brain is short circuiting because this episode frames rhaenyra as the first and last thing, the first and last PERSON that alicent desired for herself that wasn't a manipulation of her father or husband. Otto even called her on it, that her desire to save rhaenyra, even as she usurps her, was not motivated by her loyalty to viserys but by the love she's held for rhaenyra since they were children. she can't help but love rhyneara because her love for rhaenyra is the only part of her true self too strong to be kept at bay by the mask she's crafted. So of course she draws the strength to defy her father (see: abuser) with it and refuses to murder rhaenyra not just because she loves her but because her love for her is the strongest thread that ties her to her true self. even in her pursuit of what alicent thinks she wants (aegon on the throne), she protects what she truly wants (rhaenyra).
