There is this wonderful Harry Potter fic called Ever Upward. It’s by Stranglerfig on Ao3. It’s a series that involves queer themes, found family, and non-human worldbuilding and does it so well; the merfolk winter festival, Iceglow, is great and I love it.

The gist of it is that pre-Hogwarts Harry runs away from home, finds himself under the care of the basilisk, and lives in the Chamber with the occupants of the castle proper completely unaware. While living there he spends a lot of time in and out of the forest just being a general good vibes dispenser and befriending everyone he can, it seems.

Freedom Force only made the mistake of calling her "girl Spyke" once.

Callisto sends her and Evan to Boston for better lives after Freedom Force finds a cure for Evan's condition.

This, plus learning she can hide her own protrusions, leaves her with conflicted feelings.

Natural skater, break-dancer, and beat-boxer.

Has a strong bond with Evan due to their similar powers leaving them with similar appearances for a bit.

Would kill for him, but luckily hasn't had to.

(He'd do the same for her, but he's less vocal about it.)

Picks up school subjects easily enough that Evan calls her "nerd". Affectionately, of course.

After the X-Men lose to Wanda at the mall, Xavier says he should've prepared them to fight someone like her.

Not that he should've treated her better so she wouldn't be so angry and vindictive.

That he should've prepared for an eventuality in which his team would have to fight her.

But Wanda's anger is at least partially Xavier's fault.

Any psychologist worth their degree could see she wasn't going to get better there.

(Who could blame her? Her room was a metal box and she was kept in a straight jacket 24/7. Animals are treated better.)

A good psychologist would've suggested a change of location and conditions.

Did Xavier ever do that?

No. Not even when Wanda begged to go to his school.

He said she was "too dangerous" for his school and sent her back to the metal box that they refer to as her bedroom.

He let the staff continue to treat Wanda in inhumane ways, and his only regret was that he didn't prepare people to fight her.

I said most of them wouldn't understand traumatic upbringings.

That is not to say none of them have had trauma. Scott's plane crash, Jean's best friend's death, Kurt getting burned at the stake, Kitty's bullies, and Amara's mom's death are all traumatic experiences that they all have to deal with and helped shape who they are.

But those were not the same thing as a repeated pattern of abusive and traumatic behavior caused by a parent. They all at least had loving parents and happy homes.

Tabitha, unfortunately, did not.

And this makes it hard for the X-Men to really understand her. They expect her to act like them, and are disappointed when she can't.

But The Brotherhood is a group of kids like her. They don't need to try to understand her, they just do. And they don't expect her to be something she's not.

They're also really forgiving, letting her stay after she shaved Fred, blew up the bathtub (with Todd in it), and stole Lance's Jeep.

In Tabitha's opinion, The Brotherhood are her people, and she'd have stayed with them if Mystique hadn't thrown her out.
