âOur children, Ned, all our sweet babes. Rickon, Bran, Arya, Sansa, Robb...Robb..."
Catelyn Stark cmsn by Fiocca_art on twt <3
THE TIME OF WINDS IS NOW
What I do know is that you have no choice. If you go to Kingâs Landing and swear fealty, you will never be allowed to leave. If you turn your tail and retreat to Winterfell, your lords will lose all respect for you. Some may even go over to the Lannisters. Then the queen, with that much less to fear, can do as she likes with her prisoners. Our best hope, our only true hope, is that you can defeat the foe in the field. If you should chance to take Lord Tywin or the Kingslayer captive, why then a trade might very well be possible, but that is not the heart of it. So long as you have power enough that they must fear you, Ned and your sister should be safe.
I'm gonna talk about this little monologue from Catelyn. I see this criticism of her - dear god when aren't people bitching about Cat - that she's stupid for pushing to send terms to the Lannisters and that "you can't negotiate with your oppressor" sentiment I see just kind of bandied about a lot of the time. But here - Cat is not stupid. She knows when it's time to fight! She also knows when its time to talk. What she is trying to do from the jump is keep them from open war, and then keep the casualties of open war down. Sure, the Lannisters and especially Cersei & Joff & Tywin are all bad actors not coming to the table in good faith. Nevertheless! Catelyn feels they have an obligation to tamp down on the fighting - but that doesn't mean she isn't aware that they have to fight!
I want Rhaenyra.

EMMA D'ARCY as RHAENYRA TARGARYEN â 2.05 | "Regent"
the tragedy is that even if every single part of tywinâs legacy violently implodes on our page these ppl will still be like âwell thats only bc he diedâ or âwell he had one major blindspot which was abusing the shit out of his kids igâ and not confront that everything about tywinâs worldview and methods is anything but this necessary ruthlessly pragmatic utilitarian leader that westeros needs fantasy and he was actually an evil fragile moron who is the one who put his family on an unsalvageable path to doom
currently rereading agot and Iâm so sick at how often sansa begs for mercy by promising âIâll be good, Iâll be a good girl, Iâll behaveâ like it literally happens in every single chapter (and this is BEFORE she becomes a hostage). meanwhile she lives in constant terror of doing something wrong, sheâs repeatedly reprimanded by septa mordane for questioning ned because god forbid she turns out like her âbadâ sister arya. and then people turn around and mock/punish her for being naive about nedâs plan, even though she keeps ASKING why heâs doing what heâs doing and everyone just tells her to shut up instead of sitting her down and explaining to her why she needs to have her guard up. SHE is the one who was betrothed to joffrey, surely ned can take five minutes of his time to explain to her why he doesnât trust joffrey or the lannisters. but somehow sansa telling cersei about nedâs plan makes her stupid and naive and traitorousâŚlord please take sansaâs pain and give it to gregor clegane.

winds of winter this year btw I've always said that
are there any published essays on asoiaf you would recommend?
âBeyond the Pale? Craster and the Pathological Reproduction of Houses in Westerosâ by D. Marcel DeCoste, in Mastering the Game of Thrones: Essays on George R. R. Martinâs A Song of Ice and Fire (eds. Jes Bettis and Susan Johnston)
âHigh and Mighty Queens of Westerosâ by Kavita Mudan Finn, âSetting up Westeros: The Medievalesque World of Game of Thronesâ by Gillian Polack, âBarbarian Colonizers and Postcolonialism in Westeros and Britainâ by Shiloh Carroll in Game of Thrones versus History: Written in Blood (ed. Brian A. Pavlac)
âPower and Feminism in Westerosâ by Caroline Spector, âBack to the Egg: The Prequels to A Song of Ice and Fireâ by Gary Westfahl, âAn Unreliable World: History and Timekeeping in Westerosâ by Adam Whitehead in Beyond the Wall: Exploring George R. R. Martinâs A Song of Ice and Fire (ed. James Lowder)
âWesterosi Queens: Medievalist Portrayal of Female Power and Authority in A Song of Ice and Fireâ by Sylwia Borowska-Szerszun, in Queenship and the Women of Westeros: Female Agency and Advice in Game of Thrones and A Song of Ice and Fire (eds. Zita Eva Rohr and Lisa Benz)
Additionally, here are some essays and books that arenât about the series specifically but which Iâve found applicable to it:
âOlallaâs Legacy: Twentieth-Century Vampire Fiction and Genetic Previvorshipâ by Sara Wasson (on gothic horror deriving from oneâs own genetics)
Gothic Incest: Gender, Sexuality and Transgression by Jenny DiPlacidi
âDoubling and Incest in the Mabinogiâ by Andrew Welsh
The English Romance in Time: Transforming Motifs from Geoffrey of Monmouth to the Death of Shakespeare by Helen Cooper
âWhen a Knight meets a Dragon Maiden: Human Identity and the Monstrous Animal Otherâ by Lydia Zeldenrust, âAngela Carterâs âUnicornâ and the Illusion of Empowerment Through Objectificationâ by Janey Tracey, Dead Blondes and Bad Mothers: Monstrosity, Patriarchy, and the Fear of Female Power by Jude Ellison S. Doyle (Dany studies)
âThe Armour of an Alienating Identityâ by Jeffrey Jerome Cohen and the members of Interscripta, âBritomartâs Armor in Spenserâs âFaerie Queeneâ: Reopening Cultural Matters of Gender and Figurationâ by Judith H. Anderson, âMaiden Warriors and Other Sonsâ by Carol J. Clover, âMenaced Masculinity and Imperiled Virginity in the Morte Darthurâ and âMaloryâs Multiple Virginsâ by Kathleen Coyne Kelly, Studies in the Fairy Mythology of Arthurian Romance by Lucy Allen Paton (Jaime and Brienne studies)
âIsnât It Romantic? Angela Carterâs Bloody Revision of the Romantic Aesthetic in âThe Erl-Kingââ by Harriet Kramer Linkin (Sansa studies)
âRegardless of Sex: Men, Women, and Power in Early Northern Europeâ by Carol J. Clover (Ironborn studies)
The thing about published work on asoiaf is that most of it is badâŚvery often a piece will be rife with misspellings, factual inaccuracies, and jaw-dropping statements like the following: âit takes Daenerys Targaryen many chapters to mutate from a stereotypical dumb blonde sold into sex slavery to a leader of the Dothraki barbarians to a self-determined potential ruler who through fire magic manages to hatch three dragonsâ (âFantasy as Politics: George R.R. Martinâs A Song of Ice and Fireâ by Rainer Emig). The examples listed in my original answer arenât flawless either but I do think theyâre among the best Iâve encountered
