In 1970 at what we now recognize as the first gay pride parade in the USA, Marsha P Johnson was not welcomed. She was there, but she was not wanted. In 1970, the gay scene was very transphobic, as well as very racist. A black trans woman was not wanted or welcomed at pride.

Marsha marched anyway.

Because she knew that discrimination was wrong, and even if everyone around her hated her, they — and she — still deserved better. They deserved liberation. So she marched anyway.

Recently I had the misfortune of speaking with an aphobe who had no problem telling me "well X asexuals have been nothing but mean to me. Why would I support people who hate me?" That was one of their flimsy excuses for why sex favorable asexuals, demisexuals, and anyone who wasn't what I can only call a "radical gold star asexual" (ie sex repulsed, sex negative, and wants everyone else out of the community so that the asexual label can be returned to a "pure" definition of exclusively zero sexual attraction and 100% repulsion) should be excluded from the asexual community.

To that, I have only one thing to say: grow up.

Seriously, grow up. Because what you're saying is "well they were MEAN TO ME, so I don't care if they've been part of my community for over a decade, they deserve to be abandoned and kicked out and to hell with their liberation because they were MEAN to ME!!!!"

If your moral belief that people don't deserve bigotry ends when you personally don't like someone, you don't actually believe in ending bigotry, you just want to moral grandstand until you can wear the boot crushing others.

You can dislike someone. You can even hate them. And you can still fight for their rights and liberation.

I don't like transphobic gay people. In fact, I think they're disgusting traitors. I'm still going to fight for their rights, because that's what liberation means.
