrificing yourself- it’s not real. we, your family, are real. i’m real. OUR LOVE? THIS? IT DOESN’T GET DENIED. no matter what you keep trying to tell me or yourself. and this-this back and forth…. it’s hurting me rick. it’s making me become someone i don’t recognize. you’re hurting me. and i know you. that is NOT how you love.”
“I CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT YOU, WITHOUT YOU I DIE.”
“…at least if i think you will live on longer than me without knowing if you do, i can just believe that it’s true. knowing. seeing that loss? i can’t. I WON’T SURVIVE THAT MICHONNE. I JUST WON’T.”
“WE CAN MAKE THIS WHOLE DAMN WORLD OURS IF WE WANT TO.”
Danai Gurira
Thank you Danai for this gift, and for putting your heart, soul, and brilliant mind into this episode. I still remember exactly how it felt to hear this dialogue and watch this scene for the first time.
Thank God I’m a Richonner!
